The Glass House Project: Lost Hungarian Jewish Music Reimagined

Hear this show now: | Add or read comments

The Holocaust in Hungary was especially efficient thanks to government cooperation. But there were exceptions, including a few dozen safe houses set up for Jews in Budapest. The Glass House was one of them - and the The Glass House Project is an all-star Hungarian-American musical collaboration led by Frank London (of Klezmatics fame). Frank and company are using archival sources as a launching pad to pay hommage to the Jewish musical culture lost in the Holocaust in Hungary - creating new and adventurous arrangements of the old songs and a few new ones too.

The inspired ensemble hits the stage for free concerts at the Museum of Jewish Heritage near Battery Park in New York City on Tuesday May 27 and at the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage on Wednesday May 28 - as well as making its first-ever radio appearance right here on WFMU.

Big thanks to the Balassi Institute and Enormous thanks to our illustrious volunteer engineer Glenn Luttman and assistants Andrew and Jon!

(hi Katie! and kitties! from "my" kitties and me!)
Avatar Sat. 5/24/14 8:41pm Rob W:

Thanks Slugluv! Thanks Davex. I will say though - Germany does have something we don't have over here, which is a mainstream world music radio service, WDR's Funkhaus Europa - we really don't have anything like that in the US.
Avatar Sat. 5/24/14 8:50pm davex:

Rob, true, but not in this part of Germany, at least not terrestrially. Of course, that doesn't matter that much anymore, and I've got WFMU online myself, so I can't complain!
