Hiya, Duane. A little late. Nowhere I'd rather be on Wednesday afternoon than in my usual seat on this train. I'll have a whole big bottle of funky, in your biggest glass, and another one back.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:29pm Cecile:

I just heard the new Thicke album sold 540 copies in the UK and like 25,000 here. Anyone here it? Is it like a crappy stoner "Here My Dear?"

Hey Duane/iacs! I played the Black Orpheus soundtrack at home this weekend and Mr. CP couldn''t handle it! It's one of my favorites tho.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:46pm Cheri Pi:

Granted, he was trying to work and I had it blaring right in his face.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:46pm Cecile:

My husband thinks that and the movie are the noisiest thing on earth, but I love it too.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 12:46pm Jshatan:

"Couldn't handle" Black Orpheus? Too much pleasure for him?
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:47pm Cecile:

it's the drums, the drums, the drums...
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:49pm Cheri Pi:

yeah, he thought the drums were obnoxious but they don't bother me at all.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:49pm Cecile:

me either.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:51pm Cecile:

I liked that the cartoon movies Rio used Brazilian performers and music, but I wanted a deranged kind of cartoon Black Orpheus soundtrack.

Now I'm hungry...
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 12:57pm still b/p:

As welcome as the cover was, Billy's prevalent slidey lags/delays behind the Stormy beat gave the ol' musical brain a noogie, because it's been soooo hard-wired to the original treatment.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 12:58pm Cecile:

"Write to Midday Love c/o WFMU..."
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:01pm still b/p:

Tried to explain "Release the Kraken!" to someone unfamiliar with it the other day. which, of course, soundly deflated the fun of throwing/applying it in the first place.
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:02pm Fergus:

Much thanks and love to the duane. this helps me through doing dishes for toddlers every wednesday.
Wed. 7/9/14 1:06pm Eric the Half a Bee:

Duane, thanks for the Billy Eckstine. I am criminally unfamiliar with his work and life. Googled and read NPR and Time tributes to him this week. Bird, Diz, Miles, and Blakey in his orchestra, and the amazing singing career after? Wow!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:08pm Duane:

Thanks Fergus & Eric! Yeah..Eckstine was a little known Giant of the industry..no Eckstine, No Marvin, Al, Stevie, Ray,Johnny, etc!
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:08pm Cecile:

I never knew of this Johnny Mathis and Chic record!
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:08pm 23 Wolves:

Man, this show has been fantastick, thanks for playing such cool music!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:10pm Droll:

This Chic/Mathis album was never released -- I had no idea there were remixes of it! This album not being released is a tragedy.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:10pm Cecile:

this would have been a huge hit. Too bad it didn't come out when it should have.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:10pm Cecile:

They are the only producers that could make Johnny Mathis sound good uptempo.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:11pm still b/p:

Whose wardrobe would they agree to adopt as a team for a live gig, everyone Johnny or everyone Chic?
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:12pm Cecile:

I think that there would be a lot of overlap. hahahha
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:12pm Duane:

still b/p: I think Johnny would've looked suave in A Chic suit
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:15pm Droll:

Cecile, Funny you should say that, because the record label refused to release it because they were sure it would have flopped and worse, alienated Johnny's audience. What a classy act that would have been...
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:15pm Jshatan:

They didn't release that?? I thoroughly enjoyed it and usually can't stand Mathis. No wonder the music biz is failing.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:17pm robyn:

the eckstine tribute was beautiful indeed. i think "stormy" might be one of my favorite songs, period. so many great versions.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:19pm Cecile:

this is alos a great track.

I adore JJohnny. That's too bad Droll. I'm glad there were record companies that supported Liza and Dusty working with with the Pet Shop Boys and Ronnie Spector from working with Joey Ramone. And Tony Bennett having a comeback. This record needs to come out now while Nile and Johnny are still on the planet.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:20pm Cecile:

Who wouldn't love a classy lost Chic album with Johnny's vocals? I don't want to know them.
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:21pm Domenica:

Thanks for all of the disco! Perfect for this warm bus ride in Seattle.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:24pm Duane:

Domenica: You're welcome!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:24pm Droll:

My favorite Nile quote about CHIC: We thought we were mixing KISS and Roxy Music into a black band, and that was CHIC.
I have no idea what they were thinking... I can't find the picture online, but there's a pic of Nard and Niles with Gene and Paul backstage at a KISS concert. Everyone looks like they just met their hero.
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:27pm Eli:

FIRE
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:28pm SeanG:

oh shit
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:29pm Jshatan:

@Droll - how true. But yet another opportunity to HIGHLY recommend everyone read Nile Rodger's memoir, if you haven't already.
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:29pm Eli:

MORE FIRE
  Wed. 7/9/14 1:37pm Eli:

It just don't stop.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:40pm Greg from Bloomfield:

AMAZING set. Keeping my sleepy synapses firing at work.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:44pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Two Moultons in one day!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:47pm robyn:

maybe I should be embarrassed but I didn't realize Tom Moulton was still alive! I wonder what he listens to these days.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:48pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

I think he still does an occasional mix?
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 1:53pm Cecile:

robyn, he remixed Kings Go Forth, a soul band from Milwaukee a few years back

Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 1:59pm robyn:

thanks guys. i'lll have to check out kings go forth. that lecture looks great...i was just thinking that man must be put in front of a camera, stat.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:01pm V Priceless:

Hey Duane - you know anything about Mozez supporting Nightmares on Wax in NYC tonite?
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:03pm Duane:

V Priceless: Mozez? I think he was the vocalist in Zero 7..along with Sia Furler, funny enough! Haven't heard much since
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:06pm Cecile:

Moulton is also one of the go-to talking heads on Unsung for dance artists.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:09pm V Priceless:

@ Duane - yeah..that's right...his first solo record ("So Still") is brilliant - he's supposed to be playing Irving Plaza tonite - but only info is that Nightmares gig there has moved to another venue - with no mention of Mozez in support - weirdness. Still trying to sort it out here. Oh well! Check out "So Still" if you can - superb.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:09pm Golde:

Holllllla!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:11pm robyn:

i've got some homework to do! fun hw, though.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:11pm Cecile:

thanks for the tip, VPrice.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:12pm bobdoesthings:

late lunch time, thanks for the tunes duane, adios
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:14pm fred:

Sharing the fun: I took an epic spill outdoors slipping on leaves. I'm OK, but because I walk real fast, it was a ridiculous sight. Seeing how my watch's metal wristband was broken in my fall, I'm amazed my bones held up. But they did
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:14pm Cecile:

wow I like this version so much better than the hit version.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:14pm ᏠЄႶႶỊѺµЄ:

I thought this Fleetwood Mac song was Kermit the Frog at first. Shows where my brain is at.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:14pm Cecile:

owwww fred, I've had some of those. no fun.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:15pm Cecile:

It's still not one of my faves, though.
hahahahah Jennique.
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:15pm still b/p:

This version a little more...human, eh?
  Wed. 7/9/14 2:16pm P-90:

This does beat the big airplay version, easily
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:16pm Cecile:

yeah, not as shiny.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:16pm Cecile:

Richie Havens needs to come back from the grave to make this song good.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:17pm Cecile:

YOU'RE ALL I NEED
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:17pm Cecile:

sorry.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:17pm V Priceless:

Hey Cecile! Check out "So Still" - fine record - kinda groove/chill/soul/psychedelic/pop, etc. - plus Mozez has real smooth pipes, IMO.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:17pm fred:

I still have to break a bone, let's drink to that (though I don't have any liquor around)
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:19pm Cecile:

IME, if you break a bone clean, it's better than tearing a ligament, for sure.

Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:23pm Cecile:

no, never did. I remember liking Steve Hackett solo recs back in the day.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:24pm Cecile:

who introduced the accordion to South Africa?
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:27pm V Priceless:

I love the title of this track.

I'm going off on a limb here Cecile, and guess the Afrikaners.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:33pm Guido from Cologne:

Hello Duane and hello people!
Brilliant mix this!
Love the show!
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:35pm Cecile:

I guess I don't know what Dutch accordion music sounds like. I thought maybe other European traders bought it.

Was the percussion track a basketball?
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:36pm fred:

@Guido: you've been missed man, where have you been? Celebrating Germany's win?
  Wed. 7/9/14 2:38pm P-90:

"unsweetened" F. Mac version!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:38pm Droll:

VP - Whoa! Thanks! I had no idea there was a video for that song! I will attest to "Please Don't Touch" being a damned fine album.
  Wed. 7/9/14 2:39pm P-90:

Ciao Guido! you've been a little scarce lately. Are you in love or something?
  Wed. 7/9/14 2:41pm P-90:

@ Droll: If I can find out what kind of blow dryer Hackett uses, I'm SO there, Man
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:41pm V Priceless:

@ Droll - cool - I agree!
Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:41pm Eli:

Thank you Eli!!!!
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:43pm Guido from Cologne:

Hi Fred!
Circumstances changin' here.

I feel sorry for Brazil, they did not deserve that.
The Bazil/Germany- and Algeria/Germany matches wvery much demonstrated how much group-psyche can be affected in order to mess up all strength and strategy.
  Wed. 7/9/14 2:43pm Listener Christoph:

wait, where/ when's the Dayton/Ohio show??
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:43pm Jan Audun Uretsky:

Avatar Wed. 7/9/14 2:53pm robyn:

i must admit you reminded me to take my allergy medicine today duane!
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:53pm Cecile:

psssst - the original Nyquil is also good. Knocks you right out so your body can repair itself.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:53pm Cecile:

I tried that other crap. Nyquil and gallons of chicken soup are the cure for me.
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:55pm V Priceless:

Agreed - chicken soup a must!
Avatar    Wed. 7/9/14 2:55pm fred:

I totally vouch for the gallons of chicken soup thing

hahahahah jan, didn't even realize it.
  Wed. 7/9/14 3:04pm P-90:

Duane: Skip the colloidal silcer, it's toxic and the claims made for it are false. try 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C every 4 hours or so, with a meal or snack, especially upon waking and at bedtime. And chicken soup or other animal stocks are good too, but not a substitute for the C.
