Live performance by Gabriel Kahane |
|||||
With the release of his "Craigslist Lieder" Gabriel Kahane created the perfect blur between mundane social media and mock artsong. Since then, Kahane has created increasingly gorgeous chamber-pop, showcasing his sweet vocal style, but always finding the beauty and humor in life. Gabe's latest album, "The Ambassador," draws inspiration from "Bruce Willis’ hair, detective fiction, modernist architecture, and race riots... a meditation on the underbelly of Los Angeles." Gabriel Kahane played live on WFMU. |

Wow, that piano interior is something else! Looks like "stone crabs" in a literal sense. Hi, Sean! |

Do you Brits celebrate any specific day as your Independence Day? I know about Guy Fawkes, but wonder if some other? Magna Carta Day? ;) |

SuW Guru:
the shortest way between your house and the fun spot is not always coincident with the link between an ice cream truck and some semen monk wrestling event
![]() |
![]() @Kat, we should follow your lead and have some kind of "day", our Patron saint is celebrated on April 23rd, no National Holiday, diddly squat really, |

KP:
Happy Summer, Irene | |

Mon. 7/7/14 12:17pm

@Sean: Perhaps it only goes to show that NO one (excl. the HRE) puts England in shackles (or a corner). Otherwise though, I thought you folks have plenty of "bank holidays." |

SuW Guru:
its easy and lame to be found for gossip when we're so lovely installed in our nest of confident comfort that we trust all the branches blindly to be looking down and tickle or taunt the creatures souls that pass.. ovulation focused minds might tend to disrupt organs in some royal fainted bird y queens

Mon. 7/7/14 1:15pm
kat330:
@Sean: Not enough time or "paper" for that! ;) Arriving in November from Boston, it was supernally magical at the get-go. Some aspects remained so -- like going from playing in the snow up in the mountains to playing in the surf all in an hour's drive. Traffic headaches are not exaggerated, and there are plenty of other demerits, but all-in-all, I sure preferred it over to Chicago. (where I moved to afterwards) |

@Sean: Oh, and if my mother had had *her* way after WWII and remained in L.A., where she awaited my dad's return from the S. Pacific, I would have been born there. She *loved* the L.A. of the '40s. |

kat330:
Really enjoyed that "Villains" track. I'm hearing a lot of lyrics about swindles and selfishness -- no lack of it in LA to be sure -- but I encountered so much more of that in Chicago and continuing on down here to my hometown, from the "upright Christian" community especially. |

Mon. 7/7/14 2:07pm
willem:
Thank you very much, Irene. I too have been following his work since his first album. Underberg still makes me cry whenever I listen to it. That building in Brooklyn you mentioned sort of reminds me of that song.
![]() |
![]() You're right about Underberg, willem. Sadly beautiful. Thanks for mentioning there's a picture of taht building in Gowanus. For many years it stood alone on that corner, saved I think by landmark status. www.flickr.com... |
![]() |
![]() loved the live set irene. on an aside, how is the radio station up in roxbury? is it all farm reports and npr or worth seeking out? |

Admittedly, I was here for Gabriel. But it's a nice setlist (love Laura Nyro), so I'm adding your station to my streaming radio folder. It's 20:25 here now and I still need to make some dinner, so bye for now.

![]() @dale, WIOX has its highs and lows. As with any station there will be some things good and some bad. I think a few of the evening shows are pretty good. Tuesday at 10pm my friend John Savory does a great freeform-ish show www.wioxradio.org... |

Van in DC:
Sharon! Tarifa! What a FANTASTIC song and album (Are We There)!! To me, the final lyrics of this song are quite an excellent summary of the entire album: To Figure It Out. Which is what I think this entire album is about...Sharon trying to figure out the balance of life, etc. with being an artist. And a touring artist at that. Tarifa was a welcome Time Out for her but I think it really brought home to her the struggle of, well, figuring it out. |
