From the imdb message bd:
For years I saw Frizzell as a character actor, often playing lumpy looking farmers, ranchers ,etc. in westerns on TV., but it was only a few years ago that I found out what an extraordinary person he was.

In 1941, my stepfather, Al Ino, a THIRD GENERATION Japanese American was incarcerated in Manzanar Internment camp with his whole family, when he was 17 years old.( see additional comments under "Come See the Paradise")

There are 2 photos of my stepfather taken by the famous photographer Ansel Adams sitting in a music singing class for teenage internees-

--teaching the class is LOU FRIZZELL, who obviously must have generously volunteeered his time to do this in the camps-- not a very popular thing to do in those times either--it took COURAGE.

Does anybody out there know the fuller story and background of Mr. Frizzell?
I was wondering if he was a Quaker, as many of them taught and provided assistance to the internees.

He must have helped my stepfather continue his love for music, because he played the saxophone , and told me he was an extra in the film "Flower Drum Song" as the sax player in the band in the Asian nightclub scene.

Thank you, Mr. Frizzell

@Greg My wife and daughter will now be fully indoctrinated into my radio obsessions - WFMU and the old Goon Show. Check out the Goon Show if you are not familiar. This is the show Peter Sellers got his start. Every episode is some sort of conspiracy and they sound as though they were torn from today's newspapers. A little racist at times but Spike Mulligan skewers the British idiocies as well so it evens out - sort of... Worth a listen.

Some day, possibly for marathon, someone will put on a three-hour set highlighting fascinating DJs from way back to present. Maybe two sets.

Anyone recommend a solid book on DJs in the 50s and early 60s? Other periods?
  Sat. 2/14/15 2:59pm ScottC:

@Shawn sort of... Maybe the other way around Spike Mulligan was a absurdist comic genius - in the 50's like an LSD trip...

@Stevel: Just read Wolfman Jack's autobiography– fun read!
  Sat. 2/14/15 11:40pm Mark Dillman:

Stevel: Two titles to recommend: "Pied Pipers of Rock 'n' Roll: Radio Deejays of the '50s and '60s" by Wes Smith, Longstreet Press, 1989, and "Dewey & Elvis: the Life and Times of a Rock 'n' Roll Deejay" by Louis Cantor, University of Illinois Press, 2005.
  Sun. 2/15/15 6:40pm Matty:

Rex, what is that cool flute (and maybe clarinet/orchestra) music you play regularly while announcing, this week, from about 1:30-136. It is starting to sink in and play in my mind regularly. The only cure I know for this is to obtain the music and play repeatedly until it stops. So I gotta know what it is...
  Tue. 2/17/15 5:24pm Rex:

Ah, yes. A mesmerizing track indeed. It's Jimmie Haskell "Venus" off of his album "Countdown"...I think it has been reissued on CD...
Stay Tuned! Rex
