Is that from the T.A.M.I. Show?
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:45am Doug Schulkind:

Beats me Gary, but if it is, I should've waited to use the gif on October 28, which will be the 50th anniversary of the T.A.M.I. Show.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:47am Gary:

Oh, wow, that's right! I saw the film for the first time about five years ago and was (as you'd imagine) totally blown away
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 8:47am duke:

I caught the Stanley Bros. on the stream a few minutes ago. I'm trying to imagine Ralph and Carter dancing like JB or JB and the Famous Flames doing Stanley Bros. harmonies. We need more crossover.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:47am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of being blown away:
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:49am Doug Schulkind:

I'll be airing a "soul singers go country" set during today's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 8:49am duke:

JB's T.A.M.I show performance is on youtube
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 8:51am duke:

@Doug Wonderful!
There was a lot of crossover between R&B and country back in the day.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:53am Gary:

Hopping into the shower ... will be quick, but don't unleash any Xtreme Awesomeness w/out me!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:53am glenn:

will gary be singing?
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

Sadly, the crossover tends to cross over mostly from marginalized to mainstream.

Hand me the loofah and move the hell over!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 8:54am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 8:59am Holly in NC:

Morining! Pretty sure that is the T.A.M.I. show. Whever I watch I feel SO sorry for the Stones having to come on afterwards...
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:00am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Listener James from Westw00t!

Greetings, Holly in NC!

Fingers x'd, annie. Good morning pilar wherever you are!
  Fri. 9/26/14 9:03am Mr C:

You engage the audience before the show?? Man..James Brown used to come out and play organ as the band warmed up and the crowd filed in. An early Doug influence.
  Fri. 9/26/14 9:04am Mr C:

And you both give the drummer some...incredible!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

My cape is already off, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 9:10am ausmanx:

back from grim London, evening all.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

Hey ausmanx, how's it hanging?!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:13am Gary:

Possums are beyond good & evil!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

PETA approved that message, Gary.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

Alan Lomax was only 23 at the time he recorded this interviews with Jelly Roll Morton. I was still wearing short pants at 23.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

Next up: Jelly Roll plays something from Verdi's "Il Trovatore."
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:22am duke:

Shouldn't that song have been Opossum Was an Evil Thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 9:22am ausmanx:

stripping off the cape and jumping into the shower with Gary... things have changed since i've been gone! met up with Evan Parker in London, which was nice. his was the only gig i managed though.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:22am Gary:

One of my poet friends worked at ACE for a while in the 90s or early 00s and I got to go in to the archive once, for a brief, thrill-packed 30-40 minutes or so.
  Fri. 9/26/14 9:23am Mr C:

This is fascinating..."..some inferior pianist.."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 9:24am listener james from westwood:

Priceless archive, this. How poor we'd have been had Lomax not gone out and done his thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:25am Alex In Illinois:

Jelly Roll mentioned the horse tracks in the New Orleans area. Boozoo Chavis earned most of his living as a jockey and as a horse trainer for some of the more rural Louisiana race tracks.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

I see where you fall on the possum/opossum divide.
  Fri. 9/26/14 9:26am Lore:

There is an interesting article with some background on Henry Truvillion available on jstor, for anyone who may wish to check it:
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Alex in Illinois and Lore, I oughta put you two on retainer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:28am Alex In Illinois:

Some of my favorite fiddle tunes are "Possum up a Gum Stump" and "'Possum up a 'Simmon Tree"
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:31am duke:

Just read that Wingy Carpenter was a one-armed trumpet player
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:31am Gary:

When Lomax died, Dave Marsh wrote the most mean-spirited obit I've ever read, for CounterPunch. When I wrote to them with several fact-checking things that Marsh had gotten wrong (attributed to Alan things his father'd done, for instance), the CounterPunch editor called me an asshole. Marsh was upset, but a bit more of a gentleman about it. (He at least admitted he'd gotten a few things -- more than a few things, actually -- wrong. Though he still maintained that Lomax was an evil human being.
  Fri. 9/26/14 9:40am Mr C:

King Records Syd Nathan was fond of mixing and matching his country and R&B copyrights, sometimes to funny and bizarre effect: Stanley Brothers doing Hank Ballard's "Finger Poppin Time".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:40am Alex In Illinois:

I am reluctant to judge musicians for being assholes when they are off stage, but not those in the music journalism industry when they are doing their job.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

And Hank Ballard doing "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

Dear, dear Timi. Her voice sounds to be at about seven packs a days here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 9:50am listener james from westwood:

Doug, I don't know if you've heard this show, but your 2014 premium got 2 tracks' worth of love on this new (to me at least) FMU program, Paid by the Tear, which filled in earlier this week. Lotsa lovely C&W and American folk and two--2--cuts w/ talking guitar:
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:50am Alex In Illinois:

Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Pennsylvania was named for Dan Penn as far as I can tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 9:58am Uncle Michael:

A lot of J.J. Cale seems to come from this side of Dan Penn.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Calesylvania? I don't think so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 10:02am listener james from westwood:

@UM: Samantha, Jeff Conklin (sp?), Micah, and a show under the moniker Radio BLT. Also this brandy-new program (I believe the Paid by the Tear DJ's name is Sasha?). And there's another new-ish one, Rolling Motion, who just did their 2nd fill-in, that I have to check out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:03am Uncle Michael:

I'll seek them out. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 10:04am listener james from westwood:

Wouldn't have spotted Sasha had I not hit the Recent Archives page, so once again kudos to Kenzo.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:07am Doug Schulkind:

Jeff Conklin had done a show on East Village Radio. He may be doing some fill-ins on the Drummer Stream, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:10am northguineahills:

I don't believe this is on his other releases.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:12am Uncle Michael:

Phil Ochs and 60s WBAI - I wasn't there, but I can imagine the scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:16am Uncle Michael:

Everything I know about WBAI is from either the Bob Fass documentary or from present day mishigas from my friends that are involved with Pacifica.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

I have a number of connections to late-golden age WBAI. I grew up listening to WPFW, the Pacifica station in Washington DC. A very different vibe, but an amazing one. I owe my life in radio to the inspiration I got from WPFW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:20am Webhamster Henry:

The late Steve Post wrote a book called "Playing in the FM Band" about 60s-70s WBAI, which is very funny. And speaking of late WBAI DJs, my friend Peter Schmideg died suddenly last Saturday, he had a show called Oblique Strategies which I was on a few times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:20am Uncle Michael:

I still hear very good things (it's not dysfuctional) about WPFW from both listeners in the DC area and people steeped in the Pacifica wars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:21am Uncle Michael:

That's a shame, Harry. Condolences.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:21am βrian:

Cerulean skies over the isthmus today. Bonjour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:22am northguineahills:

damn, Henry.... that sucks.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Oh my, I didn't know Peter died.

Hallloooooo, βrian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:23am Webhamster Henry:

In the 80s , late WFMU DJ Citizen Kafka was on WBAI, and also ran the revived Free Music Store live music shows, which brought back a bit of the 60s/70s WBAI feel. You can get a good idea of Kafka from the Citizen Kafka/Wretched Refuse String Band shows in Irene's archives.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:24am ndbob:

I loved Kafka on Secret Museum of the Air - once had a long, entertaining phone conversation with him
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

For a while, Kafka and Pat Conte brought Secret Museum to WFMU. The show was great great great, but Kafka was a bit too embittered at that point to really enjoy himself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Fri. 9/26/14 10:28am listener james from westwood:

Sad to hear it, Henry. My condolences.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Webhamster Henry
Wasn't it Peter who, for a while, did a show on WBAI reviewing porn videos?
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:30am glenn:

do you mean peter schmidt? the guy who created the oblique strategies cards with eno?
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, it was Peter Schmidt
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:34am Gary:

Super Love the Secret Museum. Didn't know there was a Kafka involved ... will hold the obvious jokes.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:41am Webhamster Henry:

Sunny Ochs: You can listen to Folk Music and Other Stuff every Friday from 2:04 pm - 4:00 pm - you'd have to cut into Hinky Dinky a little -
at (which is a tiny upstate community radio station)
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Was my talkover music too loud? Did you miss every last pithy word I uttered? Should I start over from the top?
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

I'm still trying to get the hang of this radio stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:44am Webhamster Henry:

No, the WBAI that porn reviewer was Max Schmid. Peter Schmidt was a different guy who died in 1980.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 10:45am Santos L Halper:

This a new Trane release? Pharaoh?
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:45am βrian:

Not too loud, Doug.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

YES, Max Schmid. Funny how my mind conflated Peter Schmideg/Peter Schmidt/Max Schmid. I am getting too old for this.

@Santos L. Halper
Yes! And yes!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

And by "funny" I mean horrifying.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Put yer dang headphones on, people!

Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

This Coltrane concert got panned. In the Temple student newspaper, the person who OK'd the funding apologized for bringing in the show, which lost money.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Yeah, it just ends like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:04am Santos L Halper:

Good on the hep cats at Temple who got that one over on the moneymen!
  Fri. 9/26/14 11:04am jeff g.:

As I understand it, the Coltrane family wasn't always so excited to have the Temple recording see the light of day, owing to the vocalizations.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hello Rob in SAV! I missed you up there [am making upward pointing motion].
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:06am bobdc:

"The Arrival of Victor Feldman" has such an excellent cover:

Also, people of a certain age will be pleased to know that Feldman does the electric piano solo on Steely Dan's "Black Cow."
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

@jeff g
The Coltrane family has impeded numerous vital projects. They (Alice) was no on board with the Tell Me How Long Trane's Been Gone for a long time before it finally got made/aired. (And Alice wasn't too keen on me re-broadcasting it, etiher. The producer, Steve Rowland, finally convinced the family that it was worth it.)
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

Thank you for the excellent intelligence, bobdc!

Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

Actually, you just told me how you are. Dumb question.
  Fri. 9/26/14 11:46am eareie:

How the heck are YOU, Doug? Sounding excellent as ever.

Alex, yes, the premise was that it was a multi-headliner benefit concert. Rick Nelson was that week's host, and he was in the bit too. It's the sketch in which they introduced Gilda Radner's Patti Smith spoof, Candi Slyce. Man, Marley, Nelson, Radner -- what a sad thing it would be to watch that bit now.

Maybe Jeff G will lay some more Trane on us Monday! If I can wait that long...though its kinda pricey for 2cds

@Uncle Michael: Thanks for the info about the W3. I need to get one or two transmitters and 3 or 4 receivers. Whenever I plug my smartphone into the Stereo in one room, and the PC into one in the other room, the streams are usually out-of-sync. This W3 thingy might be the solution.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

James Booker is all of 15 here.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Santos L Halper
Looky here:
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:51am Uncle Michael:

I think that nearly three hours in, James Brown is gritting his teeth harder than he appeared to be at the top of the show.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

Grit and bear it, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:56am ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

Remember who had the big hit with this number? Don't take the Fifth on your answer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:56am Jeff Golick:

Not sure who else to tell, so I hope you won't mind if I name-drop here: there's a kid over at my apt now who's getting picked up by the next dad on his playdate calendar, and it's Mike D.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:57am Parq:

Who had the hit with "Light Songs"? Btw, Doug, is that a typo? Coz they're saying "Light Sings".
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

How Beastly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:57am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:58am Uncle Michael:

Jeff, ask him to be on your show.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

No, I had a brain fart, Parq. Light Sings is correct.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Fri. 9/26/14 11:58am Parq:

Hello Doug, holidaying in the country to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Just bought Lili a new wedding ring as the original has split for the second time. I have not split, still here. Take care my friend.
Avatar Fri. 9/26/14 12:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Much blessings to you, Brian and Lili!
