Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

The songs on this series are often trimmed I've noticed. Beware, no drum solo in Edgar Winter's Frankenstien!
  Fri. 5/8/15 12:33pm 67tele:

that Falling Lady kinda reminds me of My Midnight Confession... I wonder if they have that Sutherland Bros. & Quiver song ('i dont really love ya but ya got me anyway' or whatever it was called) in there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:35pm pacific standard simon:

Los Angeles was weird, because there was more than one strong AM top-40 station. KHJ was the leader, but KRLA was popular too. Some songs you would only hear on one or the other, not both.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:35pm efd:

After that build-up I was expecting "Popcorn." :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:38pm Uncle Michael:

It would take nine shows to play them all...so you're all going to experience a few disappointments!

wow i didnt know meat loaf sang for these guys...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Would you say these are between Bubblegum & A.M. Gold? - all early so far (~1970) - & I'm honestly surprised how good they all are - just well-done PopRock (cherry-picked of course)...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:40pm Webhamster Henry:

Oh Jeez, there are 25 volumes of these? It'll take a decade to hear them all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

I'd say that's a fair description.
Avatar    Fri. 5/8/15 12:41pm Roberto:

Hmm this is somebody's bed music...can't place it at the moment.
  Fri. 5/8/15 12:41pm 67tele:

good way to spend a decade tho...
Avatar    Fri. 5/8/15 12:41pm Roberto:

Mary Wing maybe?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:41pm Webhamster Henry:

I already spent that decade!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:41pm pacific standard simon:

And KHJ had an unpleasant habit of inserting a whispered voice-over a couple of times in a new song when they had a pre-release copy that no one else had: "K-H-J exclusive..." They did that with "The Long And Winding Road", IIRC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:42pm Webhamster Henry:

... which is not to denigrate this excellent, educational show.
Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 12:42pm buck turgidson:

ham, joe, frank, reynolds!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:43pm pacific standard simon:

Imagine how filthy this song would sound if a woman sang it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:43pm Uncle Michael:

Joe Frank is one guy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

@Roberto: It's sampled in Tamar of Are We There Yet's bed music?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:44pm listener james from westwood:

And it is excellent in its original context!
Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 12:44pm buck turgidson:

never knew that!
Avatar    Fri. 5/8/15 12:44pm Roberto:

Maybe, although now that I think of it, Mary Wing definitely uses the intro as talkover music sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

Dave Dee was one guy too.
Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 12:46pm still b/p:

Bits of Mark's number sounded too close to "Arizona," and his whole team should've been scolded. But scolds are set aside and purchases are tax-free and Happy Hour prices apply all day everywhere for the birthday today.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:46pm Uncle Michael:

This show might go long today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:47pm Alex In Illinois:

@Pacific Standard Simon: I remember some radio stations in St. Louis doing that whisper voice-over thing over the beginnings of many songs too.
Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 12:50pm buck turgidson:

was just about to request One Toke Over the Line
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:50pm Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:51pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 12:51pm pacific standard simon:

Alex, there was a chain of top-40 stations across the country, the Drake stations, which KHJ was a part of. They often shared station theme music too. KFRC in San Francisco was another.
  Fri. 5/8/15 12:54pm Dean:

Don't tell me. Five Man Electrical Band was one guy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 12:54pm Jeff Golick:

Gus Dudgeon also produced "Cordon Bleu" by Solution, a Dutch jazz/prog/pop instrumental outfit. The LP appeared on Elton John's Rocket Records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 1:02pm Alex In Illinois:

Signs was Crabby Appleton? I thought it was Paper Lace. Wait! I think have had this same exact exchange before. I don't know why I incorrectly recall it as being by Paper Lace all the time. Did Paper Lace do a version?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 1:03pm pacific standard simon:

@Uncle Michael - You should mess with us by substituting a cover version from one of Michael Shelley's marathon premiums for an original song, without telling us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 1:04pm pacific standard simon:

@Alex - "Signs" was by Five Man Electrical Band.

Thank you Monica. I plan to make the next year a living hell for Doug.

@ndbob - I always thought that "Ride Captain Ride" might have been inspired by the Indian takeover of Alcatraz Island. The timing's about right.

Mike Post Theme by the Who from Endless Wire. Not one of their better songs but it pops into my head every time I hear a Mike Post song.

I actually remember learning line dances with a record player playing a well-worn record of Let Your Love Flow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 5/8/15 2:32pm Alex In Illinois:

My younger sister over-played her record of Undercover Angel so much that I took it away from her and hid it for a day or two.

@Simon reading about it now - seems it refers to 73 keys on the keyboard

Sorry, stuck on LIARBTRRM. Turns out it was previously registered as "I Think I'll Write a Blues" in 1972! Credit to Dolph & DiFranco. See p. 2200, entry EU427525: babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015085477688;view=1up;seq=488

this show is also reminding me of Negativland/Over The Edge Dick Vaughn's Moribund Music of the 70s.

Black Betty...a Kasenetz & Katz production. What?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Is that a good thing?
Fri. 5/8/15 2:46pm Alex In Illinois:

How many other Leadbelly songs got this treatment?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 2:47pm pacific standard simon:

I think they all should.
Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 2:48pm Evan in NC:

Is that Al Stewart?
Avatar    Fri. 5/8/15 2:48pm Rich in Washington:

It's a good thing, UM. The execution of the Negativland radio show was done in the 1980s, and made to make KPFA listeners think that their favorite hippy dippy community radio station had been taken over by a big company and turned into an all-70s format radio station

Uncle M - Hall of Fame show! Right up there alongside last year's July 4th weekend Loss Leaders marathon! Thanks!
Avatar    Fri. 5/8/15 2:49pm Rich in Washington:

I think 70s music was really considered insidious and odious at that time but now it's aged like fine wine, or in most cases, cheese.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 5/8/15 2:49pm Stevel:

Yup. Classic show. Lives up to the anniversary billing.
Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 2:50pm chromaphone:

Avatar Fri. 5/8/15 2:51pm chromaphone:

I have a 2 friends who are into 70s music and have no recollection of this song and I am just shocked. Bass reminds me of P McCartney.

Avatar    Fri. 5/8/15 2:52pm Rich in Washington:

I always thought that that Sniff 'n' the Tears song had the most unfortunate artist name/song title juxtapositions ever but maybe it says more about my brain than anything else.

The particular sticky-notes of memory are...particular: I always recall a guy being excited about Black Betty when it had just come out, a guy who had an orange Camaro, a car he wanted to be regarded as hotter than it really was.

Fox on the Run reminds me of the AM radio in mom's car which I used daily, an orange Maverick with the sport trim package, which I never regarded as hot, and I never wanted anyone else to assume I regarded it as hot when I was driving it.
