Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:18pm common:

excited about this film!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:19pm TDK60:

I saw Moondog as a child a few times, standing selling his music in Midtown.
Wed. 5/28/14 3:22pm The Brooklyn Kid:

Actually never heard of moondog
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:23pm Ike:

Wow, TDK60@3:08, I missed that. I bet those were just about the most relaxed, conversational voices on KCR in years. Heh.
Wed. 5/28/14 3:23pm The Brooklyn Kid:

Philip glass now there is a name I know
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:25pm common:

that's pretty great, tdk60!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:26pm Jeremy N:

Sam Ulano actually passed away earlier this year on January 2.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:29pm TDK60:

Ike, yes their voices were sonically pleasing.
  Wed. 5/28/14 3:34pm Alison Porchnik:

This is such beautiful music. Like a music box.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:34pm Irwin:

Didn't know about Sam's passing. He was over 90. Hopefully providing a swinging beat behind the heavenly choir
  Wed. 5/28/14 3:38pm Holly Elson:

So sad to hear about Sam Ulano
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:39pm Monica:

"high on a rocky ledge," a sentimental fave.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:39pm common:

never heard "high on a rocky ledge". beautiful!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:50pm Aharon:

This is great music. I just realized with embarrassment that I'd always unconsciously conflated Tiny Tim and Moondog. For shame!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:56pm Jeremy N:

Very much enjoying the show and very much looking forward to the film! I've been fanatical about Moondog since finding "& his Friends" and the Brunswick release in a box of 10"s over 25 years ago...hit me like a missive from the gods.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 3:56pm Webhamster Henry:

Nice harp piece - I should get it for my daughter to play. Where do you get his scores?
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:00pm Ellen T:

Don't mean to barge in on a tangent, but I wanted to share that I had a personal encounter with Moondog. I am 63 years old and this happened probably when I was about 7. I was walking with my parents on 6th Ave. being a little wise guy, running ahead of them to show my independence. I was suddenly "accosted" and kind of swooped up snd carried along by a man wearing a cloak and Viking head dress. He made me feel I had left the world I was in entirely, and he surrounded me with an energy that felt, to my young self, both terrifying and sublime simultaneously. After walking some steps together, he broke off, and there were my parents, laughing. My father said, "you know who that was, don't you?" Which of course, I did not. "That was Moondog!" I was so incredulous that my father would know about someone like this -- he gave me the sense that this was not any run of the mill street person, but someone quite extraordinary. As I said, I am 63, and this experience has always remained exceptionally vivid, even though it was many years before I connected the dots, and realized who Moondog was.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:02pm rrg:

I love that story, Ellen.
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:05pm Laura L:

What rrg said, me too.
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:12pm eventi:

Ellen - That gave me chills - Thanks
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:15pm Ellen T:

He made some kind of noise, too. At first I was so frightened. He had this blustery, fierceness, and a real seriousness, as if to say, I'm not fooling around here. But it was as if I met an actual magical being. It's nice to share this. I rarely talk about it. I will go to the website and tell the story to the documentarians.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:16pm Webhamster Henry:

"Cherie, Cherie you look like Gene Autry, your fig're is like Trigger, my cherie" -- same tune, abused lyrics from Spike Jones
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:21pm Holly Elson:

Brilliant story Ellen thanks for sharing!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:26pm Stevel:

Thanks, Ellen. Wow.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:27pm northguineahills:

wowwow, Ellen, just Wow! That's awesome!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:27pm chris:

This is really quite nice. Hauntingly beautiful, I'd say. Thanks for sharing his works with us today.

  Wed. 5/28/14 4:29pm Holly Elson:

Here's the New York Times piece I mentioned by Allan Kozinn http://ow.ly/xmCm4
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:29pm Ellen T:

I wish my dad was still alive so I could ask him how he knew who Moondog was, and that he was so special. I mean, I thought I had left the earth, and there were my parents some steps behind, just watching the whole thing -- with no fear for the safety of their little girl. Hard to imagine that happening in the world of today.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:29pm chris:

Wow, Ellen! Thanks for sharing that! So cool.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:33pm Carmichael:

Wow, I walked into a ton of Moondog. Hi everyone.
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:39pm Ellen T:

Thank you everyone, for being so receptive!!!!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:40pm MikeY:

the first show i miss in weeks and it has moondog, My father was fascinated by his poetry and music, I think I have a phto with him and my old man in it.
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:41pm Ellen T:

I think one of the things my dad said was, "he's been around for a loooong time" and I thought he meant like hundreds of years!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:45pm northguineahills:

Enjoyed the Jerome Cooper. Wasn't familiar w/ him.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:45pm rrg:

A superb segment, Irwin (and Holly). Thanks.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:48pm rrg:

And, you see, things like this isolated Karen Carpenter track are what keep me coming back to Irwin's program.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:48pm rrg:

Where did it come from?
  Wed. 5/28/14 4:51pm PMD:

Only got the tail end of Moondog, darn it. Will go back and listen. But really like this Karen Carpenter track!~
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:51pm Irwin:

rrg: no recollection, had it for years.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:54pm rrg:

These days, I imagine--though I've never tried--that with only a little bit of software, one can do these sorts of isolations on one's own.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:54pm Dan:

It's fate baby it's faate
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:56pm Webhamster Henry:

@rrg not as cleanly -- but you can fix things in a mix you aren't too closely listening to.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 4:59pm rrg:

Right. Even that mostly-isolated Karen track that Irwin played still had a fair bit of bleed-through with Richard's voice in it.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:00pm Dan:

I'll bleed you! (not in an aggressive way)
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:02pm Dan:

oh... sun ra!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:08pm Dan:

What's a good sun ra track where he speaks? I got a book of his poems, but couldn't find music to match it.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:10pm Dan:

I've been enjoying lanquidity
  Wed. 5/28/14 5:15pm spodiodi:

Yes
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@northguineahills - Did you ever get tickets for the US/Turkey soccer match? More tickets went on sale today, according to ussoccer.com web site.
  Wed. 5/28/14 5:16pm berbo:

that is a thing that I don't want to catch.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:18pm Dan:

please make this noise stop
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:20pm northguineahills:

I saw that Ken. I haven't been to the site yet today. Thanks for reminding me!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:31pm Dan:

Butter products!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:32pm Dan:

I'd feel pretty bad to be honest.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:33pm Dan:

can we send this guy some butter?
  Wed. 5/28/14 5:35pm ?:

This has been a solid show, cheers Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:36pm chris:

Silly English Kaaaanigits!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:38pm Carmichael:

Damn phone calls. I missed an important message re: butter.
  Wed. 5/28/14 5:38pm Dean:

More Wigwam!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:38pm rrg:

I agree with ?.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:38pm chris:

i really like people who say F-you and then thanks very much. Politeness is so hard to teach these days.
Wed. 5/28/14 5:38pm nobunny ever here:

...maybe if you got butter over there you'd get the international Nobel Grease Prize...
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:42pm northguineahills:

Like Madder Rose better on their demo.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:45pm Irwin:

Thanks to rrg for this one.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:46pm Carmichael:

Thanks, rrg. Friends of yours?
  Wed. 5/28/14 5:47pm iris:

I missed the name of this tune. What is it?
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:47pm rrg:

"Nashville" cast members.
  Wed. 5/28/14 5:48pm iris:

Very nice! It complimented my stew perfectly.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 5:49pm dale:

  Wed. 5/28/14 5:51pm iris:
