I'm 'American' & white - & it's the same. We're all appalled by what happened to Michael Brown - an unarmed 18 year old - shot @ least six times & probably many more - in a Midwestern suburb. The fact is though, he only represents an endemic & entrenched situation: it is happening constantly.

- ha fred! - you predicted this...We knew the cop would walk.

The comments on the CNN.com story right now are pretty scarily homogenous in their narrowness of view: http://tinyurl.com/kp7ukp7
Good to have soneone like Marty to put things in perspective this morning.

Cops who murder black, brown, and poor people in the name of capitalist white supremacy aren't just innocent; they're commended for a job well done. The white racist system continues.

oh well, i'm sure the commander-in-chief, the leader of the free world, will once again show all the leadership skills he's shown in the last six years, so nothing to worry about really...

- & of course, when he does, he'll receive no opposition or backlash from the Conservative Media, their Corporate backers, the Police & State governments, nor the Republican Congress swept in via a wave of Voter Apathy...

...no wait - that's Voter Protest, I forgot...
Avatar 7:29am

yep, there would have been a wildly different outcome if those crazy "democrats" had swept both houses of congress. after all, that's what's happened in the past...

Hi, @Marty and people, great - and poignant - show today. All that is happening makes me terrified indeed. But I was going to suggest a track for today's show (if you're taking requests, @Marty) from Racionais MC's, Brazil's foremost rap group, which tackles the same question, as most of their songs do. I've translated the lyrics on my blog (sorry for advertising it)

@ausmanx: You're right - what's needed is some Leadership we aren't getting. Sending the Attorney General to Ferguson was good, & Eric Holder saying the problems there are systemic was right - but what difference does it make? Not enuff. It needs to be a National priority.
- Thx also for tipping me to Russell Brand's trip. I've learned about him from an astrology podcast, of all places (episode 'Aquarian Age'): exploringastrology.libsyn.com... - I won't get into that here, but here's the >Direct Link< to hear it should you care:

thanks, RR, just been into remote outback for a week with a mate from UK and while driving we played a game of proposing celebrities for cabinet minister posts when Russell B becomes prime minister... an amusing exercise, i can recommend it!

Avatar 8:09am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

@ausmanx: Of course Marx warned that change does not come from above. He's always worth considering. Does that writer *really* want to lionize Lenin though? I think it's best to look for better results - however small - wherever they may be found. Reform may still be one way - speaking truth to power is surely another. Still another may be going off-grid, as is crowd-sourcing. (FMU is a kind of example of this, in its' little but important way - & that's why we're here.)
- It's clear that economic imbalance, police culture, climate, war & gun violence are all problems that threaten us more & more, & won't be successfully ignored indefinitely. Every problem will take all the ingenuity anyone can bring to it. I don't have answers, & I understand the desire for regime change.

good morn...and, yea. man.

ausmanx:

well, i reckon there are a thousand small ways we can practice civil disobedience, but Hedges point is that really the information people consume is now so controlled by political institutions, corporations and media that the most important thing we can do is communicate to people what's really going on (which is what Marty's doing this morning). it's a long process; Lenin's achievements were profound, as were Mao's, but they were perverted as tends to happen. there'll be many more perversions too, no doubt. how much time do we have left, do you reckon?
Avatar 8:37am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- well - Climate for example means something different to people in Australia then in the U.S. I imagine - but they might catch on even here. Media is indeed the question - & my perspective, you see, is as a U.S. denizen. It has to get to the level of a McDonald's commercial to get thru here - & we know who's broadcasting those.

Strange how this mix is relevant pretty much every time something horrible happens. It's almost this country is also facing the same intractable problems and our betters keep telling us our problems are new and unfathomable.
