Tonight: Aerial View Auto Show!
As the son of a mechanic, I always took an interest in cars. I'm not alone. The biggest April opening in Hollywood history goes to a film where the cars are the stars: Fast & Furious 7.

I talk about cars the way some people talk about sports. But I've never had an auto show of my own... until now!

Tonight, join me for the first-ever Aerial View Auto Show (not to be confused with the New York International Auto Show, now at the Jacob Javits Center). as we try not to spin our wheels and get answers to these questions and many more:
  • Do you own a car?
  • If not, why not?
  • If so: which make and model
  • How did you decide what to buy?
  • What's most important to you: MPG, safety or style?
  • What's your best and worst car ever?
  • Who's you mechanic?
  • Most importantly, what's the greatest car song of all time?
Hit the gas and give a call 201-209-WFMU! Extra points if you call from your car.

Now check out these fine rides I ogled at the New York Auto Show...

Every Car I Ever Owned
Vw BeetleMy first car was a Volkswagen Beetle I bought for $95 from a friend's father. I was sixteen, just got my learner's permit, riding an orange and black Jawa Moped everywhere and Mike's old man offered me a non-running Bug for under $100. I bit, thinking I can fix it. I no longer remember what was actually wrong with the car. I can't even remember what color it was. Mike's father made it seem no big deal, dead battery? alternator shot? We got rope and tied the VW's front bumper to Mike's father's Ford back bumper and he towed me from North Lindenhurst to just south of Montauk Highway, a distance of maybe three miles. I was able to steer and brake but coming down my block, South 5th, something spooked me and I hit the brakes too hard. The Ford tore the VW's bumper clean off and I came to a slow rolling stop one hundred feet from my house. Mike's father got out of his car and yelled at me, right in front of John Watt's house. Then he helped me push the Bug to a spot in front of my house, where the damn thing sat until a few months later when my mother insisted I have it towed away. I got $50 for it from a local junkyard, not the first time I'd lose money on a car.

Mercury-Cougar-1967AMy second car was an orange-gold 1967 Mercury Cougar, the first year for the model. I paid Billy K. $300 for it a few months after the VW went south. It didn't have a single body panel without dents and the hood would fly up if you went faster than thirty. I had to use a bicycle cable to lock it closed. Locking and unlocking the hood quickly became a pain in the ass. That was the car I hit the school bus with. I was waiting at a light to make a left onto Railroad Ave. from Wellwood and gunned it when the light went green. The car didn't have a limited-slip differential (what's called "Posi-Traction" in a General Motors product) so it spun to the left smack dab into a school bus waiting for the light. The accident could've turned out much worse for me but the woman driving the bus was a good friend of my sister's and she pretty much let me off the hook. I don't even think she called the police...

1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring Ad-1The Cougar lasted a little less than a year and then it was time to go searching yet again for another set of cheap, serviceable wheels. Because my brother Mario was a Mopar man (and a mechanic) I thought I should go with a Chrysler, Plymouth or Dodge. I found a 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring in the Pennysaver and paid somewhere around $500 for it. It was a sweet little ride - powered by the venerable 318 - and every time I jumped behind the wheel I felt like Richard Petty in his famous number 43 stock car. I had just put about $800 worth of work into the car when a kid in an AMC Pacer hit me head on as I headed to Music Land to buy a set of strings for my guitar. The bad news? The Satellite was totalled. The good news: I sued the kid in Small Claims Court and got my $800 back.

73Ply24813-1-1I set out to find another Satellite and ended up with a green '73, for around $700. The less said about that piece of crap.the better.

70Chr22BAfter the debacle of the '73 Satellite I went backwards in time yet again and scooped up a 1970 Chrysler Newport. It was cream with a black vinyl roof and the largest car I'd ever owned, even though it was a two door. The damn thing was fast, though: the 383 under the hood moved it along nicely. I was coming back from CBGBs one night when the power died, the car went dark and I was left sitting at the side of the road for a few hours waiting for a tow truck. There had been an electrical fire beneath the dashboard, all the wiring burnt up and my mechanic told me to get rid of it. I did.

I took a break from Mopars when I noticed my mechanic had a 1971 rust-brown 4-door Chevy Impala for sale for an obscene price: $100.1971Impala052504-2The Impala was the only car I've ever owned A) which had working air-conditioning and B) on which I actually MADE money. I drove it for six months or so and then got broadsided coming back from my friend Mike's house one night. The damage was confined to the driver's side rear door and the car was still very driveable but the other guy's insurance company still coughed up $600. The Impala suffered a cracked head not too long after and also ended up in the local junkyard.

66 CadillacI took the $600 and bought my one and only Cadillac: a black 1966 Sedan DeVille. It had something shy of 80,000 miles on it and was in nearly pristine shape. It had power everything and I installed a custom sound-system, a removeable Panasonic cassette deck and some Pioneer 6" x 9" speakers in the rear deck. The first tape I popped in was a Black Sabbath compilation tape and I still remember cranking that thing up as loud as it would go while banging my head to Supernaut. The Caddy got a lousy seven miles to the gallon and lasted me just about thirty days. I demolished it when I came around a bend on Woodhaven Blvd. in Queens and hit a four-foot-by-four-foot stack of Daily News Sunday editions, being unloaded from a van into the right lane by two guys, one of whom I thought I killed when he jumped out of the way. What can I say? It was four in the morning, the roadway was dark and I just didn't see them. Luckily, no one was injured and the cops were very nice - which is more than I can say for my mother. When I woke her up with my frantic phone call, she screamed into the phone, "DIDN'T I TELL YOU NOT TO DRIVE IN QUEENS?!"  I managed to talk my mechanic into driving out from Long Island and towing me all the way back. I sold the Caddy for parts, earning back $400.

1972 Fury CrashedAfter a detour into General Motors products I decided a return to Mopar was in order. Once again I scoured the Newsday classifieds (back then there was no craigslist, no eBay and - for all I know - nothing that remotely resembled the Internet) and before too long found a 1972 Plymouth Fury. It was a two-door, metallic brown with matching vinyl roof and a 360 under the hood. Six days after buying the car I was sitting at a red light at Jackson Avenue in Queens with my friend Paul when I was rear-ended by a Checker cab. I was knocked unconscious and if not for Paul's quick thinking - from the passenger side he reached over with his left foot and hit the brakes, while grabbing the steering wheel -  we probably would've both been killed. We crawled out the passenger door, falling into a spreading puddle of gas (good thing neither of us smoked!), shaking glass from our hair. The Checker must've been doing eighty, considering the damage done to the Fury. I sued the cab company, eventually garnering roughly $6,000, part of which I used to buy a...

68 New Yorker 1-2...1968 Chrysler New Yorker for sale a few towns over. I grabbed a set of old license plates, a stack of $100 bills and harangued my Aunt Isabel into giving me a lift to my potential new set of wheels. I took the New Yorker for a test drive and the owner made a point of cautioning me about the car's brutish acceleration and somewhat inadequate brakes. I loved the car's rakish yet classy styling - a two-door fastback, white with black vinyl roof, black vinyl interior, bucket seats, center console shift and power everything - so I peeled off $1000 and peeled away. It was like the Caddy but way cooler... and way faster. Ironically, I moved to New Jersey in that car and had lots of fun cruising all over the state, including a high-speed run out Route 80 to Waterloo, New Jersey to see Johnny Cash. I was on Route 80 again about a year later when the New Yorker's engine threw a rod. Not willing to spend what it would cost to get it fixed, I regretfully let it go and prepared to replace it quickly. Which is how I ended up with...

1974 Nova...a 1974 Chevy Nova. If I had time to shop around I probably would've bought something else. But I was commuting back and forth to a new job and couldn't afford to miss a day. The Nova was available locally and cheap at $700. Compared to the New Yorker it was bare bones transportation with a bench seat, column shift, power nothing and hideous maroon paint job. It did, however, have a 350 under the hood and moved even faster than the New Yorker, due to its lighter weight. I left rubber all over New Jersey in that Nova and only sold it (for $700, what I paid for it) when a friend of mine offered me a high-mileage 1979 Jeep Wagoneer for free.

1979Jeepwagoneer4DoorThe Wagoneer featured the short-lived Quadra-Trac four-wheel drive system (I still don't know exactly how it worked) was a cool two-tone blue and had a nasty habit of shattering rear windows if you closed the tailgate improperly. I probably replaced three or four windows on that beast before finally giving up on it a few years later in 1989.

P1010004I wanted another four-wheel drive vehicle and realized it was time to buy something new, rather than the rusted-out shit-boxes to which I'd grown accustomed. I arranged a bank loan and again took to the classifieds, locating a 1987 Jeep Wrangler in the northwest corner of New Jersey. It was a first-year model, Colorado Red with black interior, hard and soft tops and 31,000 miles on it, being sold by a young woman returning to college for her sophomore year. I paid roughly $8,000 for it, more than all the cars I'd previously purchased combined. I drove that Jeep for fourteen years, sinking ungodly amounts of money into it and finally letting it go after it caught fire on Route 1 & 9 Southbound, just over the Pulaski Skyway. I sold it on eBay and got a respectable $3,500 for it from a used car dealer in Scottsdale, Arizona (they shipped it out on in a railroad container).

1983 MbAfter the rough ride and handling of the Jeep I was ready for something more civilized. A friend owned a Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo-Diesel that I'd borrow when my Jeep was in the shop for extended periods (which it too often was). I liked the way the 300D handled, the layout of the interior and its compact size do I decided to find one for myself - which I did, on eBay. It's a 1983 (300D Turbo-Diesels were produced from 1981 to 1985) and my winning bid came in at $3,000. I took a train and two buses down to Deptford, New Jersey, slapped on my old Jeep plates and headed for the nearest motor vehicle office to make things legal.

Mbaccident1 About six months after buying the Mercedes I was involved in an accident while on my way to WFMU to do Aerial View. A young woman in a Isuzu Rodeo made a left in front of me and I caught the rear corner of her bumper with the right front quarter of my car. I went through an uphill battle with the insurance company but eventually got them to pay off properly. My mechanic said I should get the car fixed, that the engine and drivetrain were in great shape, so I did. I'm still driving it today and hope to hang on to it for many more years, though this past winter has taken its toll and the cancer of rust may finally send it to its final resting place. What's next? Good question. Maybe another 300D. Maybe another Jeep. Maybe, just maybe, an electric car...

Last Week: Presence
Last week's show practically made my head explode (see above). We tried to have a discussion of the different ways you acquire and listen to music, prompted by this new Tidal service from Jay Z. and the Pono player from Neil Young. Remind me never to try that again.

Here are some playlist comments:
  • I don't trust my ears to deliver great sounds anymore due to my own stupidity (lack of hearing protection worn, in my youth). So, I can't claim to be an audiophile. To me, CD is good enough. Digital downloads are usually good enough. Yes, I love vinyl, but I think its a romantic notion to me at this point. No plans for Pono or Tidal for me.
  • I wanna start a music streaming service that makes all audio sound like Rock & Roll being played thru a 1960's transistor radio! Who's with me? Yay!
  • Hi Chris and all! What I don't get about PONO is Lossless files are great quality, it really doesn't matter that they are digital. You can play lossless files in your car. What the hell is Neil Young talking about?
  • These days I listen to vinyl for a number of reasons, none of which have anything to do with fidelity. I'm fed up with CD's skipping, which is mostly my fault because I didn't take good enough care of them in my 20's...I find its easier to take care of vinyl simply because you can just throw them on a spindle and toss them around your car. I also like the limits of physical media. I get too overwhelmed by the infinite possibilities of the internet and digital media. I let WFMU sort through that and filter out the garbage for me.
  • if you grew up recording songs off the radio onto a realistic cassette recorder and listening to scratchy vinyl (like me) then these stoopid services aren't for you. well, me anyway. not to mention that jay z is an asshat.
  • Jimi Hendrix wouldn't been there; thats for freaking certain.
Jack White has officially joined the ranks of these self aggrandizing ass wipes like Kanye West & Jay z, eck..
  • Wow. That anti-Pono video screed is really mean-spirited, and ultimately not actually a useful addition to the world. I don't actually understand the psychology of people who take it as their mission to be professional debunkers, especially those who specialize in making fun of any audio equipment they've made up their minds must not be worth buying - and they always, always make up their minds based on some theoretical consideration they're convinced is carved in stone, never based on actually listening to the stuff.

@spodiodi, non-hipster Bklyn = Sunset Park. Tacos, hand-pulled noodles, banh mi, and homemade chorizo all around. Still some factories here too, incl. a pita chip factory next to a strip joint up in Green-Wood Hts/S. Slope. There's also Midwood, Kensington, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, etc. etc. etc. N-H Bklyn is legion.
