I consider this whole U2 debacle further proof that I've been extremely wise to steer clear of Apple products. Well, wise and dirt poor.
Avatar 3:16pm
Carmichael:

I better check my iPhone. And my iTunes on home PC. I don't want that shite music on my devices.
Avatar 3:20pm
Parq:

I found for years that, every time there was an update to iTunes, it eliminated a feature that I really liked. As a result, I haven't updated iTunes in, like, five years. The U2 thing is just one more reason not to.

YETI BOB:

I'm afraid of installing Itunes because I'm sure it will decide to rearrange my music collection, and it would ask me if I want to do that because someone decided that wasn't the crisp way to do it.
Avatar 3:22pm
Parq:

That said, I'll readily admit that Apple products are shoddier and require more passivity from the user than was the case when I started with them in '08. But I still remember how much I hated Microsoft, and I'm too old to learn the one with the penguin, so ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm
Mike East:

Yeah, itunes is pretty useless to me. The only time I go near it is when my wife needs me to figure out how to get something from the computer onto her phone, then it usually takes me 45 minutes to figure out. I try to stay away from it at all costs.

I've only ever listened to WFMU archives on my phone.
  Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
S from I:

The great thing about this U2 iPhone debacle is it will give them a nice number to look at if they wanted to know just how disliked they are. They gave their album to everyone and everyone threw it in the trash. Might deflate their ego a bit... probably not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Andrew Waterloo:

What's worse is listening to Apple fanboys go on about how Apple could save 'the album' with this type of strategy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm

Speaking of dead famous people, I like to think that the "From Russia With Love" bit Kurt played earlier was a subtle RIP to Richard Kiel.
Avatar 4:01pm
PKNY:

@SFI - supposedly Apple ponied up $10 million dollars for the U2 album/launch thingy, so if anything, I'd see their egos getting bigger from getting all that cash.

BTW, has anyone on here listened to their Joey Ramone 'tribute'? I'm too scared to do it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05pm
Caryn:

@PKNY: U2 got 30 million total for the album and for Apple using the album tracks in future ads, so I think they're fine financially. But as for the vast numbers of iTunes subscribers who are publicly going, "I don't want this trash on my phone!" or worse "Who is U2?"... that might be a blow to their egos. Probably not, though. Not going to penetrate their bubble.
Avatar 4:05pm
still b/p:

Is it ego and addiction to being BIG? They're certainly not unique in it, and I guess we can't really know unless we're in the same position, and in the same business machine, but I wonder why after all the massive worldwide success they already got to enjoy across a good number of years, the U2 bandmembers still feel that the biggest-stick kind of corporate promotion and still being OH, SO VERY BIG are worthy pursuits and driving needs.

Speaking of ego and addiction....Rob Ford announced today he won't run for reelection as mayor, but will run for a council seat while his brother runs for mayor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I'm sure U2 will just take the Rob Ford approach and brush off any criticism as unfair.

Avatar 4:08pm

This thread prompted me to take a little break and go over to Google news (speaking of monoliths) and see what kind of press this is getting. So far, this is my favorite snippet:

“We were paid [by Apple],” Bono told TIME yesterday. “I don’t believe in free music. Music is a sacrament.”

Oh, well then ...
Avatar 4:08pm
PKNY:

According to this page, Apple might be handing $100 mil over to U2 --> www.billboard.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
Caryn:

@bombay rickey: maybe they do, but only when you're asleep. And they magically disappear when you wake up. They're impish that way.
  4:10pm
bombay rickey:

@caryn: hmm, maybe that's why my dreams sound like this :)
dokaka can use at least a few million...
Avatar 4:15pm
still b/p:

In comments just yesterday there was discussion about "redundant dollars," a term suited perfectly to this conversation.
Avatar 4:16pm
Parq:

The $100 mil figure is getting lots of press, from what I just saw. And on a different but quite related note, here's a lament from Wired on Apple's abandoning (we all knew this was coming) the old-school iPod. I still have mine, and will continue to use it for as long as I can. When that's over, I will probably just stop using iTunes altogether.

  Swag For Life Member 4:32pm

"Music is sacred therefore it should not be free" is like the most fucked up concept i've ever heard. That mentality wants to go back to the dawn of humanity and charge people for beating on a log.

...$30 million ?!...one album...nothing like the signing bonuses Mariah Carey got or anything, but - think of what $30mil would mean to any of us & most of the Artists who get played here; yerknow - that's what is it - 6, 10 Marathons ??...& people give blood for those...I guess Bono shoulda put up a ticket booth when U2 stole TheBeatles on their roof thing & played Live in a street for a movie idea; reminded of Bill Graham @ Woodstock saying hadda put up booths & collect tickets - & WavyGravy pulling him aside & telling him: you wanna a GoodMovie - or a BadMovie - ??

...& to think U2 represented freshness & Spirituality to many when they *were* hungry early on - those 1st few albums...watched a video of R.E.M. doing the Arena-sized thang, & myself impressed how well they kept it relevant, w/ the cheap surrealistic Alt vibe; how one hits the Top40 & Arenas & keeps it I guess is the dilemma. Not everyone is TheBeatles, I guess ; & they were too early to develop the Arena thing @ that pioneering stage - quit Beatlemania to Record...
