Avatar 4:47pm
steve:

as far as addictions go, record collecting is probably one of the more nourishing ones
Avatar 4:49pm
adrian in mpls:

after years and years of selling off the collection, i'm only just now at the point where i can financially feed the record buying habit again. which is exciting! i've missed it.
Avatar 🎸 4:55pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

I sold off the entire LP collection in the '90s and built up a stupidly huge CD collection. Now that CDs are revealed to be the soul-stealers they truly are, have been working to get the LP collection back to its former glory.

.....so trade-credit for the CDs has helped. Despite the crummy trade value these days, even for imports I payed freakish amounts for, back then..
Avatar 4:57pm
the glowing one:

I would gladly buy old CDs for cheap in bulk, they had the best mastering quality plus the CD sound quality.
Avatar 4:58pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
chris:

I remember listening to Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Welcome to the Thunderdome CD on headphones, back when CDs were new, thinking... well, there goes da rekkids... Mainly because my TT was crap, I think.. but yeah, the mastering quality was amazing to me.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I've heard it pronounced like that too Yeti. I saw him in dual with Brotzmann and the Victo guy introduced them by pointing at the vibraphone and saying "Peter does not like this instrument, but he likes the way Jason plays it"
Avatar 5:07pm
the glowing one:

Welcome to the Pleasuredome was a pinnacle 80s production, but mainly thanks to Trevor Horn. the band was pretty much clueless at that time, and afterwards, too. hehe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
chris:

yup, agreed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
Mike East:

I loved CDs, but so many of my were stolen or damaged over the years...I take much better care of the vinyl than the CD's. A single scratch on a CD can render it unlistenable. a similar scratch on a record can be worked around much easier, IMO
Avatar 5:10pm
the glowing one:

well, there's software to rip damaged CDs and even software to repair unprecise rips. not to mention the many perfect "backup copies" floating around on the web encoded with FLAC
  5:11pm
P-90:

@Fabio: "Roman Spring of Mrs.Stone"-- if you haven't sen it, you haven't really missed much.
p.s. Thanks for the Spermwich.
Avatar 5:12pm
the glowing one:

it's pretty much the best medium to preserve the music legacy. there are thousands of copies of a record around the world and even though the medium itself isn't error proof, you can almost always compare your rip with someone elses.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Mike East, I've always theorized that people felt vinyl was more robust simply because they took better care of it. People generally don't leave their records lying around out of the sleeves or in a pile of receipts, scrap paper, and other stuff.
Avatar 5:19pm
the glowing one:

hm, I always thought of my vinyl records of a product with a limited life expectancy. technically it sounds worse after each playback and improper handling. that kind of made the music more important and handling the actual medium almost completely irrelevant.
Avatar 5:20pm
the glowing one:

the best music I bought on vinyl was from the flea market.
Avatar 🎸 5:24pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

For me, the ritual of dealing with vinyl makes the whole experience more significant. The pain of careful handling & flipping sides requires that one pay attention... I find the "set it & forget it" luxury of CDs to be bloodless & devoid of guts. .... which is unfortunate 'cuz it's a convenient medium for home-based noisemakers...
Avatar 🎸 5:25pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

...and ooh, this here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
chris:

Fabio, your show is so droning wonderful today. Cheers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Mike East:

exactly my thought, Andrew...I used to throw CD's around, store them on the old CDR spindles. Plus taking them in the car takes a toll...
Avatar 5:26pm
the glowing one:

sounds like copy and paste.
Avatar 5:26pm
steve:

i gave almost all my cds to fmu a few months ago. ive been doing just vinyl and files for so long, figured i might as well. seeing SW and BT light up confirmed it was the right decision.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Andrew Waterloo:

There is something to be said about shuffle on a huge playlist, or being able to queue up an endless list of CDs while you're doing something in the background. I find with records I am more likely to listen to something several times, especially a particular side of a record.

- man - I got to where I'm trying to store everything on external hardrives - preferably 'lossless' mp4s over 3s
- altho' you FMU types have convinced me Vinyl is kinda the Real Thing (Digital is clearer & programmable, but Analog not dependent on yer Sampling Rate)
- but because Analog wears out every time it's used - I just wanna convert it to Digital to Store & Program & Listen to it on Mac or iPod (*already* retreating into obsolescence)...
...Is a Nico song written by Jackson Browne the middle ground twixt Fabio & Clay - ??
...I get paid in a week btw...

Lothair, you have it backwards. FMU DJs only accept Payola™. you have to SEND them the songs you like and put some extra cash into the record sleeve. all for the good cause, of course. then "maybe" they'll play them.
