Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 10:16am Doug Schulkind:

@Philo G
The middle school my daughter just graduated from had a cobra as its team mascot. Very way cool, in my opinion.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:17am listener james from westwood:

@kat330: I like to sauté them before they go into the omelet, along with any other veggie fillings. (I also have asparagus that I could've thrown in there. Maybe Sunday if the 'gus survives my depredations today and tomorrow.)
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you're digging it, Omar!

Ernst did the soundtrack to a recent Herzog film... CAVE OF FORGOTTEN DREAMS I think?
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Yes Philo G! Herzog has used Reijseger's music in quite a few of his films. An absolutely sublime collaboration!
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:29am Philo Gristle:

Fittingly ancient sounds. Then again Werner has always had a great taste in music.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 10:29am Doug Schulkind:

This next 12-minute tune from Grachan Moncur is one of my favorite performances on record OF ALL TIME.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:30am listener james from westwood:

You had me at "12-minute tune." Still aglow from D:O's mega-track Monday.
  Fri. 7/4/14 10:31am Omar:

Philo, if you're into Ernst stuff, check out Clusone Trio (with Han Bennink & Michael Moore). They're amazing!
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:31am Philo Gristle:

Grachan's tune reminds me a tad of my favorite 12 minute piece, Coltrane's "Ole"... lovely.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:32am Philo Gristle:

Thanks, Omar!

III seems to be doing it right
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:37am listener james from westwood:

Fitting for the holiday, the proofs I'm reading are of an American history college textbook. The chapters I have in house only go up to 1730, however, so no deep "Schoolhouse Rock" territory just yet; just a lot of depressing conquest and exploitation thus far.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:38am hyde:

@Doug whoa. that's a lineup!!!
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

@duke
Funny you should ask. Grachan Moncur (I) was a very well respected bass player. Played in numerous bands, most notably the Savoy Sultans.

Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 10:42am kat330:

@holland: We just saw the Muscle Shoals doc last weekend. Very good but somehow wanted more from it. Some of the deleted scenes actually helped illuminate, which is a good thing about DVD's / Blu-rays at times.

Most of the expat African-American musicians who recorded for BYG/Actuel regard the label owners as vile gangsters who ripped them off completely. If there is a documentary made, it will be rated NC-17 for the language and quite possibly the violence.

watching TCM with the sound down; cary grant is the only patriot with a muddy face. all the others are starch-white and powder clean.. the facial expressions are enough to "keep" the sound off
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:09am Philo Gristle:

Ha! Guess I didn't need to qualify it as famous only in Finland.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:10am kat330:

Are you easterners getting any Arthur effects yet, or even will?
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:12am Uncle Michael:

It looks gorgeous at the game in DC.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:12am Gary:

Can't believe I missed the Flashstrap set! :(
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:13am hyde:

@kat330 here in southeast mass we're getting some scattered showers now and supposedly some possibly strong thunderstorms later
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:13am ndbob:

it looks as if Arthur is heading more towards Cape Cod then the major cities
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:13am kat330:

Hopefully it will swing way off the coast for all of you.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

My daughter just came in the studio to give me a bite of a Nutella-infused biscuit she just baked. I would love her anyway, of course, but still...
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:14am annie:

yeah, here in asheville it is sunny and hot and i have a friend on the coast who says it never touched there
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:14am kat330:

Mmm, I like this!
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I'll give you a private screening after the show.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:16am kat330:

I say "easterners" to distinguish, but actually we're in the Eastern time zone. Just the farthest western edge of it.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

"Nutella-infused" is one hell of a compound modifier.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:17am ndbob:

I like being at the western edge of the time zone because of the later sunsets
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:18am kat330:

@annie: Have you had a good spring, plenty of rain? When we visited A-ville 2-3 summers ago, it was a bad drought ongoing.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:18am Gary:

I had horrible insomnia last night, woke up early and then crashed again on the couch and am just now having my first cup of coffee. This Metzger track is helping, I will say
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:19am hyde:

ok, i'm off. bye all!
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:20am kat330:

@Bob: There is that, but I'm an early riser and don't like the longer darkness then.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:20am listener james from westwood:

It's just a little breezy up here in northern NJ. We had 2 nights of violent thunderstorms, but they weren't Arthur's doing. Word is today's going to be wet, but the weekend promises sun and cooler temps (90s yesterday & Wed).
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:22am kat330:

@James: You'll get our relief that arrived here yesterday. Our high was 76 F. on THursday, and it was 58 F when we got up this a.m.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:22am ndbob:

@kat Jamestown was also at the western edge of a time zone - I liked that it didn't get totally dark this time of year until close to 1030 - the downside was sunrise close to 830 in the winter

Fireworks always have to be delayed for it to be dark enough, and we miss some ISS pass-overs because it's just too light still.
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:26am annie:

kat, the summer this year has been pretty humid, not much rain.. last year it was miserably wet..
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:26am ndbob:

Yep - fireworks in Jamestown started well after 10
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:26am Shaun:

Two things:

(1) Don't forget to stay tuned for Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time broadcast, up next here on the Drummer Stream. It's gonna be a good'n: wfmu.org...

(2) The soul set closing today's show is gonna knock your socks off, wash 'em, fold 'em, and put 'em back on.

Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:33am kat330:

@annie:! You got it! Couldn't make vacation plans this summer because I got a 3-mo. long jury summons (to be on call at least). Even got my passport renewed in April so the globe's our limit (well, actually, our budget's our limit). Saw a really nice area near Cookeville, TN -- only a 4-hour drive away -- and might take a long weekend before October.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:35am Artie:

NC Outer Banks bound on Sun. NC12 currently closed, but damage looks minimal. DOT hopes to re-open it later today or tomorrow. Vacation reprieve soon, please!
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I think so. I can't remember if that was the source. The old Google Reader was terrific at searching already visited pages.

Whoaaa, Mack attack!
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:40am listener james from westwood:

Shame about the on-call status; hope there's some room for a vacation after that. I haven't been called since March 2000. I vote consistently, so I'm somewhat surprised I haven't been.

well, kat, you'd be welcome at my place if you choose to come
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:44am kat330:

@james: This is my second time since 2011! That time never even had to appear (it's a call every weekend to see if you're needed) and imagine much the same this time. However, JT MUST use his vacation days by the 3rd week of Sept., so not a lot of time.
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:46am kat330:

@annie: :) ☼

Top notch soul set Doug!
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:50am kat330:

The local Knob Knee-anderthals have it in for us, we're convinced. Philo (oops on the JT) got his FIRST and only traffic ticket ON his very birthday on Tuesday. And it was a traffic trap set up (not for speeding, but at a stop sign).
Avatar    Fri. 7/4/14 11:51am listener james from westwood:

UM, will be there with sparklers lit!
Avatar Fri. 7/4/14 11:51am Doug Schulkind:
