Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 12:14pm Carmichael:

I didn't know Henry Cow were from Canterbury. Must have been fooled by the obscure reference to Henry Cowell.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:15pm Shaun:

Kenty!
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:16pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: Henry Cow formed in Cambridge, but are very much entangled with the Canterbury scene

Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:18pm Shaun:

Cheers, Tony. Looking forward to the voyage.
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:19pm Dean:

The family tree aspect of the Canterbury scene is part of its charm. I recall hearing in a now defunct record store in Downey, CA, a pre-first LP National Health with Bruford drumming. Would love to verify.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:20pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: Verification ahead, later in the show!
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:21pm Dean:

Speaking of Bruford, this Ayers chord progression was aped on Absolute Elsewhere's album.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:21pm Flash Strap:

Lovin Ayers these days, excited about the show. Hi Tony!

"Joy of a Toy" was Ayer's first solo release AFTER leaving Soft Machine (think my mouth may have said "prior to leaving" without checking with my brain first).
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:37pm Flash Strap:

God damn I love Robert Wyatt's voice. That little voice turned me socialist

plus, ENORMOUS thanks to listener Joe of Brooklyn for his staggeringly generous pledge!!!! THANKS, JOE!!
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:43pm βrian:

So does the socialism cause the Brooklyn accent, or is it the reverse?
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:46pm Dean:

Good lord, this album includes a tune by Keith Jarrett!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 12:47pm Jeff Golick:

...that quote...Horace Silver...?
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:47pm Tony Coulter:

Canterbury stalwarts Phil Miller and Pip Pyle were both in Delivery ... along with Steve Miller and Lol Coxhill.

Yes on the Jarrett (not this tune, of course).
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:48pm Dean:

Roy Babbington, too. And Robert Stigwood was a co-producer.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:48pm Flash Strap:

are you saying I have a brooklyn accent, Brian? 'cause that would be a new one for me
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:48pm Dean:

[Oops. Getting into the genealogical weeds.]

  Tue. 10/6/15 12:52pm Dean:

Beyond Barbara Gaskin's cover of "It's My Party," I know very little about post-70s Dave Stewart.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:53pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G: Horace Silver, you mean? You would know better than me....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 12:53pm Jeff Golick:

Yeah. Gah. Gotta work on that.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:53pm βrian:

Oh, you know. All things socialist imply Bernie to folks in flyover land.

(I have a friend who works for him and so does a great Bernie impression.)
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:54pm Kay:

I like Barbara Gaskin's group Spyrogyra - that's not Canterbury, is it?
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:55pm Tony Coulter:

Hi Kay! I thought of playing Spyrogyra (who I like a lot too), but decided they just sound too unrelated, despite the links...
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:55pm Dean:

Spirogyra is new to me, but a little bird tells me yes, they're from Kent.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:56pm Kay:

Do Jethro Tull have any Canterbury ties? Because Passion Play has lots of soprano sax and kind of reminds me of the sound, plus two side-filling songs (Parts I and II, I believe).
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:56pm Tony Coulter:

I'd say no on that one -- but, of course, there could be some influence at work.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 12:57pm Flash Strap:

@Brian: Ah yes, I follow you!
Avatar    Tue. 10/6/15 12:58pm V Priceless:

love this Egg rekkid...I met Roy Babbington..swell guy..still doing Soft Machine Legacy with John Etheridge, Theo Travis, etc. - John Marshall, too, I think. Saw them play in 2014 with Mark Fletcher filling in on drums - whoa!
  Tue. 10/6/15 12:59pm Dean:

Would love to hear Holdsworth era Soft Machine, too.
  Tue. 10/6/15 1:00pm Dean:

I'm always humming "Hazard Profile" in the car when I'm driving around with the kids. They now know the riff if not the provenance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 1:02pm listener james from westwood:

Lovely stuff so far at the 1-hour mark!
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:02pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:02pm Tony Coulter:

Thanks, Listener J!
Avatar    Tue. 10/6/15 1:02pm Chris from DC:

One of the weirder things I've seen was Alan Holdsworth and the Ramones back to back at an outdoor show. The Ramones fans were...impatient.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:03pm Tony Coulter:

... and Flash Strap!!
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:04pm Tony Coulter:

A bunch of free jazzers appear on this first Gong album, including Burton Greene!
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:06pm Tony Coulter:

HEY, EVERYONE: Don't forget to pledge if you can -- the station need your help. The coffers are near empty at the moment -- it's Cap'n Crunch time fer sure....
Avatar    Tue. 10/6/15 1:07pm V Priceless:

'A Visit To Newport Hospital' is also a favorite of that old hippie, Captain Sensible - thus reinforcing the much-maligned 'punk / prog' connection (of course, I say 'old hippie' with much tongue-in-cheek admiration for the man)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 1:14pm Carmichael:

How did I know this was Gong before I even looked?!
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:14pm βrian:

C'est marrant, ça.

Hello Tony.
In the Land of Grey & Punk anyone.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:29pm Tony Coulter:

Dasheill Hedayat = Melmoth. He is backed by Gong on this album -- and even William Burroughs puts in an appearance! Burroughs and Daevid Allen were buddies in the early '60s.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:30pm Tony Coulter:

I destroyed my keyboard by pouring too much coffee into it. Finally able to type something again.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:35pm Tony Coulter:

Talking about quotes (like Jeff G was), was that Juliet of the Spirits at the end of the Dashiell Hedayat track? I know it was Nino Rota....
  Tue. 10/6/15 1:37pm Dean:

L-o-v-e Supersister. And yet I missed them when they played a prog fest not too long ago in, of all places, La Mirada, CA.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:37pm Tony Coulter:

@ Rich: Yikes! Your letters do look a little jittery and over-caffeinated....

  Tue. 10/6/15 1:50pm Dean:

Wasn't Sinclair on the live album w/ orchestra, post-WL?
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:51pm Tony Coulter:

@ Carmichael: No, Richard Sinclair was still in the band at that point. Dave Sinclair was gone, though ... to Matching Mole (on now)! In fact, he wrote "O Caroline"
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

@ Dean: You mean Dave Sinclair? Yes, he returned to the fold.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 1:52pm Jeff Golick:

@Flash Strap: me, too. (I actually played "O Caroline" yesterday!)
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:52pm Tony Coulter:

@ Jeff G: Now you know why they called the tune "Miserable Man."
  Tue. 10/6/15 1:53pm 836:

Ah, yes, David. Richard's cousin, no? Pleased to have seen Richard with Camel live, if never with National Health or Hatfield.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/6/15 1:54pm Stanley:

Hi Brian - that's great, I had a shuftie and it looks just up my street and also, should be of interest of my friend (aka e12 on these boards) who is stuying drawing in London. Thanks mate, I'll put it into the programme.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:54pm Tony Coulter:

Yep, the Sinclairs were cousins.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 1:56pm Tony Coulter:

HEY!! We need a few more pledges before the end of the show. Please help out station and stream if you can....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 10/6/15 1:58pm Carmichael:

I was talking about keyboard Sinclair, not to be confused with bassist Sinclair.

I also have a live DVD that must be mid 80s or so, with both Sinclairs, Pye & Jimmy Hastings, and the original drummer. They do a stellar Nine Feet Underground.
  Tue. 10/6/15 1:59pm Dean:

Back in the day a Long Beach FM station had a weekly progressive rock show for which various "Space Shanty" tracks served as intro- and outro- music.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 2:00pm Tony Coulter:

Steve Hillage and Dave Stewart were both in Khan. It was sort of a reformation of Arzachel/Uriel.
  Tue. 10/6/15 2:00pm Dean:

I remember buying the album at a Wherehouse for, what, $2.99?, out of the import section. Have it to this day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 10/6/15 2:11pm Brian in UK:

I had a pair of solar flares made of suede.
  Tue. 10/6/15 2:12pm Dean:

@Jeff G.: I hate to say this, but the Delivery tune to me echoes a much later recording. From about 3:05 for ten seconds or so I hear the cadence that pervades "Synchronicity II" by The Police, decidedly NOT a Canterbury band.
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 2:12pm Tony Coulter:

Here's another French Canterbury-influenced band for you....
  Tue. 10/6/15 2:12pm Dean:

So what's moving? The gelatin or the plates?
Avatar Tue. 10/6/15 2:13pm Tony Coulter:

Both!

A great show, really nice overview (with a few surprises).

If anyone's interested in exploring this "Canterbury" thing further, I put together a series of 28 three-hour podcasts which you can find here: canterburysoundwaves.blogspot.com

Deep show, thanks Tony. Would like to see FOLLIES Vol. 2, 3 and 4 since I bet you have lots of goodies we Canterbury-o-philes need to hear. Out here, Will J Pawtucket
