Listener comments!

  Thu. 6/26/14 3:18am P-90:

Hi Julie! This week I just had to go back to the Archive and listen to the Emile Simon performance and interview, and I'm sure I'll listen to it again, it was that good. I had planned to go to Summerstage on Saturday, then couldn't make it. I assume you were there and the show was great?
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:19am Julie:

It was and it wasn't..I'll talk about it in a bit. And yes, her set was amazing
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:24am Guido from Cologne:

Good morning Julie!
Will Emile Simon performance go to the FMA?
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:25am Julie:

Yes, all except Wicked Game
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:28am Guido from Cologne:

Great!
  Thu. 6/26/14 3:40am P-90:

Guten TZAG Guido. Good weather in Cologne? It's humid and rainy here.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:43am Guido from Cologne:

Guten TZAG P-90!
Sun here!
And I have to work! :-(
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:45am Droll:

Okay, I'll bite: Why not Wicked Game?

(Seattle is partly overcast, 64F)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:46am Julie:

Because it's a cover
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:46am BadGuyZero:

Hiya!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:47am Julie:

Here for the Texans, BGZ?
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:48am BadGuyZero:

And the other great tunes you play.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 3:53am Guido from Cologne:

Aren't there problems wit FMA Creative Commons and average rights societies?
Being in German rights society GEMA the option for other licensing is finished for livetime. (Hard to believe but true.) Just asking ...
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:01am Julie:

Guido, that's way over my head. Sorry.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:07am Droll:

US copyright law recognizes a mechanical reproduction, a live performance, or a "song" (definitions vary with your choice of attorney). Performer's rights societies might be involved in one or more of those. Things get ugly quickly over very little, and FMA has little incentive to fight.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:11am Matt from Springfield:

GAZEY! Of the LOUDER variety!

Morning Julie and Upside Down Bats! Great Rngrs performance!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:12am Julie:

Morning Matt!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:13am Julie:

oh, btw, for some reason the interview was recorded with reverb so we sound like we're in some giant hall
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:14am BadGuyZero:

They're one of the better bands in Dallas right now.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:14am Julie:

I was lucky to catch them, they were on a bill with Dead Leaf Echo and it was super last minute
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:16am Droll:

Sounds appropriate enough... Speaking of which, kudos to Serge Z, it's difficult to squeeze all that sound into speakers.
Band is just fantastic, that is really what I think.
  Thu. 6/26/14 4:16am P-90:

Guten Morgen, Herr Mattias von Schpunjenbubskvarenpinz!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:17am Julie:

Oh Matt, some of my guests are playing Springfield on the 4th. Valerie Gentile & Noir
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:18am Matt from Springfield:

And um, Guten Morgen to you too, P-90! ... :)

@Julie: Really, my Springfield? Where!?
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:19am Guido from Cologne:

Great! some live music in the morning again!
Love it!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:19am Guido from Cologne:

@Droll
Thanks for the info! Roiughly the same here.
The thing is with composers rights.
If you are a member of GEMA you make a kind of live-long contract, that from that point in your live you must distribute everthing you creat with the GEMA and international partners involved. You are even not allowed to put somthing to public domain, nor Creative Commons or even just put sth. to Youtube for self promotion. (There are protests and sues against this. But no solutions yet.)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:19am Julie:

empire nightclub, Secret Agent Soiree
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:21am Julie:

There is some sort of songwriters rights thing going on in Congress, Paul Williams has been part of it (he is prez of ascap)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:21am Matt from Springfield:

Oh WOW! That's like the only place national/international acts would go! I'm looking into that!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:22am Julie:

It was just such a coincidence I had to pass on the info
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:22am Julie:

You'll hear Valerie next week, and she is amazing live
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:26am Matt from Springfield:

Thanks for passing on, Julie! :)

And that's appropos--Paul Williams is best known for being a songwriter (though thanks to you we have heard his singing, as well!)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:28am Julie:

I expect you to take photos of what they're wearing :)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:30am Droll:

There's a good English Wikipedia page for GEMA, but I'm immediately puzzled by the concept of three classes of "professional". I have some schadenfreude GEMA is stuck playing catch-up with technology just like everywhere else...

In some ways GEMA sounds cool, in the US you're on you're own and you end up publishing through ASCAP or BMI or some other smaller-scale accounting fiasco. At least it's all public record with GEMA.
  Thu. 6/26/14 4:36am P-90:

@Guido I'm 100% certain that if you asked Chris Isaak if he thought Emilie Simone's performance of Wicked Game during a live in-station set should go on The Free Music Archive he would say ( as the songwriter): "sure! no worries!" But he has contracts with various entities that each own a piece of his income, and that's the real reason it's blocked-- we're a religiously capitalist nation that's lagging behind Europe in recognizing intellectual commons of many kinds.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:38am Matt from Springfield:

@P-90: That's the simpliest explanation--in America too many people "own a piece" of songs (or the versions thereof) to license them efficiently.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:40am Droll:

P-90, Which is precisely why an entire generation bypassed that system altogether and "freed" it all. Of course, Chris Isaak is free to say his music is free now that he made his million. Emille is still excited about working her own merch table.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:40am Guido from Cologne:

APPLAUSE!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:41am Matt from Springfield:

Hall of ECHO! choechoecho!!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:41am Droll:

[Snapping one hand, refreshing beverage in other]
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:44am BadGuyZero:

They were nominated for a Dallas Observer Music Award for Best Americana Band a couple of years ago. They got a lot of publicity locally when they requested that their nomination be rescinded.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:46am Guido from Cologne:

I go for the reverb!
Way better than mike switched off as happened to john Allen recently.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:46am Matt from Springfield:

"Don't mess with my gang! And GET OFF MY LAWN!!"...
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:46am Julie:

aww poor John Allen
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:47am Matt from Springfield:

Hiya BGZ, and kudos to your latest "vaguely seizure-inducing avatar", as someone put it :)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:47am Guido from Cologne:

@Droll

There are some advantages in German law that preven the artist form fooleries. Like it is not possible to sell an authorship away completely.

On the other hand GEMA is so incredibly old fashioned. They rely on the good old method to gather music licence money by visiting shops and listen after public radio doodeling. They sue YouTube ... wich basically is not too wrong ... since big company is living on bootlegging in the very end.

But I think it would have been the very duty of the rights societies to set up asomething like sopztify in the very dawning of MP3 ... it would have been the justest system of music licencsing imaginable. Instead they imped musicians on using modern methods of self promotion. It is so plain annoying.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:48am Matt from Springfield:

@Guido: Was it John who was switched off, or the guest? That's not good for his show, but a one-sided interview would be Pythonesque in another context..
  Thu. 6/26/14 4:48am P-90:

A guy like Isaak is a fairly substantial business. He has representation, management, record company, etc. who each own a part of his income. Their contracts specify strict limits on the distribution of his work, to "protect" their interests...
BTW you guys may have heard that whenever Dean Martin was broke, he would sell someone a share of his future income for a cash "investment", eventually he had promised several thousand percent of his earnings (but he wasn't a songwriter).
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:48am Droll:

Really humble buncha shoegazers... Great set (music & interview). The reverb reminded me of bootleg backstage interviews!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:50am Matt from Springfield:

@P-90: A real life "Producer"!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:51am Matt from Springfield:

Bootleg interview, in high quality 128k streaming!

That can be a front page quote for FMU in general--Lowest of lo-fi detrius, delivered to you in high quality streaming! :)
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:54am fred von helsing:

better late than nebbish
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:54am Guido from Cologne:

what is HiFi ?
Fidelity to what?
All rock music is NoFi !
My very personal point of view.
I was thinking about re-mastering the one or the other unlucky FMA-content ... if i just had the time.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:55am Guido from Cologne:

hey fred!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:55am Droll:

David Bowie also sells futures.

[Crying onto Guido's shoulder] You must come to Seattle or I must come to Cologne to discuss the moment things went wrong... as if they were ever right.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:58am BadGuyZero:

Their Bandcamp page has the vowels in the URL, but on the page itself the vowels are gone.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 4:58am BadGuyZero:

Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:02am fred von helsing:

she conveys pure sweetness and light. two qualities that are unfortunately underrated.
  Thu. 6/26/14 5:02am P-90:

Good band, she has a terrific voice!
Maybe the "hall" style reverb the engineer used on the live set was left on for the interview? Or was the interview not done right after the set? Actually, the big reverb sounded cool on the interview, like a Murray the K old-style AM radio sound
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:03am Matt from Springfield:

Émilie in Space! :D
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:04am fred von helsing:

hey guido ! Let's party
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:04am Julie:

Yes she wears a controller, she didn't have that for her set here, but she did wear it for summer stage
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:04am Finbar:

Wow!! She has a wonderfully extraordinary voice. Great cover...making it all her own.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:04am Guido from Cologne:

When I saw great Quiltl, some girls were blabbling around and couldn't stop ... and i was annoyed. But in the end result they were young and cute enough to flirt around with the male band members ... Such the things go, music , girlsm, blabbering, flirting ...
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:05am Guido from Cologne:

... arrghhh QUILT ... the band
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:06am Guido from Cologne:

@fred
I'm about to dance in the sun, but i was supposed to do something "productive" ... gee ... sun, music , chatting ...
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:07am Finbar:

Dancing in the sun is productive.

- Dancing in the sun : € 86,-
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:11am fred von helsing:

the band Bleached is working
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:12am Julie:

Morning Wynford!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:13am Finbar:

Woah, this Wire tune is reminding me of Eno. It just sounds like something Eno would do.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:13am Matt from Springfield:

Yes' "Yours Is No Disgrace" parallel in the rhythm here?? Prog people?
  Thu. 6/26/14 5:16am P-90:

@ Droll: Bowie actually did an IPO and "went public", his shares are traded like any other big corporation.
@ Julie: Unfortunately, as I 'm sure you know, all that bullshit is the norm at Summerstage, When I go there, I go in dreading what might go on in the audience, particularly whoever I'm gonna wind up in the vicinity of...
@fred von h. Good Morning!
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:18am fred von helsing:

purraps Émilie is an emissary from a strange alien civilisation bent on nurturing our higher emotional intelligences and turn us into true sentient beings, flying in the face of all our baser impulses, bringing us light, and grooves, and the full charm of the galactic civilisation that we know is out there but it is not tangible, in a way that would liberate our butts to bounce and sway in the cosmic wind
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:24am Droll:

Bowie went public? How ironic...

I wish to stay upwind of the bouncing cosmic butt wind.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:28am fred von helsing:

Consider the perspective of the monolith in "2001", when we meet it again in orbit about Jupiter. "Oh okay, the monkeys finally got rockets 'n shit." If only we had played it some Émilie... some space oddity... some dog... some danceable groove... what would it have said ?
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:33am Sem Chumbo:

Cosmic butt wind: wasn't that a Lemmy side project at one time? Good morning, Julie, and dark knights all.
Avatar Thu. 6/26/14 5:33am Julie:

Some rumor says the Grerman common word for "heretic", "Ketzer" comes from "Katzenhintern küssen" ... kissing the bottom of a cat ... and not "cathari".

Must run shortly! Loved it!
Thank you Julie!

And just like that...Julie's gone! Thanks to the Blackstone Rngrs, Serge Z, Julie and WFMU for a great set and show!
