Good Morning Kurt, Doug, and etc.

good morning, Kurt! Welcome back! Looking forward to this! Hiya Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 9:03am Kurt Gottschalk:

i haven't messed up yet!
Avatar    Wed. 6/24/15 9:03am duke:

I admire Ornette's fashion sense almost as much as his music. I like that jacket in the photo.
Avatar    Wed. 6/24/15 9:03am listener james from westwood:

How do, Kurt, Doug, and all!
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 9:06am Dervish:

Duke, you are so right. The man was one hell of a style icon. No one could wear electric blue/purple pajamas for evening wear better than he.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 9:07am Doug Schulkind:

OK, this opening cut is making me cry.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 9:09am Mark Helsten:

Hallelujah!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/24/15 9:09am Jeff:

Good morning, Kurt! Glad to hear this is all starting off great; now I can nap some more and listen back later.
  Wed. 6/24/15 9:10am travis:

settling in for the long haul. bravo Kurt, looking forward to this set
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 9:26am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Commemorating Gunther Schuller here as well I see.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

And R.I.P. Gunther Schuller.

ack, him too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 9:48am Artie Haywire:

Lonely Woman is an amazing piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 9:55am Kurt Gottschalk:

there's more of it to come!
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:09am Doug Schulkind:

Ornette explains the inspiration for Lonely Woman"

Before becoming known as a musician, when I worked in a big department store, one day, during my lunch break, I came across a gallery where someone had painted a very rich white woman who had absolutely everything that you could desire in life, and she had the most solitary expression in the world. I had never been confronted with such solitude, and when I got back home, I wrote a piece that I called “Lonely Woman.”

From a 2011 interview of Coleman by Jacques Derrida in the New Yorker: www.newyorker.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:10am Jesse K:

Morning Kurt, welcome to the web!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:11am Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks, doug! good morning, jesse, and everyone out there in webioland.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:12am Mark Helsten:

That is perhaps my favourite version, on Old and New Dreams.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:14am Kurt Gottschalk:

it's a good one! i'm pretty partial to the 8 bold souls version, having heard them play it so many times when i lived in chicago.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:21am Mark Helsten:

Yeah, I don't know that one, and I am sure there are many more. Ed Blackwell is one of my favourite drummers, as well.. Actually that whole ensemble is somewhat of a 'dream team'
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:23am Kurt Gottschalk:

oh, it's an amazing band. one of my first jazz purchases, in fact. in the first 20, i'm sure. the 8 bold souls version was on this morning just before the kronos quartet one.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:28am Mark Helsten:

Ahh... that was the first one I heard. Tuning in and out as usual... Work gets in the way of serious jazz listening.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

I've always lamented that my sister went to Wesleyan. Because if she hadn't, I would have and then I would've gotten to study with Ed Blackwell.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

Cruelly, I must leave for work. Wonderful and fantastic stuff, Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:35am Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks, doug! i swear i'll go back on mic sometime before 2.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:36am Mark Helsten:

Kurt hates the mic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:41am Kurt Gottschalk:

i like the mic, i just like music better.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:41am V Priceless:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:42am Kurt Gottschalk:

i meed charlie haden back.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:43am Mark Helsten:

Well think of us, the listeners! We need a balance of yammering and music!
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:43am Mark Helsten:

(otherwise i could just put my ornette MP3s on random for five hours!)
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:44am Mark Helsten:

Yeah. Tragic loss there too... CH that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 10:46am Uncle Michael:

Oy. I was confused about the schedule.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 10:51am Gary:

I'm at work and can't tune in right now, but this looks awesome ... I know what I'll be listening to this weekend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:01am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...dawning on me what a fairly heroic stretch of DJing this is/shall be...
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:06am Mark Helsten:

Yes. Heroic! And I bet long in the planning stages...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:07am Kurt Gottschalk:

haha, still in the planning stages even now!
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:12am Mark Helsten:

Five hours = freedom
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:12am Uncle Michael:

If you're having technical issues, I sure don't hear 'em, Kurt.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:13am Mark Helsten:

And, if you are having a meltdown, we similarly cannot hear that.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:19am Mark Helsten:

This was the first thing I ever heard by Ornette Coleman, in Grade 10 or 11. Blew my mind and never looked back!
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:20am Dean:

First I heard, too, of Ornette (the original LP, I mean), but I was in grade 27.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:22am Mark Helsten:

Grade 27 was never easy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:22am Kurt Gottschalk:

i don't remember my first but, as with so many of my favorites, i know i didn't like it at first.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:23am Mark Helsten:

You were a young and full-of-spite punk!
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:26am frenchee:

Hola Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:27am Kurt Gottschalk:

i was never young.
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:27am Dean:

Not liking [fill in this blank] at first becomes an aesthetic of its own. I'll never forget first hearing the Juilliard SQ's first recording of Bartok's fifth played on SoCal's classical FM station one night. I was rapt, not least because I knew that the characteristics I didn't like were precisely the most compelling. By the time I heard Song X I'd accommodated that particular paradox.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:28am Kurt Gottschalk:

FRENCHEEEEE!
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:28am Mark Helsten:

You don't get to grade 27 for nothing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:29am Mike East:

whoa, looks like I tuned in at the right time. Greetings, DJKG.
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:29am frenchee:

"not liking at first" could be an FMU motto.
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:31am frenchee:

I guess Jeff got you all hooked up, eh? sounds great, much more fun than listening to my coworkers' patter and chatter
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:32am Kurt Gottschalk:

haha - next year's t-shirt. "I Didn't Like WFMU at First"
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 11:33am Mark Helsten:

"That Particular Paradox" on the back...
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:39am Dean:

"Accommodate the paradox!"
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:39am Tony:

The Dog Faced Hermans do a great version of Peace Warriors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 11:40am Kurt Gottschalk:

oh, dang tony! i forgot about that one!
  Wed. 6/24/15 11:41am Tony:

I like the version on their live album.
Avatar    Wed. 6/24/15 12:02pm listener james from westwood:

  Wed. 6/24/15 12:03pm P-90:

Hi Kurt. This is a worthy thing.
  Wed. 6/24/15 12:11pm P-90:

How hold up a second there, Mr. G. Some of Amanda's listeners are tuning in... and staying right here.
  Wed. 6/24/15 12:18pm frenchee:

oh HAI Skippy! Feelin' very Beefhearty alluva sudden
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 12:24pm Mike East:

was thinkin' that frenchee! This is IT, man!
  Wed. 6/24/15 12:28pm P-90:

I always thought the good Capt. was just a bit of a closet Harmolodicist.
Among many other things of course.
Avatar Wed. 6/24/15 1:06pm V Priceless:

whoa - time be flying!
  Wed. 6/24/15 1:16pm frenchee:

I have it on "low:" DJKG, have you cursed yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 1:20pm Kurt Gottschalk:

haven't needed to!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 6/24/15 1:22pm Jeff:

There's a scheduled show coming up at 3PM... but you have some open road ahead of you if you need a bit of time to decelerate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/24/15 1:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:
