Favoriting December 2, 2014: Giving (Me A Headache) Tuesday
Today is Giving Tuesday. Did you know that? Good. I didn't either. We can be forgiven for not being aware of Giving Tuesday because it's a "tradition" that began two years ago. I heard about it for the first time yesterday. The idea is a noble one: we have a day when we give thanks, a day when we give gifts and now a day - the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving - when we give to charity. So cough it up, suckers!

I know most of you are already giving money to WFMU. But I I'd like to know what other causes get your philanthropic juices flowing. Do you drop some coins into the Salvation Army bucket? Or volunteer your time with a local food bank? Do any other organizations (besides WFMU) get your time or money? Or both?

From philanthropic to misanthropic: I work in Christmas Central (you might know it as "Rockefeller Center") and this time of the year is a misery for me. so I'd also like your coping strategies for dealing with the onslaught of crowds of Christmas crap sightseers, the horrible holiday music, the snow, the traffic, the shopping: the holiday headache that lasts the entire month of December. I know, I know: I sound all "Bah, humbug!" - I'm not. I like the trappings of the holiday as much as the next person. I just have problems with Supernatural Jesus and all the horror committed in His name. Amen.

Call 201-209-WFMU and let's give 'til it hurts!

I give money to www.peaceactionwest.org , Chris, in addition to WFMU. But I'm really interested in getting my son and I actually volunteering our time somewhere. Preferrably peace or social justice related. Suggestions?

Hello peoples. Hi Chris. I haven't heard of Giving Tuesday either. The Met has been emailing me asking for money and saying its Giving Tuesday. I thought they made it up.

Oh man the Christmas music is starting to be played in the streets.... It snuck up on me this year. I turned onto Fulton Mall and heard it this morning. It made me shudder..

nice writing in the newsletter chris. your childhood sounds similar to mine, except my father suffered in silence and my mother was the one quick with the backhand.

Cool!

Woah... why are you calling me Sean?!

Mike East:

I give to this station and WNYC. At some point I may add WBAI to that list, but they haven't gotten me yet. My wife ends up donating our money to various organizations that rope her in via social media. We also give to the local church and hospital.

i give to RBARI (Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge). great no kill animal shelter in Bergen County.

oh man....really hard to read the comments with the moving backdrop!

i suggest that people give blood....doesnt take much time, and doesnt take any money at all. plus, if you do apheresis, you get to be hooked up to a machine that takes your blood a bit at a time, centrifuges and extracts what's needed, and returns your blood back to you! cool! (this takes longer). many people need all kinds of "blood products" all the time..

i also give bucks to transportation alternatives (rational transit advocacy)and the aclu, despite their dodgy/ambivalent stance on campaign financing.

George of Troy:

It's pretty common knowledge at this point, but I think it's worth mentioning that by all accounts the Salvation Army is a hateful, discriminatory organization. www.change.org...

Hey Chris, don't forget about the singulaity

If the moving gif background makes your eyes spin, try the trick of ctrl-a (control key along with the lower-case 'a' key). I use that on DJ Stashu's colorful backgrounds. It turns on reverse-image on the letters.

Greg from Bloomfield:

Jeez Louise! I've been psyched to go to another Literary Guild thing but I already have TWO parties that night. Maybe I can borrow somebody's helicopter...

Get off Facebook and spend less time online and you will be happier!

i'm on the fence about the whole god thing, so celebrating jesus bday seems hypocritical on my part. and didn't the church steal this time period form the pagans anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm
Mike East:

@SeanG - I was just telling my wife exactly that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm

right on Mike East!

Not the GIF so much as the light blue text on gray -- yikes, that's hard to read!

in rejoinder(?) to george of troy, re: salvation army and homophobia...

apparently, gay men (or any man who has had sex with another man in the last twelve months) are not allowed to donate blood.
which is an unfortunate, archaic hold-over from the AIDS-scare era, i would think.

but recently there was an editorial abt this issue in the times, so maybe there's a change coming.

SwazeyLane:

I've donated a couple of cars to animal rescue and radio stAtions. An easy way to get rid of an old crate and you do some good. And they handle all the paperwork etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Fuzzy:

Turn off the TV news too, if you would like to be less stressed/depressed. As for FOMO, don't worry about it -- if there's something you really need to know about, you'll hear about it soon enough.

Sally B.:

If you want a volunteer opportunity go to a nearby pantry or soup kitchen. My husband and I do that once a week. It isn't always a feel good thing at the time but we know that it helps people. Good show Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
chris:

Thanks for the suggestion, Sally! I've actually done that in the past, for St Vincent De Paul. Yeah, my son and I should do that.

JakeGould:

Sick of Supernatural Jesus? easy. Pretend you are Jewish. and maybe if we meet up one day I can tell you how sickening that nonsense can be as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
SeanG:

ya gotta make that move to Southern Cali Chris!

a great way to kill f.o.m.o. without drastically changing your lifestyle is to just do an internet free day or weekend every now and then.
