i love the documentary about townes- over the closing credits he's just putting on different trucker caps with feed mill names and such and trying not to laugh

Who would win the gloom & doom showdown: Townes, Randy Newman, Leonard Cohen, Richard Thompson, Gene Clark
  11:37am
kat330:

@KP: Not Newman. He's always got "I Love L.A." and "You've Got a Friend in Me" to offset anything too cynical.

dale:

remember the mad tv randy newman/rob zombie duets?
  11:39am

And add Nick Cave to that list.

@KP: I think Thompson wins. "The End of the Rainbow" is the bleakest song ever written.

Nick Cave has gloom cornered.
  11:44am
kat330:

@Joe & KP: But then Thompson did that marvelous cover of Spears' "Oops, I Did It Again."

Speaking of gloom... my favorite record of last year was Farthest South's Neurim, featuring listener Yair. Not a cheerful record, even though I don't understand a word of it. Just a great one

Tom's voice never sounded so silken -- or hasn't since.
