Hi Doug! It's Friday, the semester is over, that can only mean one thing: Giving my staff some Give the Drummer Some.
Avatar 10:05am Cecile:

our new bin was much bigger. And I got to break format because I was the ONLY one who did the format perfectly. Now, people heard a lot of jazz reissues and deep cuts from popular albums, but I could even bring my own records in eventually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am tikk:

Wait, we don't get to hear the reason the Pitt DJs had to play 3 tracks from that certain bin?
Avatar 10:07am Cecile:

I think this may be the reason: to prepare you for the "real" world. Never mind that I know plenty of free-form DJs that had no problem getting commercial or NPR jobs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Doug Schulkind:

Hey there Randy, how the hades are you! Tell your staff I refuse to apologize for this cacaphonic holy mess you are bringing into there lives.

@tikk
It wasn't at Pitt, actually. And I couldn't tell you the reason, because there really is none. Basically, it is a way to enforce that DJs keep up with the new music that "the station" wants the DJs to keep up with. Crazy
Avatar 10:08am Cecile:

you can't keep up with new music - there is too damn much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am tikk:

Doug, thanks, didn't mean to imply it was Pitt U. And I guess I get it--otherwise you'd have mildly controlled chaos, or WFMU, as it's otherwise known.
  10:10am Randy:

Most of my staff appreciates it. The one who already has a headache not so much :)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11am Alex In Illinois:

That we the rule when I DJed at WVKR, Vassar's radio station too. We had the bin of rotation records. We had to play something like one track from any three in the bin during the hour. I think the hourly station ID and the public service announcements we had to do for legal reasons. Then, senior year, they asked me to do an African music show once a week, which did not have any music rotation requirements. I still had to do the "PSAs" and the legal IDs, but beyond that, whatever music I played was up to me.
Avatar 10:11am Holly in NC:

Avatar 10:13am Cecile:

The U 0f M got around that by having WJJX as a top 40 AM station, and WCBN as the freeform station.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up the track after next: Some Sun Ra you have NEVER HEARD BEFORE.

@tikk
Typically the reason that student radio stations enforce the playing of certain music is so that they can "report" those tracks and a) continue to get free records from those labels, and b) to look cool in certain publications that publicize radio station's playlists. Both are deeply insipid reasons, in my unhumble opinion.

Turn it UP, Randy. I swear it will help/

Hi Hoily in NC!!!! Bagpipes love you!

Keep breathing, Van. In, out, in, out. Good!

@Nine in PGH
I am not so flummoxed by the enforced reading of PSAs and station promos. I love having the freedom to NOT read them, but I don't mind that some stations feel the need to pay some lip service to community interests.

It is the enforced playing of music from specified CDs that I find revolting. If I do end up doing something on the air, I will use the "bin" records as talkover tracks.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

I just can't fathom why independent, non-commercial, student-activity-fee-funded radio stations who have to answer to NO ONE, place onerous aesthetic restrictions on themselves. It almost feels to me like they kids are just in training to be close-minded adults.

Going way back to when this came up...since I was in the kitchen then. I believe there is a growing trend in college radio to emulate the commercial medium in order to justify the continued existence of the stations, course offerings, faculty and staff overhead, licensing, etc. The idea is that it's a training ground and they need to learn to be working professionals. It's long been this way for college television stations and newspapers so why should radio be any fun? One must learn to live with a crushed soul now, because that's how the real world is.

@NorthGuineaHills: That is the most horrible college radio station story I have ever heard. I think that is worse than a few token "rotation bin" cuts per hours.

At University of Maryland, where my sister teaches, they have both a broadcast FM station (with Internet streaming) and an Internet-only station. But the weird thing is that they never have all of the time slots filled up. Their schedule has too many empty spots where they go off the air. When I was in college, there were more students and faculty wanting to have radio shows than available time slots.
Avatar 11:09am northguineahills:

yeah, what bobdc said. I think it went back to the stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Hmmm. The talkover track I just played started with the fellow saying, "Hay Mabrey, why don't you play the organ, man?" And that's the name of the song. Did you not hear that?
Avatar 11:12am Carmichael:

Good morning, Doug and Drumheads.
Avatar 11:12am northguineahills:

W/ no outlet, my friends did pirate radio until they got busted by the FCC after 2 years in operation. It was a mobile station as well.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13am Brian in UK:

Carmichael, your wheels?
Avatar 11:13am northguineahills:

It cut right as he started talking.
Avatar 🥁 11:13am bobdc:

I did not hear that. I did just hear a sudden switch from an afrobeat-sounding thing to a more Ethio-jazz groove.
Avatar 11:14am Cecile:

I think there is so much emphasis on personal communication and having ones own "personal brand" that it's hard to get people collaborating. Also, to listen to radio you have to put the reins in someone else's hands. That's getting taught as being a bad thing.
Avatar 11:14am northguineahills:

The music on the stream and the playlist don't match.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

OH shite! It DID kick back to the stream. Thank you bobdc and NGH for tipping me off. I am always the last to know. I bet none of you heard my mic break. When the stream kicked it, it went to an Art Ensemble of Chicago cut, which you must have assumed was something I was playing. We are back online with Fitz Gore...

Sorrry everyone. I guess the universe didn't like my crack about inanimate objects.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15am Alex In Illinois:

Of course my favorite college radio station story that of WFMU, where the radio station outlived the college.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:15am Uncle Michael:

The station was more important than the college.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:16am Andrew Waterloo:

Our local college station went to a user support public radio format, but the programming is incredibly bland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

All blessings to Jeff Moore, the tech director at WFMU. He has all us streaming DJs making local recordings our shows in FLAC form so we can post higher-quality archives. This also means that the archives will be complete, without the stream drop-outs.
Avatar 11:16am Van in DC:

The universe object'ed
Avatar 11:16am Carmichael:

Brian, those aren't my wheels, they belong to Yusuf Islam, who's proudly displaying them.
Avatar 11:16am ndbob:

@Alex I went to U of M for one of my graduate programs, but I don't remember what the campus station was like at that time.
Avatar 🥁 11:17am bobdc:

I'll look forward to hearing that mic break!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Just got knocked off again, but I was ready for it this time. Fuck YOU, physical universe!
Avatar 11:19am Carmichael:

I worked at Liz Berg's alma mater, UC Davis, but did not work for the station KDVS like she did. Totally freeform, totally cool.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am Alex In Illinois:

@ndbob: Neither do most present-day Terrapin students and faculty. My sister did not know that they had a radio station until I sought it out
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:20am Brian in UK:

Carmichael, ah yes ofcourse I see the door poster. No traditional dress anymore. Steven not you.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am Uncle Michael:

Hinky Dinky Time has a strict studio dress code.
Avatar 11:23am ndbob:

@Alex I do know someone though who worked at the station in the early 70s
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:23am Alex In Illinois:

There is a sort of Commuter university in Chicago, Northeaster Illinois U, that had a good freeform station WZRD, but then strange things started happing to that place - the whole university.
  11:24am Dean:

Took me a while to take to Coursil's Trails of Tears. Good to hear more from his work.
  11:24am Pascal:

Greetings all, thanks for the music Doug!

Allow me to chime in self-servingly and vouch for the quality of WCBN at U of M...
Avatar 11:24am Carmichael:

I did, however, start my high school radio station, which was the extreme end of freeform: chaos. And I volunteer DJ'ed at a local community radio station for nearly 20 years, playing a retro show much like Fool's Paradise, but without all the whizz bang effects Rex is known for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Doug Schulkind:

Are y'all ready to "Do the Pig." Just put your hands on your ham, and...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Stanley:

Avatar 11:25am Van in DC:

Now you're cookin' Doug. In fact, you're bacon
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:26am Brian in UK:

I'm going to do the Beagle Walk. Nose to the ground, ass in the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya Carmichae, Dean and Pascal! WCBN is a great station. Our own Ken Freedman and Rob Weisberg (and also I believe listener Cecile) are ex-WCBN deejays.
Avatar 11:27am still b/p:

Someone let me sample their bacon fried rice last night. What a world, what a world.
Avatar 11:27am Cecile:

Yep, Doug is right. Also Katie Gentile from Transpacific Sound Paradise.
Avatar 11:27am Carmichael:

WCBN is at the U of which "M"??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

Mmmmm bacon. Thanks, Van!
Avatar 11:28am Cecile:

The REAL M. MICHIGAN. hahahhahaha
  11:28am Dean:

"sample their bacon fried rice"--As they say, is that what the kids are calling it these days?
  11:30am Hechicero:

Capsula! Cool. This guys are from Argentina
Avatar 11:30am Cecile:

I might have to "borrow" Do The Pig if I like it. I am making a little movie about an adventurous piggy bank. In pre-production stills, I have him eating breakfast - a tiny bowl filled with loose change, and I made him a little bed. Yeah, I'm weird. Shooting starts soon with a budget of $0.00.
  11:30am Pascal:

Cecile, when did you do a show? I've been there for about five years now and it's definitely helping me stay human in grad school.

Also, we all take pride in our WFMU connections...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Any like to to a guess as to what WFMU stands for? (I actually don't know.)

Where Faeries Mulch Unobviously?
  11:31am Hechicero:

Oops. Wrong playlist.
Avatar 11:31am Cecile:

1983-87, Pascal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

Hola, Hechicero! You are on the wrong playlist. You wanna be here: wfmu.org...
  11:31am Dean:

What frequency modulations, Uncle?
Avatar 11:31am Cecile:

I think Frank Uhle and Arwulf might still remember me.
  11:31am Hugo:

Intriguing, this Coursil record. Not really what you expected, knowing the BYG Actuel releases.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32am Uncle Michael:

Frequency Modulated Upsala?
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

I like this Jacques Coursil.
Avatar 11:33am Carmichael:

@Cecile: I was thinking "Moldavia". :)
Avatar 11:34am still b/p:

No code involved in the dish reference, dean....but it sure as hell has to do with consequence-be-damned, pleasure-receptor indulgence and payoff for all ages.
Avatar 11:34am Cecile:

that would be awesome, Carm, but no.
Avatar 11:34am Van in DC:

This is one instance when you are more than welcome to give us all the FLAC you can
  11:34am Pascal:

Arwulf is still going strong. By the way, this link might be of interest to the drummer somers! An online archive of WCBN's Cornbelt Symphony from the late 70s: "scratchy records, in whatever condition we found them, broadcast over a college station, recorded off-the-air on cheap machines using cheap cassettes, stored for 35 years, then ripped to an mp3 file with almost no audio filtering or other post-processing"

http://markhardin.com/CornbeltSite/

Perfect song. I will have to work that in there.

Hey, the Merced Blue Notes are actually from Merced! A small farming town about 50 miles from here down hwy 99. Neva hoid of 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

WFMU used to run tapes of Arwulf's show on the air. I loved that show. Somewhere in the bowels of WFMU is a huge cardboard box filed with cassettes of the Arwulf show.

@Carmichael
They moved to Detroit at one point...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:42am Brian in UK:

You cookin' Doug, you cookin'.
Great weekend everone.
Avatar 11:43am Cecile:

See, and that record might have been played in Merced on top 40 radio. The chain radio stations, as I call them, have lost that.
  11:43am Dean:

Merced is evolving, now that the shiny new UC campus is up and running. It's now a small-ish town.
Avatar 11:43am Cecile:

you too, Brian!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Stanley:

What Brian said.

Shlater all.
  11:45am Pascal:

Is WFMU an appropriate four letter word?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of cooking, Brian in UK, I am making pizza tonight. A caramelized onion and yukon gold potato pie!
Avatar 11:48am Carmichael:

@Dean, I came close to transferring my UC job there, but got a better offer from the gubmint. My daughters are considering going to school there.
Avatar 11:49am Cecile:

OH! This is a great track. Duane introduced me to this song.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am Brian in UK:

Wow, Doug that sounds massive. Red or white onions?
Avatar 11:50am Van in DC:

and lots of bacon? mmmmm bacon pizza mmmmm
  11:51am Dean:

@Carmichael, It's a lean and mean campus, and a clean-slate experiment in innovative higher education. Much (most?) of the library collection is electronic, for instance. I think they're gunning for a medical school sometime soon.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am Brian in UK:

Amanda Nazario will be filling in at midnight tonight over on the WFMU Mothership! (She will also be filling in for Dave the Spazz on the Mothership on June 26.)

There will be NO Give the Drummer Some next Friday. I will be attending my daughter's "promotion" (as they call middle school graduation) ceremony. The great Gary Sullivan of Bodega Pop Live will be filling in for me next Friday!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Doug Schulkind:

I have been using prosciutto on my pizzas. Very much like bacon, but a little less overpowering. Still very bacon-y, though.
