Courtney Barnett is playing Cambridge MA tonight.... that seems like a bit of a hellride to make the show
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:24pm
rrg:

3-4 hours from New York to Cambridge. Why, that's nothing.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:24pm

That's EASY!

You can wait to hear her in Cambridge after WE'VE heard her.

Show is at 9:00 but she better not hit traffic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Guido from Cologne:

Courtney already got rave reviews over here ... "the next ultra cool thing to come". Loved her double-EP.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:27pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

She should ride Amtrak's Acela to get there quickly and in comfort. The Eastern Shuttle isn't flying anymore.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:27pm

They'll hold the curtain for her. Or whatever it is they have at such venues.

Courtney and the Courtney Barnetts will make it to Cambridge via teleportation.

"A curtain for Courtney" ... somehow this sounds logical.

Sinclair is not far from MIT so perhaps that's true. Hopefully she and her mates can get some food there - it's not bad.

Tough break for her Socceroos against The Netherlands today. Hopefully, they'll score a few against Spain next week....everyone else is.

Del Shannon on Liberty... lost of special, interesting cuts during that period.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
rrg:

Del also does "When You Walk in the Room" on that album. Which is why I have it.

Play that one too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm
Guido from Cologne:

interesting version of "hurt" though the very original by Miss Tony Fisher is very special and the most psychedelic 1958 had to offer.

I agree, Guido. Fun dose of phasey goodness in that version.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:55pm
rrg:

I went back and listened to this album after Irwin played it last week.

I always kinda-sorta liked it even though there's a little too much hippie sentiment in there.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The Socceroos were eliminated today. I hope Courtney takes it well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
Irwin:

rrg: yes, there is a high proportion of hippie swill on Surf's Up, but several timeless Brian Wilson songs too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Well.. that was a classic piece of Can-Con
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:13pm
rrg:

One thing that surprised me about Surf's Up (when I read more about it) was how much of it was NOT written by Brian Wilson, though he's all over it.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
rrg:

Can-Con can't go unmentioned.

That's not a dig, Andrew. It's just a fact.

My brother was a MuchMusic VJ so a lot of that stuff is burned into my head, too.
  5:17pm
Listening Out There:

Wasn't Surfs Up one of those late Beach Boys recordings that are all over the map? I used to have a copy of 20/20, which had stuff that was supposed to be on Smile, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I spent a considerable amount of time affix to Much Music around the time that song came out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Guido from Cologne:

I go for "Sunflower".
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
rrg:

Hey! I have NJX@NY$!, but where can I get NJX@NY$!#2?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:21pm
rrg:

I can already tell this Roland Kirk piece is going to be great.
  5:26pm
Listening Out There:

Now, kiddies, Roland Kirk was known for playing more than one reed instrument simultaneously. In the current piece, he's done that in a couple of stretches, both in the solo and the melody...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
Guido from Cologne:

I abuse WFMU as an antidote to worldcup outdoor tv. It helps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Roland Kirk was a monster and there is video proof!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
rrg:

Yeah, I gather that all over Europe people are watching the World Cup outdoors on flat screen TVs in public places.
  5:35pm

Here in Seattle, some are watching the World Cup in a gentrified alley: http://alleynetworkproject.com/category/nordalley/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:46pm
nickybones:

Man, totally remember this DK covers album. Wonder what I did with that record...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
Irwin:

Beth Sorrentino wrote this. Originally recorded by her old band Suddenly Tammy.
  5:51pm
Laura L:

That Murals song's a keeper. Thanks, Irwin--very nice show today, and Courtney was super--and I was just thinking this reminded me of Beth Sorrentino.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
rrg:

Sorry, Beth wrote the Murals song, or the Cara Dillon song? I blinked for a second.
  5:55pm
Laura L:

I think the Cara Dillon song, right, Irwin?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 5:59pm
rrg:

Right, the Cara Dillon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm
Irwin:

Yep, "River, Run" is Beth's. Cara was a fan of Suddenly Tammy and had wanted to record that song for years.
Avatar 9:38pm
Droll:

IC: Did you have horrible day jobs?
CB: [Laughing too hard to respond] "Yeah! I've had plenty of horrible day jobs!"
IC: Our listeners want to know you've suffered for your art.

No, I do NOT want to hear good musicians suffer for their art.

...and then her story about her parents. Musicians are held in such low regard, when it manifests itself in stories and shows like this... I'm speechless.

On a happier note, "How to Make a Tape Recorder" was excellent and your show is great (when you're not portraying mistreating musicians as normal/okay). You have always been encouraged to test the limits of how much Killing Joke is appropriate. And hearing the Bonzo Shuffle can only foretell good things. I'm looking forward to players who were omitted from the first episode: Hampton, Rich, Gadd, Bozzio, Smith, Peart, Colaiuta, Copland, Phillips... So many great drummers to enjoy and compare and contrast...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Irwin:

I asked her those questions, and she gave polite and light-hearted answers. Your criticism of her is actually a criticism of me. Which is fine, I offer no defense. I'm sure you speak for many listeners.
  1:42pm
mrose:

"Our listeners want to know you've suffered for your art."
Irwin, this is why I've been listening to you for the past 35 years. Your deliciously outrageous sense of humor has been a cornerstone of what you offer listeners.
