My very very favorite restaurant in Durham, which happens to be a taqueria, was just shuttered & chained by the City for failure to pay back taxes to the tune of $185,000. Auction likely. I cannot express the extent of my grief. Also Duke Energy just WILDLY overpruned many of the trees in our neighborhood because they are cheapass m*fuckers. Coal ash dumping m*fuckers.

Digging the show, been cleaning. I've heard an inordinate amount of Buffalo Daughter on WFMU the last two weeks (and hadn't thought about them since the 90s.)

Wow, i have this Coldcut remix record somewhere.
  Wed. 6/4/14 8:16pm Jill B.:

It looks like the gang's all here! Hi everyone!!!!! Gary....some very interesting stuff this hour so far.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:17pm Gary:

Howdy, NGH -- that might be because Buffalo Daughter just put out a best of collection & has been touring
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:17pm Gary:

Hi Mom -- nice to see you two nights in a row! See you in person next week!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:20pm doca:

Hi, Gary, things are working here again. Hi, Gary's mom too!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:21pm davex:

This is interesting stuff, Gary, thanks! Need to call it a night now, though...
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:22pm Gary:

Hi again, Doca, and have a great night, Dave!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:27pm Holly in NC:

@Fleep - True that. Nonetheless the Massacre of the Trees is astonishing. All over local news, may nake national.

In other news, my famous neighbor who is co-owner of a highly esteemed WFMU - friendly independent record label has two extra TONS of wood chips in her yard availailable for freecycling.

And! Someone hacked my Twitter account 4 days and *only* EFD thought to let me know. Apparently I've been espousing the virtues of some Dr. Oz -approved diet aid.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:28pm Gary:

Wait, you're saying that diet aid DOESN"T work?
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:29pm doca:

@Holly: Hi, Holly, you always have something odd to tell us.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:30pm doca:

Fracking only reminds me of Battlestar Galactica. And the meaning of the word is the same on both cases...It is something I wish the US legislation didn't approve.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:31pm Holly in NC:

Oh and hello & warm greetings toJill, UM, ngh, hyde, ljfw, doug, doca, & Mr. Fab! And anyone else I missed!

@doca = I could go on, but I won't. ;-)
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:32pm doca:

You got your Twitter account back at least, Holly?
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:35pm doca:

I'm doing a short course with an American professor as a special topic on my graduate stuff. She teaches at the University of Alabama and studies how Brazil was thought in the nineteenth-century US, very interesting. Sadly she doesn't knows WFMU...
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:37pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - Here's a real tip. If one is stupid enough to drink red wine when one is housesitting, and is also clumsy enough to spill red wine on white linen, one's ass is totally saved by the miracle mix of Dawn®detergent and hydrogen peroxide. A miracle, I tell you. Seriously! Entire stain vanished completely & instantaneously - poof. Where has this piece of knowledge been for my entire adult life? Best use of Google ever.

@doca - Yes. Thank you for asking!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:37pm hyde:

hi holly. sorry about the taqueria.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:38pm hyde:

(and the trees!)
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:39pm Gary:

Thanks for the tip -- now I just need to find an awesome house to sit
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:41pm Gary:

R.I.P. Elodie Lauten. And thanks to Doug for point to this album earlier today
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:45pm Holly in NC:

Oh gosh, i didn't know. Thank you Gary/Doug.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:46pm doca:

Have you seen this? A friend of mine just sent it. Smithsonian institute has made a replica of George Clinton's P-funk mothership www.npr.org...
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:47pm doca:

And how come I haven't heart Elodie Lauten before?
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:48pm doca:

*heart/heard, just the same thing
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:50pm hyde:

@doca I read a great story online once about the original mothership and how it eventually got junked after being at one of the P-funk members houses for years, but I can't find it
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:52pm Holly in NC:

@doca - That story just made my day! And in fact, I just tweeted the link ;-)
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:52pm Uncle Michael:

Wasn't it dumped in the woods or something?
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:53pm glenn:

who dumped in the woods?
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:53pm doca:

@hyde: that surely was an awesome piece of house decoration! the NPR post up there mentions that the original was at G. Cliton's home studio
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:54pm doca:

Oh, I got it wrong, a replica was in his studio. Sorry, people, too much wine maybe.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:54pm Uncle Michael:

I saw the '90s version in action.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:56pm Uncle Michael:

Reasons to be Turkish, Part Three.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:57pm doca:

Does any of you remember a 80's-90's videogame called Battletoads? The SNES version had a song which sounds just like that little passage of this music before the chorus. Anyway, this is GREAT, one of my favorite songs ever.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:58pm Uncle Michael:

I'm calling my metal band "Battletoads."
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 8:58pm hyde:

ah, here it is! unsurprisingly, what actually happened to the Mothership is even murkier than I remembered: George Clinton, Parliament-Funkadelic and a missing Mothership blog.washingtonpost.com...
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:01pm doca:

@hyde: thanks! I'll read it later, but good to know the fate of the Mothership.
@UM: You know this is one of the most impossible videogames ever released, don't? It's better your band matches it.
  Wed. 6/4/14 9:01pm mike east:

@doca - I remember seeing commercials for battle toads and maybe a friend had it, but I was a sega genesis guy
Good evening bodega poppers!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:02pm Uncle Michael:

I'm no gamer. They're all hard for me.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:03pm Holly in NC:

@doca - print out and save the wine stain tip I offered Gary!
Seriously, I used to work at a fairly high-end restaurant where we were taught to use club soda for any embarrassing drips - frankly, not all that effective. Dawn/peroxide crazy effective. I don't personally use Dawn at home because I eschew P&G (and environmentally unsound sudsing agents & potential carcinogens) but I am going to suck up & buy a small bottle for stain use only.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:04pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:08pm doca:

@mike: I only had a SNES at the time, but I know it was on Sega too.
@Holly: I'll check it later! Always good to have cleaning tips
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:09pm Gary:

BTW, I blew my back out today hauling my bike up the two flights of stairs to my apartment. Anyone have any tips for back blow-out? I can sit, and am fine now, but if I get up, I have to hunch over like a 300-year-old guy
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

Drugs.
  Wed. 6/4/14 9:10pm mike east:

@doca- Ah, prolly right. I only ever owned 4 games and I stunk at them
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:12pm doca:

@Gary: that sounds bad, sorry but I don't have any tips...
@mike: yeah, I was never that at good at it, but SNES and, later, Playstation were an important part of my 'upbringing'
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:13pm doca:

By the way, tomorrow is my birthday. I'm pre-celebrating it with red wine (not staining anything, though) and listening to the GTD stream
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:14pm hyde:

@doca, happy birthday!
  Wed. 6/4/14 9:14pm mike east:

@gary if it's a muscle thing, putting a tennis ball between your back and a wall and rolling it around the affected area is a good way to self massage it
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:15pm glenn:

no way. the gerbil died?
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:16pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - My housemate the heavy-lifting bartender has chronic severe back pain & no health insurance. And huge bills from doctor & chiropractor, neither of whom were very useful.
Heating pad #1. Tylenol #2 (if you don't drink). Weed #3.
#1 & #3 seem to work best for him.

@doca Happy Birthday!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:16pm Gary:

Happy early birthday, DOCA!

  Wed. 6/4/14 9:17pm mike east:

Cheers, doca. I'm enjoying a gorgeous red myself. Happy bday
  Wed. 6/4/14 9:18pm Jill B.:

Gary, ice it! Take some aspirin. Heat will just keep the back area inflamed. A little bit of motherly advice. See you in Oregon next week! Holly, I think that is similar to the concoction that we used to mix up and apply to our dogs when they got sprayed by skunks.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:19pm doca:

Thanks Gary, Holly, hyde, and mike!

@Gary: Yeah, my brother had to undergo surgery for hernia earlier this year and one thing that soothed his pain was a heated pad, maybe it will work.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:20pm glenn:

huh. oxycontin eased my pain after my hernia op.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:22pm Holly in NC:

@Jill B - we used tomato juice on skunked dogs - always kept a case in the basement!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:28pm Gary:

Howdy, Glenn!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:30pm glenn:

Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:33pm Doug Schulkind:

This song is خيالي, Gary.
  Wed. 6/4/14 9:33pm Jill B.:

@Holly.....we have used tomato juice, but when you don't have any on hand, try the other Dawn/peroxide. By the way, screw Duke Energy!

and...... once again the blue jays are kicking the shit out of an opposing team.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:39pm doca:

@Gary: I don't know how the liner notes to this Brazuca comp are, but a rough translation of the chorus would be "I've already pretended to be a saint, but I've sent it all to hell and now I'm my own boss"
  Wed. 6/4/14 9:40pm Filip:

Cheers from Warsaw, Poland. Thanks for playing Brygada Kryzys... there was lots of interesting music in the early 80's in Poland, due to many factors mainly the punk movement and the local social/political movement Solidarnosc which eventually resulted in the imposition of the martial law(Dec '81). June 4, 2014 is/was the 25 anniversary of the first free parliamentary elections in any of the Eastern Bloc countries and a landslide victory for Solidarity movement therefore ending communism. Before Prague, Berlin or any other place in the communist countries. Obama just left last morning after the anniversary cellebration... Cheers!
PS. There is an interesting documentry on the Polish music scene in the early 80s: Beats of Freedom...
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:41pm Doug Schulkind:

Howdy, Filip!
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:41pm hyde:

i only *just* figured out that Jill was talking about the red wine removal style concoction being sprayed on the skunked dogs. I had previously been trying to figure out how you would mix up a heating pad, tylenol and weed and spray it on a skunked dog.
Avatar Wed. 6/4/14 9:41pm Gary:

Filip! Thanks for all of that ... I'm gonna have to track down Beats of Freedom
