Joe go to El Mercado de Los Angeles!! I'm PRETTY sure thats what it is called. Its a huge Mexican market with all these different vendors selling wild stuff. Then on the top there is a Mariachi Restaurant that is amazing. In general, hang out in East LA and eat Tacos. Also R Bar in Korea town is pretty cool and getting Korean BBQ in K town is sweet. Also getting lost in a rent a car in Beverly Hills and that HUGE park over there is sweet too. Also Hollywood Forever cemetery! And maybe catch a show at The Smell downtown depending on who is playing.

The Smell is interesting compared to places like that in NYC. In NYC, all ages means you get an X on your hand but they serve or you can bring booze in. At The Smell, you can't bring anything in, so everybody drinks and does drugs in the parking lot next store... it really is another world over there!

Son of a! I just booked with airbnb on the beach in San Diego, then I'm heading up to LA since all my friends live there now.

Farmer's Daughter for brunch. It's right by LACMA and the tar pits. And the line at Pink's is worth it for their insane hot dog experience.
Avatar 10:04am

me too Roberto! I buy Daiya pre-shredded and use it sparingly, at least it melts and with a light layer of marmite underneath it makes lovely grilled sandwiches.

And if you feel carnivorus, Joe, you should try Umami Burger. Also if you've never been to LACMA there's a German Expressionist Film exhibit there now, and of course a gigantic suspended boulder to stand under. The Grand Central Market downtown is amazing.

I think LA tips depend on what you're interested in, Joe. I'd probably end up in Book Soup for hours. Wacko used to be interesting. Nowadays, its La Luz de Jesus Gallery might interest you.
Foodwise, I agree with Marcel: Latino and Korean are the way to go. The Kogi truck is an interesting combo of the two. Ham Ji Park, Yu Chun, Dan Sung Sa, Tamales Elena or Tacos Villa Corona are good. The sandwiches at Philippe the Original are good, and the prices are low. Hawkins House of Burgers in Watts is great, even if the neighbourhood is rough. The noodles at Shaanxi Gourmet are superb.

For the vegans and vegetarians among us, I wonder if any of the ones with experience of LA can say what Vege Paradise is like? They try to make their food look like animal protein (like making "skin" for their "fish" dishes out of seaweed), which is a strategy that I am of two minds about.

Red Medicine is really well known for the use of local wild grasses and flowers. It's an interesting place. LA has a lot of head-to-tail type places nowadays, like Phnom Penh Noodle Restaurant, Happy Garden (renowned for their blanched pig intestine), Larry's, Animal or Kokekokko (the off-menu chicken butts are great).

While I can get the point of vegetarian bacon, soysages, etc. I just don't see much point in feeling the need to make vegetarian dishes look like meat at a restaurant. Like serving "roast chicken" that is just carefully shaped soy curd. Unless the point is to be really adventurous and surprising, in some Heston Blumenthal-ish way, it seems totally unnecessary.

@dc pat: I think the more recent immigrations influence character more than the accent. Like Edinburgh historically was all French/English-influenced, so it's very different from the Jewish/Irish/Italian-influenced Glasgow. While the language in both is very influenced by French and Scandinavian languages. Liverpool also has a strong Jewish/Irish history. Some people theorise this is why there are so many comedians from Liverpool and Glasgow.
