I myself over the years gave gone by about 20 different online names
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:08pm northguineahills:

Oh, it's an old Unky Morty composition. Nice.

Mn Jeff outdid himself this time!
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:09pm Hal:

This makes me want to stare quizzically at a monolith.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:13pm Hugh Janus:

This was really the only logical segue out of the Elliman.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:14pm Dean:

Uh, "Hal," that would be Ligeti, I'm afraid.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:16pm Cory:

The only out of Elliman is a 180. Nice driving, Kurt.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:22pm paula pc:

this is beautiful, Kurt -- thank you.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:22pm Hal:

Are you the one that bought it in 2010, Dean? I'm envious. It looks cool. Wait a minute ... 2010 ... the irony ... Scheider!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:22pm ranjit:

I'm going to Minnesota next month! I'm hoping I will run in to Minnesota Jeff - I will recognize him, of course, by his compact yet compelling animation loops.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:24pm Mike East:

ICE did a rehearsal here last month
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:24pm Dean:

No, I've had it for decades, probably picked it up at a thrift store or library sale. Funny thing is I didn't realize what it was until I spun it and heard the familiar tune familiarly performed.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

good afternoon, everyone! thanks for joining me.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:26pm Mark Helsten:

Thanks for having us!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:27pm BDR:

Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:34pm common:

this is so perfect for the monsoon-like weather here. at least we don't have any fire tornados...yet.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:35pm Cumulo Nimbus:

That storm tracker graphic seems fairly accurate!
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:37pm Dean:

Wedged somewhere between the Beaudoin and the King Crimson I wouldn't mind hearing Gidon Kremer's Kremerata Baltica recording of Vladimir Martynov's "Come In!" It's sappy, but in a good way.
Fri. 5/16/14 3:39pm Barber David Seville:

Cripes, I'm so sappy I'd settle for the Adagio right now.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:39pm ranjit:

ARHG those high tones
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:40pm Dean:

Barber's, Barber?
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:40pm Aural Roberts:

That Yoshehide is frying my stirrups.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:41pm Dean:

Buddy of mine once compiled a recording of all of the Lindsay Quartet's slow movements from the Beethoven SQs. Phenomenal.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:44pm Mark Helsten:

yeah... those high tones are going to make me do something i regret... Through earphones anyway!
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:46pm Jim Feedbacchus:

Love Hertz!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:46pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ha!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:47pm ranjit:

yeah yeah
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:47pm northguineahills:

I love Flutter. This was the album that converted me to Otomo's New Jazz Quartet when I just dug him at the time as a turntabilist.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:48pm northguineahills:

That's Sachiko M on the high frequency sine wave tones. I love it!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:49pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i pretty much love everything otomo does.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:51pm paula pc:

this show is hitting hard on all fronts -- and then you bring in the Fela!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:52pm Kurt Gottschalk:

we've only just begun, ppc, we've only just begun.
Fri. 5/16/14 3:53pm Pud from Bazooka:

Digital remix is bringing those maracas forward.
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:54pm marmalade kittens:

Get down with your bad selves
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:57pm Kurt Gottschalk:

kittens, are you kitty?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:58pm Kurt Gottschalk:

well i guess it's time for the legal i.d. but i guess there's six minutes left in this song. i guess bryce went over. i guess it's his fault. i guess i'm operating in violation of fcc standards now, but it's not my fault!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 3:59pm common:

great noises!
  Fri. 5/16/14 3:59pm Clay:

C'mon Kurt ... talk OVER the music.
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:00pm Clay:

people like that
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:00pm Hip-O:

Get in a rut, grease it, and stay there. Just groove.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:00pm Kurt Gottschalk:

talk OVER the music?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:00pm Kurt Gottschalk:

like on TOP?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:01pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i can't talk over music that's going the right speed!
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:01pm Hip-O:

Funktional
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:03pm Dean:

I dunno, this tune seems pretty slow. I mean, if it was released in '77 it sure has taken a long time to get here.
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:04pm Clay:

You should talk up the ramp of every song until the lyrics come in unless there are no lyrics, then just talk all the time. People love that. Music isn't so important as your personality.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:04pm Santos L Halper:

Happy Fela Friday, Kurt and all!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:09pm Kurt Gottschalk:

clay, come be on my show someday serious.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:13pm Caryn:

Oh look, Rush documentary on tv... I think I'll pass.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:14pm common:

clay, you should join kurt some day. that would be great!
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:14pm Clay:

I'd love that, Kurt. DUEL! Name the date. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIP-yvV3uxQ @Caryn - That Rush doc is great "Beyond The Lighted Stage" Don't miss it!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:15pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ha! we'd better wait and make sure i still have a show first!
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:16pm Clay:

Me, too. My Arbies are in the cellar.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:19pm Caryn:

@Clay: I love one of the directors' other work, but it's a choice between the doc or Scorcese on the other channel, and Marty wins.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:20pm Mark Helsten:

I missed the Kurt talky bit. Damn work getting in the way of my radio experiences!!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:20pm common:

I'm gonna watch that rush doc! caryn, which scorcese?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:21pm Carmichael:

Nice choice, Caryn. I loathe Rush more intensely than Doug Schulkind loathes Paul Simon. Loathe wars!!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:21pm Kurt Gottschalk:

oh, all's i said was that rush is awesome because they're canadian.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:23pm Mark Helsten:

The Rush doc is fascinating actually. I am Canadian though. Not a Rush fan, per sey,... it is just a really well done music doc. I would say the same about some kind of monster (metallica) and the Anvil one though. Judge me on that.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:25pm Carmichael:

Now that I think about it, SCTV's parody Wide World of High Voices was more spot on than I knew at the time. Geddy Lee, Neil Young, Slim Whitman, etc ... Although the Bee Gees aren't from Canada.
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:25pm Dean:

Lord, this is Mary Halvorson, Joe Morris, et al.!
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:26pm Dean:

So much for King Crimson.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:26pm Kurt Gottschalk:

et al + jamie saft, chris lightcap, gerald cleaver
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:27pm Clay:

@MArk Helston .... that's the spirit! Gotta run KURT GREEEEEAT SHOW!!!!! Love ya!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:27pm common:

@ mark: i liked all those docs!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:27pm Caryn:

@common: good ol' mob Scorcese (recent Scorcese has been really disappointing to me). But before that, there's also a new British comedy on that I'm going to check out to see if it's any good. Every review I've read has compared it to either Monty Python or League of Gentlemen, so I think my expectations have been raised a little too high, but who knows? It might be alright.
@Mark H: I think the documentary directors are good. I liked their Metal Evolution series. I just doubt the quality of the documentary can make up for my lack of interest in Rush.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

cya, clay!
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:28pm Dean:

I was thinking Burkhard Stangl, maybe, a detour from Polwechsel. This is pretty spectacular.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:28pm Caryn:

Bye, Clay!
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:29pm Clay:

Plymouth - what a cool band name. Simple. Like Chevelle. Any car name kind of works. Gremlin X
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:29pm common:

I caryn: i'm with you on the marty. nothin' beats mean streets in my book.
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:29pm Clay:

Bye friend Caryn!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:31pm Caryn:

@common: I wonder if I should blame Scorcese's recent lousiness to his choice of DiCaprio as his "muse". I think both can do great work, but put together, the results tend to always be disappointing.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:34pm Mike East:

Departed was good, but that one with Mark Ruffalo (who I love) was complete garbage. shelter island, I believe. blech.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:34pm Mike East:

sorry to just jump in on your convo.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:35pm Cecile:

shutter island.
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:35pm OTB:

Granelli, Shepik, Sarin...Saft? And who's the canary?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:36pm doca:

@Kurt: from where is this Arte Quartett that recorded with Lucas Niggli?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:37pm Mark Helsten:

That guitar solo slowed down is phenomenal!!!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:37pm Cecile:

eh, not a patch on the original.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:37pm Caryn:

@Mike East: "The Departed" has been the best of their collaborations, but even that was not as good as the Korean original, and thus was disappointing. But the other 3-4 films they've made together? Ugh. Some good acting performances, but generally a big mess.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:37pm Mike East:

right, cecile. I'm google impaired apparently.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:37pm common:

caryn: yea. strange pairing. i can't bring myself to watch any of them, just looking at the images. blech.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:42pm Carmichael:

Is that sportsy talk Bronwyn? Or is there actually another Bronwyn?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:45pm Kurt Gottschalk:

diffy bronnie
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:45pm Carmichael:

Clay, come back and dig the righteous rock!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Is today a good day to play some Dread Zeppelin?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:51pm Carmichael:

Any day's a good day for that, Ken. Heartbreaker Hotel is my choice.
  Fri. 5/16/14 4:54pm Dean:

Just amazing. Twenty minutes ago I was wondering why I never hear CIMP disks on WFMU!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:55pm Kurt Gottschalk:

!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 4:57pm common:

great show kurt. and...beeeeeersies!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:20pm CockTails42:

this mingus piece might be an early example of jaz musicians using the "studio" and overdubbing as compositional devices?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:22pm Kurt Gottschalk:

right? 1962! what were the beatles doing then, huh?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:23pm Cecile:

As I learn about music, I understand now why a lot of people disdained rock until it started to grow up a little. I didn't agree with it, but compare Mingus to Patti Page, and well...
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:24pm CockTails42:

Mingus had previously edited tape, like on Tijuana Moods and Ah Um but the intent there was simply shortening solos etc.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:25pm davex:

Interesting point, Cecile!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i love fahey's tape collage stuff as well, although that might be a couple years later.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:26pm CockTails42:

safe to say (almost?)no one else in jazz was doing tape collage in 1962….the next example may be RRKirk's Rip Rig and Panic, 1965.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:28pm Kurt Gottschalk:

and rrk was on that same mingus album!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:38pm MacGuffin:

Gosh, I can't believe I missed Yvonne Elliman earlier. On WFMU of all places! And Fela Kuti... *sighs*
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:40pm Kurt Gottschalk:

well at least your hear for the very quiet tubas, macguff!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:41pm MacGuffin:

Oh is that what it is? Am I strong enough to see it through?
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:43pm MacGuffin:

I think I am. Carry on!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:44pm Kurt Gottschalk:

there'll be some czech singing in a few minutes if you can muster the strength to stick it out.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:45pm MacGuffin:

I am enjoying this, thank you.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:46pm Kurt Gottschalk:

thanks for tuning in!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:49pm davex:

Lovely Czech tune. (Admittedly a hard one to pronounce this time...)
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:50pm northguineahills:

I've rarely heard Robin Hayward. A nice treat!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:50pm Carmichael:

Czech it out!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:50pm MacGuffin:

I googled the lyrics, ran them through Google Translate, yet I am no wiser.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:50pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ha! i'm considering not trying.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:51pm Kurt Gottschalk:

^davex^
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:53pm MacGuffin:

:-)
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:55pm northguineahills:

Woo! Thanks Kurt! Enjoy the weekend everyone!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 5:56pm davex:
