Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:49am Roberto:

There's a new vegan cheese shop in West Hollywood. Vromage. I recommend that as well.

Joe, you're a peach. <3
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:51am coelacanth:

i don't care much for the LA area; but there is some good hiking in angeles state park. just don't be surprised when a black helicopter pops up quietly out of the valley to see what you're doing.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:51am d¢ pät:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 9:55am Marcel M:

Joe go to El Mercado de Los Angeles!! I'm PRETTY sure thats what it is called. Its a huge Mexican market with all these different vendors selling wild stuff. Then on the top there is a Mariachi Restaurant that is amazing. In general, hang out in East LA and eat Tacos. Also R Bar in Korea town is pretty cool and getting Korean BBQ in K town is sweet. Also getting lost in a rent a car in Beverly Hills and that HUGE park over there is sweet too. Also Hollywood Forever cemetery! And maybe catch a show at The Smell downtown depending on who is playing.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:55am Joe McG:

Listen to DJ Trouble, it will be a great show! I'm going!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 9:56am sphere:

More on Vromage:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 9:56am Marcel M:

The Smell is interesting compared to places like that in NYC. In NYC, all ages means you get an X on your hand but they serve or you can bring booze in. At The Smell, you can't bring anything in, so everybody drinks and does drugs in the parking lot next store... it really is another world over there!
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:57am coelacanth:

i'd like to go that sarah records thing. i cannot.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:58am Joe McG:

@Greg: I'm just going to miss you! I'm coming back for my show on April 29th. @Marcel/Roberto: Thanks for the tips!
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:58am d¢ pät:

Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 9:58am Trouble:

joe! have you ever pasted an image into our playlists/ next to the music area? i just figured it out ( duh...). copy and paste that link i just put up into the area that says image (in song area), and a wonderful poster will appear. magic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 10:00am Marcel M:

Wow, Vromage.. hahaha. LA is a strange place I could probably never live but I find myself drawn there for some reason... I think I'd die if I moved there though.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:01am Joe McG:

@Trouble: Yes, I'm usually too scattered during the show to do it, but I have done it in the past. Kind of rarely, though!
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:01am Roberto:

I've been eating vegan cheeses for 25 years, but Vromage offers the best variety I've seen thus far. Smoky Gouda, Creamy Pepperjack, Meunster...just to name a few.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:02am d¢ pät:

wow. sounds good Roberto. I gotta try stuff. Pricey to order on line though...
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:03am d¢ pät:

what's the best vegan cheese you can buy in groceries? like Whole Foods or somethign?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 10:04am Greg from Bloomfield:

Son of a! I just booked with airbnb on the beach in San Diego, then I'm heading up to LA since all my friends live there now.

Farmer's Daughter for brunch. It's right by LACMA and the tar pits. And the line at Pink's is worth it for their insane hot dog experience.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:04am Cheri Pi:

me too Roberto! I buy Daiya pre-shredded and use it sparingly, at least it melts and with a light layer of marmite underneath it makes lovely grilled sandwiches.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 10:05am fleep:

And if you feel carnivorus, Joe, you should try Umami Burger. Also if you've never been to LACMA there's a German Expressionist Film exhibit there now, and of course a gigantic suspended boulder to stand under. The Grand Central Market downtown is amazing.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:05am d¢ pät:

Thanks Pi. I've heard good things about Daiya but tried it once and found it painty...
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:05am coelacanth:

i would hang around for a week, trying the different pseudo-cheeses...but i don't eat much cheese anyway, and don't want to eat too much soy.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:05am Joe McG:

@fleep: The German films sound right up my alley! Thanks!
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:06am Roberto:

There was also a woman on Shark Tank recently pitching her vegan cheeses. Most of the Sharks loved them. Gonna try that next.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:07am Roberto:

Oh, and bonus...pretty much all those Vromage cheeses are K for P since they're made almost entirely from nuts.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:07am ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

@Greg - jealous of your trip. I love Sandy Eggo. Caught the samurai show at LACMA a couple of months ago. Love that place.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:08am Cheri Pi:

When Mr. CP worked in the kitchen of a pizza place they swore by using Vegan Gourmet brand cheeze, it's a bit pricey and tastes good when it's melted.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:08am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I prefer a more stucco-like cheese. Or something that resembles a good contractor-grade pumice.
Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:10am pierre:

and @CheriPi : as a token french guys, I must live up to my cliché : "VEGAN GOURMET CHEEESE !!?!"

Avatar Thu. 4/16/15 10:10am Roberto:

Soy un nino distraido al momento.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 4/16/15 10:12am Greg from Bloomfield:

@Jennique: I'm only there for a couple days (knocking out all the baseball stadiums in SoCal...) So I decided to skip all of the downtown area in favor of a long bike ride.

I think LA tips depend on what you're interested in, Joe. I'd probably end up in Book Soup for hours. Wacko used to be interesting. Nowadays, its La Luz de Jesus Gallery might interest you.
Foodwise, I agree with Marcel: Latino and Korean are the way to go. The Kogi truck is an interesting combo of the two. Ham Ji Park, Yu Chun, Dan Sung Sa, Tamales Elena or Tacos Villa Corona are good. The sandwiches at Philippe the Original are good, and the prices are low. Hawkins House of Burgers in Watts is great, even if the neighbourhood is rough. The noodles at Shaanxi Gourmet are superb.

For the vegans and vegetarians among us, I wonder if any of the ones with experience of LA can say what Vege Paradise is like? They try to make their food look like animal protein (like making "skin" for their "fish" dishes out of seaweed), which is a strategy that I am of two minds about.

@dc pat: I think the more recent immigrations influence character more than the accent. Like Edinburgh historically was all French/English-influenced, so it's very different from the Jewish/Irish/Italian-influenced Glasgow. While the language in both is very influenced by French and Scandinavian languages. Liverpool also has a strong Jewish/Irish history. Some people theorise this is why there are so many comedians from Liverpool and Glasgow.
