Btw, in the picture atop the playlist, Kopf/Kurz is the silver-foil job on the right, while Volkswhale is the orange-y one with the pic of souls in torment. To Volkswhale's left is Glorious Moodmen. As for the Metabolist -- that one's a mystery....

@ Kay: My in-theme is from this: www.discogs.com... The spoken part at the very beginning is the Larry Mondello Band, though.

@ Rich: Have you heard of this Portland band? (Glorious Moodmen) They refer to KBOO in one of the tracks.

I just tuned in to hear the last 30 seconds of Volkswhale. Can't believe i missed whatever the hell that was. It sounded amazing.

Greetings, cklequ! Sorry you missed it. One day I'll play that tape again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm
Rich in Washington:

No. I have not. Not too surprising. I was in a virtual coma through most of the 90s. Also known as parenthood.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
cklequ:

.....though this Glorious Moodmen is pretty nice too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm
Rich in Washington:

There was a pretty rich music scene in much of the 90s and KBOO was much more involved. There are bands whose sole recordings were recorded live off the air at KBOO.
Part of it was The Church of Northwest Music show, with lots and lots of local bands appearing on the air. Sadly, it ended sometime in the late 90s/ early oughties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
Rich in Washington:

Much of it still being recorded on open reel, DAT. I think local DJ Jay Bozich has a really huge local band archive, since he did most of the live sound at KBOO and several Portland venues.
  12:54pm
Dean:

Speaking of Portland, has anybody heard lately from Richard Meltzer?

  12:58pm
Dean:

I don't know that, RiW. Satyricon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm
Rich in Washington:

@Dean: It was a documentary about Portland's oldest, scuzziest Punk Rock/Cabaret club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Rich in Washington:

I think Meltzer was in it due to his association with the band Smegma. The guy who shot and directed it is a member of the Portland OR faction of Smegma.
Avatar 1:01pm
Tony Coulter:

... which closed before I moved here.
Avatar 1:02pm
Tony Coulter:

Satyricon, that is -- not Smegma!
  1:03pm
Dean:

Found an interview w/ him that mentions the club. I knew Meltzer in LA, got him a speaking gig at my college alma mater, visited him at KPFK when he did the overnight show, used to correspond with him. (Took him to dinner at Higgins in Portland.) Was reading some of his stuff last night. Wish he had a regular writing gig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I have no idea what he's doing now.

Avatar 1:07pm
Tony Coulter:

Yep! Chopped-Up Logical Song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm
Rich in Washington:

Satyricon was really amazing. Another place and time. Almost all of that part of PDX is completely unrecognizable to me now. It's been made safe for upper-middle class white kids now. A place to shop and stare lovingly into the eyes of their iPads in outdoor cafes.
  1:10pm
Dean:

Much like the beloved Al's Bar east of downtown L.A. It and the Masque were the L.A. punk venues of the late '70s. Al's closed in '01, I believe, and became a trendy disco or or gallery or something of the sort. In the heyday, what a joint! Best jukebox ever. Saw many a show there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Rich in Washington:

The Satyricon made a few feeble attempts at comebacks, with a series of sleazy owners.. The PDX music scene changed a lot by then. It was finally knocked down and a Ronald McDonald House corporate office was built on it.
At one point, sleazy landlords conspired to blow up the whole block the 'Con was on, due to all of the heroin activity. The doc claims the PDX police helped them sweep people out of the area as the guys bombed the bodega next door.
Avatar 1:18pm
Tony Coulter:

I may be jumping the gun with the track titles here -- it's kind of hard to tell where "songs" stop and start with this tape!
  1:24pm
Dean:

Continuing with the "back in the day" punk lore, here's Al's Bar's facade, famous for its airplane: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/164029611400764423/ Entry was via the door beneath the canopy marked, "American Hotel." I kid you not, on our wedding day my wife and I held a "reception" at Al's. Drunk Horse played.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
Rich in Washington:

That's cool! I've often heard of Al's. Here's what Satyricon looked like, after about five years of running: www.wweek.com...
  1:28pm
Dean:

What a beautiful mess! Can't get more rebel than souvlaki!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Rich in Washington:

The owner was a really cool Greek dude named George. He really loved any kind of arty weirdness, so he turned the tavern into a nightclub/cabaret. It was only by default that it became Portland's punk rock club in the 80s. Lots of cool poetry and performance (and sex and drugs) went on in there.
Avatar 1:37pm

This Kopf/Kurz thing was recently reissued ... on cassette -- but in an edition of 33. A lot of good that does anybody.

Avatar 2:16pm

Haven't heard the sequel -- will have to investigate! Thanks, Dean!

Then again, maybe they're just covering songs by the artist formerly known as Prince.

  2:37pm

Shoot, sometimes I can't recognize my native language forwards!
Avatar 2:40pm
Tony Coulter:

The *sound* of Magma would seem to be definite influence on Metabolist, methinks....
  2:44pm
Dean:

I've mentioned this before. A friend of mine created his own language inspired by hearing Magma when we were scrawny 15-year-olds: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/12/24/121224fa_fact_foer Took him a quarter of a century.
Avatar 2:48pm
Tony Coulter:

I remember that article. Very interesting!
  2:52pm
Dean:

John and his twin brother Paul were precocious, to say the least. They were both very artistically adept. We used to create one-off faux-progressive rock LPs and smuggle them *into* record stores. They consisted of beat-up vinyl slipped into covers painted by them, with artist names like Stregone Cosmico, suitably Italian. Once, a mutual friend fell for it and bought the record.
Avatar 2:58pm
Tony Coulter:

I once planted a cassette in the WKCR tape library that I had recorded myself with the goal of making the most wretched music possible. Have no idea if it was ever aired.
Avatar 2:59pm
Tony Coulter:

Didn't even keep a copy for myself, unfortunately....
