You will summon him back from beyond with this dangerous ritual and he will be wrathful. |

Phillip in Brooklyn:
Yes please more negativeland! Kurt you could do a whole show over negativeland that would be great. I love negativeland
![]() |
![]() I consider this whole U2 debacle further proof that I've been extremely wise to steer clear of Apple products. Well, wise and dirt poor. |
![]() |
![]() I better check my iPhone. And my iTunes on home PC. I don't want that shite music on my devices. |
![]() |
![]() I found for years that, every time there was an update to iTunes, it eliminated a feature that I really liked. As a result, I haven't updated iTunes in, like, five years. The U2 thing is just one more reason not to. |
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 3:21pm
YETI BOB:
Great show Kurt! We are drinking tea and listening to Tea Culture. |
![]() |
![]() I'm afraid of installing Itunes because I'm sure it will decide to rearrange my music collection, and it would ask me if I want to do that because someone decided that wasn't the crisp way to do it. |
![]() |
![]() That said, I'll readily admit that Apple products are shoddier and require more passivity from the user than was the case when I started with them in '08. But I still remember how much I hated Microsoft, and I'm too old to learn the one with the penguin, so ... |
![]() |
![]() Yeah, itunes is pretty useless to me. The only time I go near it is when my wife needs me to figure out how to get something from the computer onto her phone, then it usually takes me 45 minutes to figure out. I try to stay away from it at all costs. |
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 3:23pm
YETI BOB:
JUST SAY NO TO APPLE (you can do it!) |
![]() |
![]() I just don't want to end up in one of their human cent-i-pad things. |
Fri. 9/12/14 3:27pm
bombay rickey:
when did U2 get this unbelievable chick singer?
![]() |
![]() Just went to check out my account balance. Turns out I won a tenner in the lottery. Nice! Not as nice as the 7 million I could've won, but I'll take it. |
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 3:34pm
still b/p:
You'll buy a Friday feast for yourself? |
![]() |
![]() Congrats, Caryn. You're buying. Chewing gum for the house! |
![]() |
![]() I don't have iTunes on my iPhone. I have no desire to listen to music off my phone, unless it's WFMU. |
![]() |
![]() Czech mate, Kurt! |
![]() |
![]() @sb/p & Parq: got a shopping list for tomorrow: plums, grapes, chicken and lettuce. That's about 8.50. Might blow the budget if I decide to get some sundries I need, like bread. |
![]() |
![]() I've only ever listened to WFMU archives on my phone. |
![]() The great thing about this U2 iPhone debacle is it will give them a nice number to look at if they wanted to know just how disliked they are. They gave their album to everyone and everyone threw it in the trash. Might deflate their ego a bit... probably not.
![]() |
![]() What's worse is listening to Apple fanboys go on about how Apple could save 'the album' with this type of strategy. |
![]() |
![]() Float On is just the greatest |
![]() |
![]() Speaking of dead famous people, I like to think that the "From Russia With Love" bit Kurt played earlier was a subtle RIP to Richard Kiel. |
![]() |
![]() @SFI - supposedly Apple ponied up $10 million dollars for the U2 album/launch thingy, so if anything, I'd see their egos getting bigger from getting all that cash. BTW, has anyone on here listened to their Joey Ramone 'tribute'? I'm too scared to do it. |
![]() |
![]() @PKNY: U2 got 30 million total for the album and for Apple using the album tracks in future ads, so I think they're fine financially. But as for the vast numbers of iTunes subscribers who are publicly going, "I don't want this trash on my phone!" or worse "Who is U2?"... that might be a blow to their egos. Probably not, though. Not going to penetrate their bubble. |
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:05pm
still b/p:
Is it ego and addiction to being BIG? They're certainly not unique in it, and I guess we can't really know unless we're in the same position, and in the same business machine, but I wonder why after all the massive worldwide success they already got to enjoy across a good number of years, the U2 bandmembers still feel that the biggest-stick kind of corporate promotion and still being OH, SO VERY BIG are worthy pursuits and driving needs. Speaking of ego and addiction....Rob Ford announced today he won't run for reelection as mayor, but will run for a council seat while his brother runs for mayor. |
![]() |
![]() I'm sure U2 will just take the Rob Ford approach and brush off any criticism as unfair. |
![]() |
![]() In a perfect world, an acapella version of "Reign in Blood" would come with every smartphone. |
![]() |
![]() This Dokaka is incredibly awesome |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:08pm
bombay rickey:
why can't dokaka magically appear on my phone?
![]() |
![]() This thread prompted me to take a little break and go over to Google news (speaking of monoliths) and see what kind of press this is getting. So far, this is my favorite snippet: “We were paid [by Apple],” Bono told TIME yesterday. “I don’t believe in free music. Music is a sacrament.” Oh, well then ... |
![]() |
![]() According to this page, Apple might be handing $100 mil over to U2 --> www.billboard.com... |
![]() |
![]() @bombay rickey: maybe they do, but only when you're asleep. And they magically disappear when you wake up. They're impish that way. |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:10pm
bombay rickey:
@caryn: hmm, maybe that's why my dreams sound like this :) dokaka can use at least a few million...
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:15pm
still b/p:
In comments just yesterday there was discussion about "redundant dollars," a term suited perfectly to this conversation. |
![]() |
![]() The $100 mil figure is getting lots of press, from what I just saw. And on a different but quite related note, here's a lament from Wired on Apple's abandoning (we all knew this was coming) the old-school iPod. I still have mine, and will continue to use it for as long as I can. When that's over, I will probably just stop using iTunes altogether. www.wired.com... |
![]() |
![]() omigosh, been jumping around too much to say hello. hello everyone! thanks for tuning in! |
![]() |
![]() music is sacred...good one, bono. |
![]() |
![]() Common -- music is sacred AND THAT'S WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO PAY FOR IT! |
![]() |
![]() Bono always wants to be #1. He cannot stand to be #2. |
![]() |
![]() gawd, i love vibes |
![]() |
![]() @parq: exaclty. don't they have enough money? i work with a guy who knows his daughter. i'm gonna see what he thinks. |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:26pm
Ray:
Brubaker from the band Circle of Shit also died this week. A hardcore Philly legend. #RIP
![]() "Music is sacred therefore it should not be free" is like the most fucked up concept i've ever heard. That mentality wants to go back to the dawn of humanity and charge people for beating on a log.
![]() |
![]() Dokaka's version of Ramblin' Man is still one of the best things I've ever heard. |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:35pm
Ray:
Just listened to The Miracle (of Joey Ramone) in the new U2 and its HORRIBLE. A mix between Green Day n Coldplay. Terrible. Joey has got to be pissed. I would be.
![]() |
![]() Oh yah, Randy Weston :) |
![]() |
![]() i asked my coworker what he thought about the u2 thing. not much. then he told me that there's a world news special on sting tonight. it seems that he won't be giving money to his children because he wants them to know the beauty of hard work. world news. good lord people! |
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 4:39pm
still b/p:
I just looked to see if we could fairly say, "Well, at least he gives a great deal of money and effort to humanitarian causes." But much of the info on Bono in that regard...it don't smell so good. |
![]() |
![]() I think the beauty of having tons of money is people able to elevate your family a bit. |
![]() |
![]() his kids could pay to pick his olives, tho. www.telegraph.co.uk... |
![]() |
![]() Still love the line about Sting being 4/5th scented candle. |

1978 or '9, the Whisky, Sunset Blvd. The Police on stage. I kept checking my wristwatch wondering when it all would end. And I didn't even own a wristwatch.
![]() |
![]() Common, I know that may seem ludicrous to you, but if you've seen as many snotty, spoiled-ass rich kids as I (resident of lower midtown Manhattan) have seen in the past year or two, then maybe Sting's thinking would seem a little less looney. |
![]() |
![]() I KNEW NIHILIST SPASM BAND WAS COMING NEXT I KNEW IT |
![]() |
![]() maybe, parq. in any even...beeeeeersies!!! |

![]() |
![]() i haven't seem them since hugh died. do they have another bassist now? |
Fri. 9/12/14 5:06pm
Andrew Waterloo:
yes, they do introduce him as playing Hugh's bass.

![]() Yikes, just recovered from the Blue Screen of Death. All's well, now. |

@Parq: @4:56 : You don't think there are plenty of "trust fund brats" right around these here parts? I can smell their privileged asses a mile away, even if their heads are in the right place with FMU.

![]() Ken, sad to say, Danes don't live very long. Dog hearts just can't handle bodies that size. |
![]() |
![]() Hey folks. |
![]() |

![]() |
![]() ...I think U2 were 'fine financially' well before this ...$30 million ?!...one album...nothing like the signing bonuses Mariah Carey got or anything, but - think of what $30mil would mean to any of us & most of the Artists who get played here; yerknow - that's what is it - 6, 10 Marathons ??...& people give blood for those...I guess Bono shoulda put up a ticket booth when U2 stole TheBeatles on their roof thing & played Live in a street for a movie idea; reminded of Bill Graham @ Woodstock saying hadda put up booths & collect tickets - & WavyGravy pulling him aside & telling him: you wanna a GoodMovie - or a BadMovie - ?? |
![]() |
![]() sad he and similar dogs die so young... so he was only 5ish? |
![]() |
![]() ...yerknow - if playing Free is so Wrong... |
![]() |
![]() $30 million... hah. Meanwhile some of us who dared to produce 500 copies of an LP are having quite a trip just getting them anywhere. And I daresay the music involved in those tiny, passionate, honest projects is likely worlds beyond whatever those rich bastards have "produced." |
![]() |
![]() there's a pretty good takedown of these U2 shenanigans over at thequietus.com, including detailing their tax evasion, their faux-social consciousness, etc. |
![]() |
![]() ...& to think U2 represented freshness & Spirituality to many when they *were* hungry early on - those 1st few albums...watched a video of R.E.M. doing the Arena-sized thang, & myself impressed how well they kept it relevant, w/ the cheap surrealistic Alt vibe; how one hits the Top40 & Arenas & keeps it I guess is the dilemma. Not everyone is TheBeatles, I guess ; & they were too early to develop the Arena thing @ that pioneering stage - quit Beatlemania to Record... |
![]() |
Fri. 9/12/14 5:46pm
YETI BOB:
This track is not on the "801 Live" record I have! |
![]() |
![]() ...as a Wh♂ worshipper, always suspected U2 were (un)consciously aping their steps - including ones no one should; they're so much like all the Huge Classic bands that dragged out into doldrums that drove everyone mad... ...mine either YetiB - later edition bonus CD track ? |
Fri. 9/12/14 5:49pm
Dean:
Is it mean to say I'm loving the U2-hating?
![]() |
![]() ha - there's been plenty of it today! well deserved, i'd say. |
![]() |
![]() ...they've long been *thee* Alt band that got Hugest: it's nothing new... |
![]() |
![]() @Dean - it's not mean. it's sensible. |
Fri. 9/12/14 5:55pm
Dean:
Whew. Let me just share that one of my almost internationally acclaimed bands played on the very same stage of a seedy club, The Woodstock in Buena Park, CA, where U2 made their OC debut.
Fri. 9/12/14 5:58pm
bombay rickey:
the bigger a band is, the easier/more fun it is to make fun of them, no? @Kurt, thanks for your awesome show, great to see you this past monday!
![]() |
![]() Hey thanks, Kurt! |
Fri. 9/12/14 5:59pm

You're right, bombay. Nobody makes fun of my almost internationally acclaimed band, alas.
