Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 6:55pm Gary:

Dave and Michael, welcome! Be right back with some fresh coffee ...
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 6:55pm Uncle Michael:

My mucho-talented costumer sister just costumed a Bollywood film, shot in L.A., which I guess isn't that uncommon anymore.
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 6:56pm listener james from westwood:

I will take this show as my launching (lunching?) point for exploring the Indian joints around this year's record fair locale....
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 6:58pm listener james from westwood:

I'm already whistling "Mera Naam" (SP) in anticipation.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 6:58pm glenn:

guess whose birthdays are today?
hint: one is the crack music lover behind give the drummer radio.
the other is the crack smoking crackpot who runs my city.
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 6:59pm ndbob:

Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 6:59pm hyde:

Another happy birthday to the mensch at the helm of GTDR!
  Wed. 5/28/14 7:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Butt cracks abound, glenn!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:05pm ndbob:

Right Glenn - she's gotten a lot of tributes today

Gary....yes, I'll still be up. Talk to later.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:11pm Gary:

Here's a poster for Maya Macchindra: upload.wikimedia.org...
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:13pm Gary:

K.L. Saigal was a huge superstar -- Lata Mangeshkar says that, as a girl, she dreamed of marrying him. Good thing she didn't: He was also quite the alcoholic
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:16pm Gary:

Some of K.L. Saigal's biggest later hits were composed by this guy, Pankaj Mullick ... but here he is in his own voice
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:24pm Gary:

DW Griffith was the guy whose name slipped my mind
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:24pm davex:

Fascinating early stuff, Gary. That poster is by the way actually for the later Telugu film of the same name (hence the Telugu writing, which looks quite different).
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:25pm Gary:

Oh, thanks, good catch, Dave
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:28pm Gary:

This song is from Raj Kapoor's first film, before he teamed up with Shankar & Jaikishan
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:30pm ndbob:

This is great Gary - haven't heard very much of this early material
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:30pm davex:

I wonder how many actors ever sang in their own films, something that does not happen very much if at all today.
  Wed. 5/28/14 7:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Gary, my mom listened to one of my radio shows back when I was in college. On that show, I played this long, amazing nadaswaram duet, and she hated it. She never tuned in again, and that was back in 1980.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:31pm Gary:

Everyone did in the 30s and part of the 40s, Dave
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:32pm Gary:

@Doug: She knew what she liked (and didn't) :)
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:34pm hyde:

this is great, I don't know any of this stuff at all. I'm reminded that I have seen far, far too few Bollywood movies. (True confession: the only Bollywood movie I've watched this year was Veerana: Vengeance of the Vampire)
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:34pm davex:

Thanks, Gary - an early case of modern specialization, apparently.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:36pm Gary:

Some of the people who went on to be big actors: Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis (who was more of a character actor, but ubiquitous) both sang their own stuff in the early 40s -- I was gonna play some, but decided to dial the dork factor down a wee bit :)
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:36pm Gary:

Hyde, I need to see that vampire movie!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:38pm davex:

And there are so many movies out there to see...
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:39pm davex:

this playlist can double as a must-see list, I suppose.
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:39pm listener james from westwood:

You could spend some time viewing the films from just 1 decade!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:40pm Gary:

I can vouch for all of the films in this particular set, Dave, definitely
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:40pm hyde:

@Gary it's pretty entertaining. It has great sets and creepy lighting. Has a Bappi Lahiri soundtrack, too. Supposedly the Ramsay brothers are remaking it in 3D.
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:42pm listener james from westwood:

heh, i recognize that bed music!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:47pm hyde:

ah, finally here's one I know. love that Geeta Dutt.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:47pm Gary:

Sounds awesome, Hyde -- where did you find it?
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:49pm Gary:

This one goes out to Doug -- happy birthday!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:51pm hyde:

@Gary I got the disk from Netflix. Mondo Macabro put it out a couple years ago. They've remastered for DVD a few other Bollywood horror flicks over the years, but this is the first one I've seen. I need to get to work on some of the others....
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:52pm davex:

It's easy to find many of these films on YouTube, but few of them seem to have subtitles.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:52pm Gary:

Thanks, I'll see if Netflix Streaming has it, too!
  Wed. 5/28/14 7:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Where's the "like" button on this thing?
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 7:59pm Gary:

Have a great night, Bob!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:00pm Gary:

Coming up, one of my all-time favorite duets ....
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:01pm davex:

I will need to call it an "early" night myself, and will definitely be heading for the archives very soon. Thanks, Gary, good night everyone - and hope you get a like button for your birthday, Doug.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:03pm Gary:

See you soon, Dave!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:04pm listener james from westwood:

Stellar stuff thus far!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:05pm Gary:

Glad you're enjoying, James!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:06pm forestriver:

This is awesome. I've been obsessed with bollywood since I saw some incredible music videos at a surprisingly good indian restaurant in Rapid City, SD. Thanks for the exposé
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:07pm Gary:

Welcome, Forestriver!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:09pm listener james from westwood:

The funny thing is, most of the Indian restaurants I've been to in NJ play not Bollywood tunes but schmaltzy Subcontinent-influenced piano-driven Muzak. I'd gladly go for the music videos!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:11pm forestriver:

I'll drop a link to one of the ones I saw here: www.youtube.com...
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:13pm listener james from westwood:

Thanks!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:14pm forestriver:

You're welcome. It's seriously pop music, but an interesting story and sound nonetheless
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:15pm Gary:

I'll take a look after the show, ForestRiver -- thanks!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:18pm Uncle Michael:

This is pretty.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:19pm Gary:

You wouldn't think so from this song, Michael, but the film is devastatingly depressing (in a good way, though)
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:23pm Gary:

The scene in which this song appears involves a dwarf, guys in "Latin" costumes and a whip
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:23pm northguineahills:

Forgot to say, Hello. Hello, Gary!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:24pm Gary:

Well, howdy, NGH!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:26pm Gary:

While I can't strongly recommend this film, I can totally completely and absolutely assure you that you'll more than enjoy this scene if you look it up on YouTube
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:26pm listener james from westwood:

Kishore!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:27pm hyde:

I always imagine that I'll get some reading done during this show, and then I spend three hours googling stuff I hear
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:37pm Gary:

I think I included this song on this Bollywood comp I put together for the blog: bodegapop.blogspot.com...
  Wed. 5/28/14 8:43pm !.!:

Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:44pm Gary:

Howdy, !.!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:49pm listener james from westwood:

Love love love this cut!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:50pm listener james from westwood:

Once again, I have no idea where I'd have ever first heard Bollywood cuts famous and obscure if I hadn't been introduced to WFMU. (Maybe in the opening credits of "Ghost World," but I'm not sure I would've seen that film had I not been an FMU lis'ner.)
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:55pm Ike:

Just got here. "Duniya Mein" -- what a song -- supremely bonkers beyond belief!
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 8:56pm Gary:

Hola, Ike -- come on in, more bonking gonna happen!
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:59pm hyde:

I'm pro whips and tunnels of pink foam, myself
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

You should visit my basement.
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 9:01pm listener james from westwood:

Wasn't that a Patton Oswalt bit, Uncle Michael's Naked Pink Foam Basement?

Been here the whole time, but I'm still indulging in post-Memorial day cleaning, and I didn't even have any guests.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 9:21pm Gary:

This is not an attempt at a bad joke, but I honestly don't remember what I did on Memorial Day
Avatar    Wed. 5/28/14 9:22pm listener james from westwood:

I nursed a cold and proofread an unintelligible book.
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 9:25pm Gary:

The film this song is from was a knock-off of Streets of Fire
Avatar Wed. 5/28/14 9:26pm Gary:

Oh, right; I remember now. I applied for unemployment and helped my GF plant tomatoes on the balcony
