Hey there Gary and everyone!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 6:56pm Gary:

Heya, Bob!
  Wed. 5/21/14 6:59pm Jill B.:

Hi Gary and NDBob! Gary, received the postcard about the WFMU music fair. Is that your art work????
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:00pm Gary:

Hi Mom! No, I'm not sure who did that -- will have to find it and see
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:00pm ndbob:

Heya Jill!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:00pm davex:

Hi Gary, ndbob, Jill - looking forward to some more obscurity!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:01pm Gary:

Howdy, Dave!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:02pm ndbob:

Heya Dave!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:04pm northguineahills:

Most of the obscurameter stuff I looked up I got an obscure rating of 0%, but it should have been null set, as they had no record of any of the artists I looked up (I did that on purpose).
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:04pm hyde:

why is a raven like a writing desk?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:06pm Gary:

NGH + Hyde! Welcome!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:06pm Gary:

I was surprised by the things I assumed would be 90% or greater, but weren't.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:07pm northguineahills:

...and I also second Gary's belief it's queries LastFM's database.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:07pm davex:

Great track to start, actually. Quite an interesting sound.
  Wed. 5/21/14 7:07pm Jill B.:

Okay, Hyde, what is he answer, as I have no clue.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:09pm davex:

Yes, it definitely goes through Last.fm. But it still gives a general sense of what people listen to (and a lot of people "scrobble" their own music through the site). Of course it's all just for fun.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:11pm hyde:

@Jill B I don't know! the Mad Hatter asks this riddle during the tea party in Alice in Wonderland, but he never gives the darn answer...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:12pm Gary:

@Hyde: How about: Poe wrote on both
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:13pm Gary:

I almost used Alice in Wonderland imagery for this show, actually, Hyde (think: rabbit hole)
  Wed. 5/21/14 7:14pm Jill B.:

Hyde.....Well, let's just make up an answer then!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:14pm hyde:

@Gary yes. I also think Lewis Carroll finally came up with some slightly lame answer because people bugged him about it for so long....
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:17pm hyde:

only one of the 7 bands I was in even comes up in the obscurometer, and i think that's because they've kept going for like 15 years after i stopped playing with them
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:18pm davex:

100%: Jackpot!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:20pm Gary:

What were the bands, Hyde?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:21pm pacific standard simon:

What's shakin', baby?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:23pm davex:

Hey Simon!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:25pm pacific standard simon:

Yo davex! Doubling down on the drummer stream today.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:26pm davex:

Can't go wrong...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:26pm Gary:

Simon! Booty's shakin
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:27pm pacific standard simon:

And my head is achin'.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:29pm hyde:

@Gary I think I miscounted--there was 8. they were: The Household Appliances, The Insane Assholes, Chore Wheel, The Half Worcesters, The Corn Lords, Triple Thick, Rodentt and Jumbo. There's really only tapes of everything except Rodentt, the bad lounge band I was in, we had a 45. (except Triple Thick, who still play). Jumbo was my 40+ piece circus music project. I have .wav files of our tapes somewhere that I guess someday I should convert to .mp3...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:31pm Gary:

You should definitely convert them. I'd love to hear some of this
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:31pm pacific standard simon:

If the writing desk is the old roll-top type, I suppose the similarity could be that they're both corvid.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:35pm ndbob:

this is great Gary - the Mimi Sisters
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:35pm pacific standard simon:

Sorry.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:36pm davex:

That was one warped answer, Simon. (But ingeniously warped.)
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:37pm hyde:

@Gary careful what you wish for! there was actually a Jumbo 45 too, and it looks like one of the many, many members of the band uploaded it to.....myspace? myspace.com...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:38pm Gary:

I should also say that a certain amount of today's stuff came to me via Carol -- she sent me a few discs a few weeks back ... in fact, this song and the song before it I think were among the treasures she sent along
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:39pm pacific standard simon:

Making vile puns is not helping this headache.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:43pm pacific standard simon:

I've never heard (or heard of) any of this stuff, Gary. That's not a problem in my world.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:50pm hyde:

i loved that Aris San awhile back. reading about him, his life sounds kind of crazy! now I want to see that movie about him.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:51pm Gary:

Yes! We definitely all gotta track down that movie, it sounds awesome
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:52pm Gary:

I"ve played Josie Ho before. I'm shocked at her obscurity level. She's a very popular movie star / producer / singer in Hong Kong. I even typed in her name in Chinese and still got an above 90% obscurity rating for her.
  Wed. 5/21/14 7:53pm juan-gotama:

LOL, this is Josie Ho 何超儀, daughter of Stanley Ho Hung Sun, "The King of Gambling" of Macau.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:54pm Gary:

You are correct, Juan-Gotama! I super-heart this woman -- I have three or four of her albums.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:54pm Gary:

Pappy's the richest man in Macau, if I'm not mistaken
  Wed. 5/21/14 7:55pm juan-gotama:

This is not obscure at all for any cantonese speaker growing up in the '90s. The obscurity level is due to the fact that Chinese music listeners use last.fm less frequently I think.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:55pm hyde:

looks like someone uploaded that Aris San flick to youtube, but there's no english subs. from the way it opens it sure looks like it's probably worth watching even if it's greek to me: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:55pm pacific standard simon:

Behind her back, her friends call her a ho.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:56pm Gary:

Ho, ho, ho
  Wed. 5/21/14 7:57pm juan-gotama:

Yeah although slightly less powerful as he used to be, pappy still a tycoon in Macau no doubt!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! Catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:58pm Gary:

True, Juan -- for instance, I was thinking of playing Naseebo Lal, the single most popular singer in Pakistan right now -- she had an obscurity rating of 93.8%
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:59pm Gary:

Have a great night, Bob!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 7:59pm davex:

Obscurity is all a matter of perspective in the end.

top o the eve all
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:01pm pacific standard simon:

In other words, how many of these bands have heard of YOU?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:03pm hyde:

hey, i need like 5 minutes of silence in between songs so i can do research before i hear something else i need to research. also, that d mingus was really bizarre. (in a good way)
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:06pm Gary:

Hyde, I think you can get the album the D Mingus is from free on Bandcamp ...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:06pm Gary:

Oh, and Howdy, Gildo-X!
  Wed. 5/21/14 8:10pm Gildo-X:

I've finally actually read your email in time to listen...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:10pm Holly in NC:

Hello Gary & everyone! xo
Sadly I'm not really here, will have to catch up later.

Gary, I hope you've had a good week.
  Wed. 5/21/14 8:12pm Jill B.:

Holly! Maybe next week?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:12pm davex:

Case in point: Oum Kalthoum is at 82.3%. Of course the alternative spellings play a role as well.

@Gary yep, it looks like you can Link for reference's sake: is.gd...)
(hi Holly...)
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:13pm Gary:

Holly! Don't make us cry! ... my week was okay, mostly going to various healthcare professionals to do checkups before my insurance runs out at the end of the month
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:13pm pacific standard simon:

Well shootabasket, Holly!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:14pm Gary:

@Dave, yes -- also, Jintara, who I just played a bit ago, is like the most popular morlam singer in Thailand right now.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:18pm Gary:

This comes from a comp that Mr Fab put together for his Music for Maniacs blog: musicformaniacs.blogspot.com...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:19pm davex:

Köstlich!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:19pm hyde:

there are a *lot* of Jintara Poonlap videos on youtube
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Just got home. What'd I miss?!?!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:26pm pacific standard simon:

@Gary - I'm downloading some fado music from Portugal -- if I find something awesome, I'll share it with you.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:26pm Gary:

Doug! You missed me trying to find African songs you hadn't already played and mostly failing miserably
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:27pm hyde:

@Doug ah, you know. brazilian folk/new wave, german go go, israeli greek surf music. that sort of thing.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:28pm davex:

Doug, no idea, it was all so obscure...
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:29pm Doug Schulkind:

I've heard of camera obscura, but radio obscuro is better!
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:30pm Gary:

WFMU: The Camera Obscura of Radio

Who needs Child Protection Services? I thought WFMU was family-friendly
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:38pm Gary:

@Doca, well *someone* has to save us from that kid
  Wed. 5/21/14 8:40pm doca:

Hahaha kids are a major nuisance sometimes. Vinícius de Moraes has a song in which he says that then the schools are out he even thinks "Herodes was a nice guy"

Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:51pm hyde:

i'm still stuck on Arda Kardes. who is this kid?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:53pm Gary:

I'm too scared to look around on the internet right now Hyde, for fear I'll step onto a page that has an automatic video or sound file, or I'd help with the research
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:58pm hyde:

I've found some hypothesizing that he was the kid of some Turkish psych guy or something, but I don't know if that's at all accurate. i also found him doing a cover of the Doors' "Mosquito", which is cuh-razy. it seems to be early seventies stuff, near as I can tell.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 8:58pm Gary:

I *believe* these women are singing in Maori, but if anyone can find info to the contrary, please lemme konw!

I'll have to put it into my computer after the show and see!

A friend just picked up a copy of What You Want Is In The Limo.
I'm psyched to read it.
Does the title refer to the Bowie song Fame?
(is that a stupid question?)
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 9:51pm hyde:

@Doug heh, that's no shock!

Anyway, Gary, thank you for coloring the mix of my afternoon/evening. Always a wild, wild show.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 9:53pm pacific standard simon:

And how does d.francis keep doing that?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 9:54pm davex:

How can that have been three hours?
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 9:55pm Gary:

Wasn't planning to play this The News song, but I see I undershot the timing tonight ... alas, their obscurity rating isn't available via obscurometer ... THAT'S JUST HOW OBSCURE THEY ARE.
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 9:56pm davex:

This is the absolute best!

If I was going to name a record label after this radio show, I'd call it Sublime Constantly.

Sorry, Doug playing something doesn't mean it's not obscure :)
Avatar Wed. 5/21/14 10:01pm Gary:
