Hey all - welcome to our final Monday OUTing!

On Wednesday you'll be opposite Ken's show. I hope you have funny gifs.
  12:07pm
Dean:

Just realized that contrary to my lament last week I CAN listen in on Wednesday mornings, at least during summer. A fortuitous parallel change of schedule!
Avatar 12:11pm
Jeff J:

Yo Duke! Glad to have you here. We'll up our GIF game, if necessary. We'll double down on the extreme sounds. Like, you know, "Roller Girl."
Avatar 12:11pm
Jeff J:

Hey Dean - Glad you can be with us for the summer, and hopefully beyond.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm
Jeff Golick:

Ken's gif-game is unparalleled. I think we should find a new direction... Smell-o-scope?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Jeff Golick:

The English-language "narrator" on this Zorn cut is playwright/director Richard Foreman.
  12:17pm
Dean:

This comes a year before "Forbidden Fruit," a compositional sibling.
  12:20pm
i k e:

Hi! Something else coming to this GTD slot?
Avatar 12:20pm
Jeff J:

Always wish I'd seen Zorn's opera with Foreman.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Jeff Golick:

@Dean: don't know "Forbidden Fruit!"

Hi, @i k e and welcome. The hour-long program I've been hosting on Wednesday mornings is moving to the noon-1pm slot on Mondays.
Avatar 12:23pm
Jeff J:

"Forbidden Fruit" is on the Nonesuch version of the "Spillane" disc - another great cut-up composition.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm
Jeff Golick:

The Foreman shows I saw in the 1990s were among the most singular theatre-going experiences I've ever had. I recall being perplexed and transfixed in equal measure most of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
Jeff Golick:

@Jeff J: oh yeah. I don't have that disc.
  12:25pm
Dean:

FF is also on the Kronos Quartet album "Winter Was Hard," along with compositions by others. FF was composed for KQ. The beauty of the piece when played back on LP is Marclay's skipping record near the end of the track, a neat little trompe l'oreille.
  12:26pm
i k e:

Cool.
Avatar 12:33pm
Jeff J:

Dean - Back when Kronos was doing really cutting edge work. I don't know that particular album, but there's a lot of fantastic stuff from that general period and just beyond. Their take on Zorn's cartoon S&M string quartet is interesting as well.
  12:36pm
Dean:

I had the good fortune of catching Kronos live a couple times in their early days. They'd program Beethoven and Bartok, and then perform a finale of a medley of TV show theme songs. Nuts.
  12:36pm
Dean:

Er, finale = encore.
  12:41pm
josh:

Wait, what time on Wednesdays?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey, @josh: 9am to noon.

D'oh! No more free jazz mornings for the west coast ;,(

Anyone else experiencing weird streaming issues at the moment?
  12:49pm
Dean:

Is the stream skipping around, or is this just more Zorn-like pastiche?
Avatar 12:49pm
Jeff J:

SORRY folks! Jeff G's internet connection keeps dropping!
Avatar 12:50pm
Jeff J:

Refresh and you'll hear the stream. Some old-timer jazz, not us. We're working to get back up.
Avatar 12:50pm
Jeff:

Have I ever mentioned that I kind of hate computers?
Avatar 12:52pm
Jeff J:

I feel you on the computer hate, Jeff.
Avatar 12:52pm

Everybody at home, just pick up a guitar or banjo. Have a singalong with your family.

I embrace the epithet Luddite.
Avatar 12:55pm

We're BACK. Refresh and you'll hear some Godard-inspired
Bryan Ferry.
  12:55pm
Dean:

Pretty sure Bryan Ferry isn't in Silkworm.
  12:55pm
Dean:

Ah, but is is in Bryan Ferry.
Avatar 12:56pm
Jeff J:

Dean - Silkworm's running recap of Godard's "Contempt" has been sacrificed to the radio gods of dead air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
pacific standard simon:

I'm hoping for a suite inspired by "Weekend".
Avatar 1:02pm

What do you say when someone ends a game of 501 with two triples then a final double-out?

Godard!

Hey, @pss: Three hours of horns honking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm

@josh: sorry about the West Coast time issue - understand completely. Maybe we can connect during the last hour?
Avatar 1:15pm

@pss - And 30 minutes of Maoist texts about workers rights. And 20 minutes of Alice in Wonderland.

I am here to tell you that internet-outage-induced flop sweat does not smell good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm
Jeff Golick:

(Of course, my current proximity to the guinea pigs cage is not helping.)
Avatar 1:19pm
Jeff J:

I'm thinking the guinea pigs can play a role in our new smell-o-vision feature debuting next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
pacific standard simon:

I have the same issue as josh; the show is great, but I won't be listening from 6-9 AM. But hey, at least I'll be able to listen live to Jeff G.'s show. If whatever job I find doesn't interfere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm
Jeff Golick:

They'd love that, Jeff.
Avatar 1:21pm
Jeff J:

@pss and @josh - hope you'll join us in the archives. Our recorded selves stay fairly fresh, for a few months at least.

Oh sure -- I already make frequent use of the archives.

Geez, how old was Michael Moore when this was recorded? Twelve?
  1:33pm

Checked. Moore is five years my senior!

That Japan record was his second appearance on wax, it looks like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm

The company I interviewed at this weekend has a 2nd Saturday live music program. The flyer for it shows a very nice looking Theremin set up in a woodland grove. This could be interesting.
Avatar 1:50pm
Jeff J:

@pss - sounds intriguing! Hope the job comes through.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm
Jeff Golick:

That does sound promising, @pss -- good luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm

I too continue to look for work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm

Ain't life a bitch? My old job closed its doors owing me 6 weeks pay. Hang in there, Jeff G.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

Thanks, man. There's always Cecil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm

I've got WFMU to keep me warm. Scouting cheap recipes while listening.
  2:23pm
Dean:

Following the Godard tribute I thought there might be a Ponty one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
Jeff Golick:

I'm not sure we know Ponty's work well enough (knowingly, anyway)!

Nice Cecil piece!

the Canterbury wood-elf:

Hey Jeffs, thanks for all this wonderful CT! I only discovered Tony Oxley last night on another FMU show (can't even remember which now).

Did you know Cecil was the primary influence on Mike Ratledge, the organ player in Soft Machine?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm
Stanley:

Good evening Jeff (for it is indeed evening here)
This Noon - 3pm (EDT) is just great for me. Sadly I will not be a live listener from now on.
Hopefully, Doug will keep us Europeans in mind and keep these premium slots filled for us to enjoy live in the virtual flesh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm
Jeff Golick:

Ah, sad to hear but understand completely, Stanley. Thanks for checking in.

And, no, @wood-elf, did not know that re Mike Ratledge/Soft Machine! We played some Oxley last week, I think, during a Barry Guy segment. He's amazing.
Avatar 2:48pm
Jesse K:

an excellent show today gents!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm
Jeff Golick:

Hey thanks, @Jesse!
Avatar 2:53pm
Jeff:

Yeah, cool show! I look forward to catching the bits I missed later via the excellent high-quality archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm
pacific standard simon:

Gotta run! Thanks for all the swingin' OUT Monday mornings, Jeff & Jeff!
  2:56pm
Dean:

The Oxley records with Bill Dixon, Papyrus, are killer, too. Would love to hear their recording with Taylor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm
the Canterbury wood-elf:

@JG There's a pretty rough-sounding live release of the Softs recorded in London '68 called "Middle Earth Masters" in which Ratledge does some pretty crazy soloing, that's probably where it's most evident. It was Daevid Allen, travelling from Australia, who introduced the receptive Canterbury youth to Ra, Monk, Taylor, et al.
  2:57pm
josh:

Thanks Jeffs! See you in the past in the future...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm

Bye, @pacific standard simon! And thanks!
Thank you, @Jeff -- hope the earlier internet trouble didn't mess the archives up too much.
