Options January 27, 2015: I'm Stranded in Radio City
Due to Blizzard Juno, I will not be on the air live tonight. If all goes well you will instead hear the VERY SPECIAL AERIAL VIEW I recorded while stranded in Radio City (Apartments). As I write this, I have the TV on in my tenth floor room and (so far) there's no change in the predicted one to two feet or more of snow expected here in NYC.

Outside my window there is a constant thrum from the snowblowers and salt spreaders. The streets are beginning to empty as anyone with sense heads home to hunker down. Why haven't I headed home? It's not because I have no sense. I work in radio (which might be the same thing as having no sense) and they've asked me to be on the air tomorrow. The only way to guarantee I'll be there is to stay nearby tonight. If I go home there's a good chance I won't get back. So here I sit, writing this and assembling a radio show.

A half dozen times I've stayed overnight in the city due to "weather emergencies" (including Hurricane Sandy). Each time I do I feel like a bad husband for leaving my wife at home to fend for herself. I worry about the power going out, something falling on the house, some other unforeseen calamity. And I'm unable to get across the Hudson River.

I've talked about this before on the air but it bears repeating: snow blows, in every sense of the word. There was a brief window during my childhood (see the Obligatory Throwback photo, below) when I'd actually play in the stuff. But nowadays it's just a hindrance and a nuisance. I look forward to the day when I don't live in a place where snow happens. Until then, please enjoy my snow day.

Checking in from Boston...you guys lucked out...24 inches here.

Yep.

Howdy Folks--checking in from Somerville, MA
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:12pm Sherm:

So you booked a room for two days for this mess?
Avatar Tue. 1/27/15 6:12pm drewo:

NYC got to fine-tune their crowd control curfew procedures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/27/15 6:18pm Chris T.:

Yes, Sherm: but I cancelled the 2nd night.
Avatar Tue. 1/27/15 6:22pm Paul D:

I love these walk around episodes of Ariel View, like the flea market episodes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:22pm dale:

love this - it's like the last words of a dying man. but snowmegeddon got snowmegone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:27pm George of Troy:

I'm really enjoying the format of this episode as well. Also, I couldn't agree more regarding your thoughts on snow, Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/27/15 6:27pm Mike East:

last night they weren't letting people onto the second floor of the port authority because there were too many people up there already. After about 20 minutes, the police started calling out gates that were allowed to go up. As I made my way, I was expecting HUGE lines, but I ended up walking right onto the bus.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:27pm LES:

We got 7 inches of snow on the LES. Storm of the century was storm of the centimeters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:28pm chris:

This is great stuff, Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/27/15 6:28pm Chris T.:

Thanks for all the love!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:29pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Crazy that at no point leading up to this, no one said "This could blow out to sea and it won't be bad at all."
Avatar Tue. 1/27/15 6:29pm Paul D:

@Mike I witnessed that, what a nightmare, but I was surprised at how fast I got on the bus. I thought I was going to be there for 3 hours but happy waiting just 1.
Avatar Tue. 1/27/15 6:30pm Paul D:

I for sure thought a fight was going to break out.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:30pm LES:

The remotes are always good ChrisT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Tue. 1/27/15 6:31pm Mike East:

Yeah, Paul D - quote, when I got to the bottom of the stairs to stand in the crowd "This is so much worse than I expecting"....then when I was allowed to go upstairs and there were no lines at my gate, "This is so much better than I was expecting."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:31pm dale:

i was all excited because we were supposed to go on a snowmobile club poker run this weekend. which is cancelled. if you have to have snow at least enjoy it.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:34pm Robert:

Ken, if you listened closely to the audio from the hotel room, one forecaster was allowing for exactly that possibility.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:35pm Rocco:

This may be the bourbon talking, but I feel like I'm walking along side of you. Thanks for the journey.
Avatar Tue. 1/27/15 6:36pm Paul D:

It just seems like such a struggle to live here now. Port Authority is like a perfect metaphor for it, and NYC has just become the worlds largest duty free shop...
Avatar Tue. 1/27/15 6:39pm Mister Dobalina:

Awesome tune, the Cajun jam !
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:39pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Robert - Yeah, I may have generalized. I didn't watch or listen to the weather reports on TV very much. I was checking web sites more than TV watching.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:45pm Robert:

I wonder if those enemy neighborhoods have been portrayed in some form in <I>Underworld</I>.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:46pm Rocco:

Coveting again. Time for more bourbon.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:46pm Robert:

Darn, I forgot no HTML here, sorry. Glad I didn't break something with those attempted tags. Trouble is, another window I have open is blog-and-comment that does take HTML tags, so it was an honest, if negligent, confusion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Tue. 1/27/15 6:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Let us count our blessings for avoiding strife and trouble from this near miss.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:54pm Falcon:

Really great show tonight. Chris.
  Tue. 1/27/15 6:56pm LES:

True Ken.

Good show ChrisT.
  Tue. 1/27/15 7:00pm Robert:

My favorite "Grin & Bear It": "Next time, remember: The red lines are roads, the blue lines are rivers!
