Options November 25, 2014: An Attitude Of Gratitude

Ten days ago Bob Geldof and his cohorts in the charity supergroup Band Aid reconvened to record yet another version of Do They Know It's Christmas Time?, the song that topped the charts all over the world in November 1984. Thirty years later, Band Aid 30 (intervening recordings were dubbed Band Aid II and Band Aid 20), was prompted not only by an anniversary but by the devastation of Ebola (The tagline? Buy The Song, Stop The Virus).

You would think with such a noble cause the whole endeavor would be above reproach. Wrong. Last year at Christmas-time, Wyndham Wallace, writing for The Quietus, tore apart the patronizing lyrics of the original. This latest version has seen a range of criticism, from doctors who say it overstates the risk of Ebola transmission to those who think Bob Geldof should be reminded that Africa has some of the world's fastest-growing economies to singer Lily Allen who was invited to perform on the song but feels the proceedings were "A bit smug..." to Adele, who just refused to take part despite a reported one hundred calls from Bob Geldof to a singer who DID take part but feels the "patronizing" lyrics should've been changed. Those are just the tip of the proverbial bitch-berg. Use your favorite browser and search "Band Aid 30 criticism". I'll see you back here in a few days.

Are you back? I'm grateful. In fact, I have an "Attitude of Gratitude" (I stole that from the tag on my tea bag) at this time of year. Thursday is - of course - Thanksgiving and it's been a year since I discussed what's in my "Thank Bank" and what's in yours. Tonight, all those Band Aid songs will serve as your dialing music. Call 201-209-WFMU and let's hear your "Attitude of Gratitude" and your thoughts on charity, supergroups and the unholy alliance of the two. I'll also help you navigate your visit home by modeling the worst members of your family. A little practice never hurt.

Things like Ferguson truly show you who people really are. That this kind of tragedy can happen and the response is just entitled, clueless, passive-aggressive racism.

Saw on web today, 409 people shot and killed by police in US in 2013, compared to 0 in Germany, 3 in UK, 0 in Japan.
That's a mindset.
