..but then there was a phone call -- a friend telling me how his recent move was a NIGHTMARE of mover ineptitude and unbelievable damage damage damage. Does this EVER go entirely well anywhere? Mover stories are always like contractor stories, woeful frustration and stress-wise.

actually overdoing it with noise-reduction software on historic recordings can be really annoying on lota budget (and not only budget) re-issue CDs with otherwise superb recordings. I prefer the original surface noise in doubt. And some music cannot be easily de-clickt withou heavy damages.

Don't start. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

When my daughter was five, we played a game we invented called "Air Tic-Tac-Toe." It required no pencil or paper. We just assigned each of the nine boxes a number, 1-9 from top left to bottom right, and then called out in turn the box we were claiming. We thought we were just so damn smart!

We still play every once in a while, just for old time's sake.

@Doug, I'm with you, but I used to love visiting a friend in Fairfield, CT, around Memorial Day, when a local radio station would devote the whole morning to Zappa. Also, Cruisin' with Ruben & the Jets really is one of the best rock records, and I love Zappa's arrangement of Stairway to Heaven.

Holy cow, Doug plays Zappa! Good morning, garage rockers.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

I would be cash money to see Zappa testify before the PMRC, however. Fuck you Tipper: www.camelcitydispatch.com...
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:15am bobdc:

Hi Doug--Never was a Zappa cultist myself, either, but just yesterday I came across this excellent appearance he made on Mike Douglas alongside JJ Walker and Kenny Rogers: dangerousminds.net...

Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:15am still b/p:

I was not only a non-RPS player as a kid, I was a liar. My older brother was a Zappa fan and held Peaches and Regalia in high esteem. Because I heard him say so, I claimed once to also think it was great....though I was unfamiliar with it.

When certain circles would have limited Zappa exposure, they'd throw around "yellow snow" quotes 'til they'd beaten them to death.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:15am dc pat:

now THAT's a drum sound...
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

One of the things I find most attractive about Zappa's music is that I don't really dig it that much, which only draws my interest. I love obliterating my own biases.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:16am TR In MI:

Best Zappa for my money is the original Mothers band, especially the first 3 albums. There's something to be said for the combination of avant-garde 20th classical and greasy doo-wop.
  Fri. 5/16/14 11:16am Dean:

Precisely, Doug. Hence the immersion effect of a Memorial Day in Fairfield.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:17am Guido from Cologne:

I'd recommend to ignore zappa fans completely if you are a newby to zappa's work.

We have a record shop over here that is a near zappa temple.
ridiculous!
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

How are you, Frank in VT?!?!
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:18am Uncle Michael:

I find being challenged to be hip enough to dig the irony of a classically trained composer telling dick jokes, annoying.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:18am dc pat:

zappa fans are only marginally better than dead-heads.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Just spinning rekkids and making NEWS, Carmichael.
  Fri. 5/16/14 11:19am Dean:

Anyway, Brahms told the best dick jokes.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:19am dc pat:

yeah but the dick jokes are funny.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:19am Guido from Cologne:

the early Mothers were for sure groundbreaking.
but in retrospect even eclipsed by some tropiclia IMHO
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
Brahms' Dick Joke Concert #2 is the best. The version by St. Martin in the Fields on Deutsche Grammaphone. Sublime!
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:21am Guido from Cologne:

... still have a deep respact for the man and the work and i'm pretty sure he actually loved the music he was satirizing ... (like DooWop, etc.)
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:21am Uncle Michael:

Sir Neville Mariner was out standing in his field.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:22am Brian in UK:

Just got the last sardines in the market and missed the Vilnius statue, lucky me.
  Fri. 5/16/14 11:23am Dean:

I'm partial to Furtwangler's second account of the Variations on a Dick Joke by Haydn.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:23am βrian:

Where is that academy, anyway? When I visited as a child, I fully expected to find a meadow.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Hello and howdy, bobdc!

The comments have been scrolling by fast and furious. If I missed anybody—my apologies. Just keep throwing crap up here and I'll see it!

@UM
Sir Neville Mariner! I knew I was forgetting someone!
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:23am Carmichael:

Zappa is an outstanding jazz fusion guitarist and arranger. If only he would keep his piehole shut. He thinks he's Spike Jones sometimes, albeit without the humor.

Check out the aptly titled release, "Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar".
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:24am βrian:

Well, he's been pretty quiet of late.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:26am Carmichael:

Is there a statute regadring Vilnius in your country, Brian?
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:27am Brian in UK:

@Uncle Michael a George Martin produced comedy retrospective?
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:28am Brian in UK:

@Carmichael Can you explain his popularity in Lithuania?
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Brian, that would be preferable.

Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:30am dc pat:

Man @Carm, I totally disagree. He was funny as hell--it's the fusion crap that I can't take. Oh well. moving on.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Hahaha! You said statute, Carmichael. I thought you said "statue."
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:30am Guido from Cologne:

I own a very very beautiful single by Alpay,
kinda turkish surf-beat backed by a beat ballad.

Unfortunately noone could tell me something about this guy. except he's not seen so much in turk-rock context.
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:31am βrian:

All music makes me think of food.
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:31am dc pat:

man. That statute wins hand down as the weirdest statute ever. What did somebody in an airplane check a rifle at that guy and it hit him square in the back??
Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

This Kuni Kawachi tune is the second I've played on the show today that opened with tympani.

My. Work. Is. Done.

Avatar Fri. 5/16/14 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

The first track coming up in the next (and, sadly) final sequence of the show will be the FIRST RECORD EVER by one of the world's most famous musical artists. And his brothers. Can you guess who it will be??
Avatar    Fri. 5/16/14 11:35am Carmichael:

Trying to be wry, Doug. It fell flat, like rye instead.
