An homage to everyone's favorite vices, alternately panegyrized and censured by Brazilian 420 activists, Palestinian Just-Say-No-ers, handjob-begging Islamic punks, and guitar heroes and haters from Beijing to Warsaw.

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:03pm davex:

That doesn't sound good, Gary, unless it's good?
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:04pm carol:

oh yeah - is the joblessness intentional? im all for joblessness!!
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:04pm doca:

Hi, Gary, I'm here too!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:05pm Gary:

Howdy DOCA!
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:06pm doca:

Yes, joblessness should be celebrated
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:06pm Gary:

Well, let me just say that, I had a great job for 13 years and now I'm looking for something else.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:08pm Gary:

Not intentional on my part, no.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:09pm carol:

joblessness gets a bad wrap. sorry to hear that gary! good luck finding something even better :)
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:09pm conrad:

Who's the gal in the pic passed out/taking a well-earned break?
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:10pm Gary:

Conrad, that's Kang Mao of Subs. We'll be hearing from her a bit later this evening
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:11pm Gary:

Thanks, Carol! I'm going to make extremely good use of the time I've been given -- I feel like I've earned that much
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:13pm Gary:

It just happened yesterday, so I'm still getting used to the idea.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:14pm davex:

Sounds like a good plan - make the best of things, and who knows what's next. Sorry if that sounds a bit clichéd.
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:14pm doca:

My brother just won a major prize with his master dissertation and I'm gonna celebrate with family. See you later, Gary and all!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:14pm Gary:

Cliche or no, it's true
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:15pm doca:

*master's dissertation...

Whoa, that's awesome, DOCA -- congrats!

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:19pm listener james from westwood:

w00t! All hail cookies and their makers! Hey there, Gary and all!!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:19pm Gary:

James! Welcome!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:20pm pacific standard simon:

Hi Gary! I'm making country-style pork ribs, asparagus in asparagus puree, and potatoes roasted in duck fat -- but they just won't fit down the internet tubes!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:24pm pacific standard simon:

I do know who John Wieners is -- I have several shelves full of poetry, and I'm sure he's in some of those anthologies -- but I can't recall any favorites that he might have written.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:24pm Gary:

Hey Simon! We picked up some asparagus here at the Farmers Market last Sunday, but I think our plans for them are much less thrilling than your own
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:24pm pacific standard simon:

You know your mom might be listening to this song, right?
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:24pm listener james from westwood:

There was a discussion on Twitter earlier among a few copy editors over whether the term being mentioned in this song should be written closed, as "handjob," or open, as "hand job." Closed won the day.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:25pm Gary:

Wieners might be in one of the, gosh, like Don Allen anthologies?
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:26pm davex:

I do a lot of copy editing, but have yet to have that particular problem!
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:26pm Jill B.:

Oh, Simon, I'm not a prude!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:27pm pacific standard simon:

Yep, there he is, in The New American Poetry. Hey, I found a can of peanuts that I hid from my wife, on that shelf!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:27pm Gary:

James, I think I used a hyphen, which, if so, shows my age
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:28pm Gary:

Peanuts & Poetry
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:29pm Holly in NC:

Hi Everyone!
Congrats @Doca & brother of Doca.
@Gary, enjoy the HELL out of your unplanned break.
@pss - assuming your puree is from the stalk ends, how are you getting the fibers out? Do you have a chinois? I really want a chinois. :-)
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:29pm pacific standard simon:

OK, Jill. Just messin' with Gary. ;)
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:29pm Gary:

The Holly! Thank you!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:31pm pacific standard simon:

@Holly - You assume correct, but I'm also roasting the crap out of the stems first.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:31pm pacific standard simon:

Then steaming the tips.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:32pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:33pm cosmic matrix:

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:34pm cosmic matrix:

oops, wrong stream! sowwwy
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:34pm davex:

That last one could work for the cross-cultural confusion CD.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:35pm pacific standard simon:

What do you mean, "wrong stream"? Isn't the cosmic matrix everywhere?
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:35pm Gary:

WE'LL SHOUT OUT TO YOU ANYWAY, MR OR MS MATRIX!!!!!!! <--------[infinity]
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:35pm Uncle Michael:

Gary, I hit the station as the needle hits E!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:35pm davex:

He deserves a shout-out (shoutout? shout out?) regardless.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:37pm pacific standard simon:

Shoot out.

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:40pm Uncle Michael:

Yay, poem!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:41pm Holly in NC:

@pss - just to be a bitch, must tell you that 2 weeks ago I was lucky enough to eat asparagus freshly dug from my neighbor's yard, that and fresh eggs from their chickens = perk of dog/chicken sitting for them.

Said asparagus was delicious raw. I fervently hope that everyone has the opportunity, someday, to eat asparagus right out of the ground.

The rest of course, I ate with the eggs! :-)
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:41pm Uncle Michael:

I love Poetry Corner.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:42pm Holly in NC:

Hello UM, happy you're happy!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:44pm Gary:

Holly, we just bought tomato seeds to plant out on our apt balcony
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:44pm Jill B.:

Hello Holly, There is really nothing as wonderful as walking through your own garden and harvesting wonderful fresh vegetables and flowers! Well, almost nothing.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:46pm Gary:

Aiha Higurashi was the lead singer / songwriter in the amazing Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her (I feel like I've typed that into a previous playlist before)
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:46pm pacific standard simon:

@Holly - No complaint from me about your good fortune! We've got plenty vegetables growing around the property. I'm a big asparagus enthusiast, even though I am an *ahem* smeller.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:47pm ndbob:

nice one here Gary!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:47pm listener james from westwood:

One of the great regrets of living in an apartment is no plot of land to till. Not enough light in here to grow anything more than an herb garden. Which is still better than nothing, but not as good as going from vine or ground to table in 10 steps.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:47pm Uncle Michael:

I'm down with band names taken from XTC songs.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:48pm Gary:

UM, I will have to send you a link to all of SSKHKH's albums ... they were so, so good
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:50pm Holly in NC:

@Jill B ... romance prior to and/or after harvesting might be ideal, yes?
Or in my case at the moment, a really well made drink prior, and a really good book after ;-0
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:51pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:51pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Gary!

Now I'm less happy. Baseball postponed due to rain!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:52pm Gary:

Those guys get paid well enough that a bit of rain ought not stop them.
  Wed. 5/14/14 7:53pm Jill B.:

Holly, I agree with you!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:58pm Uncle Michael:

This is going to inspire me to play The Cosmopolitan on my show.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:58pm Gary:

"Excuse me ... I am a Frenchman" has always been my "go-to" pickup line
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:58pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! Good luck with the job search - and enjoy your time off!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 7:58pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:04pm tim abdellah:

Got here a little late - I miss the sexy time :(
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:06pm Gary:

Tim! You're just in time, however, to get wasted
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:06pm pacific standard simon:

@Gary - I'd forgotten how much I liked the Paul Carroll poem in that Allen anthology.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:07pm Gary:

That anthology is one of the greatest books ever published in this country, imho
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:08pm pacific standard simon:

Richard Brautigan was SUPER pissed-off when he got left out of it.

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:23pm pacific standard simon:

I'm pretty sure that's the only Brautigan book I've read all the way through, and 40 years ago at that. I picked up the Brautigan factoid from his biography.

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:29pm Uncle Michael:

I remember reading about that awful event.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:29pm Uncle Michael:

There's a lot of ginger in the cake too.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:31pm Uncle Michael:

Huh...this version has no ginger in the cake batter. I'm sure when I watched her make it there was a lot.

i'd eat that cake

Speaking of sweets: THE COOKIES ARE READY
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:39pm Ike:

Hi there! To take it back from sweet to spicy, there is a great new Thai steam table joint called Khao Kang on Woodside Ave. (Elmhurst/Jackson Hts.). They can't tone it down for farangs because the food is already made, so some of the dishes are spicy enough to melt your face off! $7.50 for 3 things over rice. Really nice.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:40pm Gary:

Ike! I'ma drag my GF there this weekend!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:45pm Uncle Michael:

OMG, I *love* 3 things!

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:48pm Uncle Michael:

I don't care, as longs there's rice under them.

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:51pm Holly in NC:

dang I love this song. LOVE.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:51pm pacific standard simon:

@Holly - the asparagus stems required no straining -- try roasting them to complete softness, next time, then puree with EVOO , lemon and garlic. Or you could roast the garlic with the asparagus!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:54pm Uncle Michael:

I'm lazy with asparagus. I just bend them near the thick end till they snap. The stump is the tough part. The rest is tender.
  Wed. 5/14/14 8:55pm Jill B.:

OH MY GOD...croque madame/monsiuer......sounds like heaven!
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:56pm tim abdellah:

Nicely played, Tim!

I've heard a lot of versions of Killing Floor and this sure is one of them.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 8:59pm Holly in NC:

@pss - that sounds fabulous. I'm thinking about adding chopped preserved lemons over the top, maybe?

@Gary - For far too many years of my life, I would've adopted the Joyside cigarette song as my mantra. What a fool was I, and yet I still pause outside smoking areas to inhale that luscious 2ndhand smoke... and hey the Joyside song is really good!
  Wed. 5/14/14 8:59pm mike east:

Looks great James. Mustard or Russian dressing?
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:02pm pacific standard simon:

I'm sure that would be awesome, Holly. I'm planning on serving the steamed tips in the puree, then squeezing some lemon into the steaming water and spooning a little over the tips.

I've never heard of a rachel sandwich before tonight.

Still waiting on the potatoes in the oven. It IS only 6 PM here...
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:06pm listener james from westwood:

@mike east: Russian in this case.
@Holly, Jill: Thanks! The only thing I was missing was cole slaw. That would've put it into Bo Derek in "10" territory.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:09pm Holly in NC:

@Gary -I can't find that particular Joyside anywhere on the web, any clues?

@ljfw - you need kraut OR slaw in the sandwich, not both. And I do love slaw. My vote is kraut in, side of slaw on the side.
  Wed. 5/14/14 9:09pm mike east:

The right choice IMO
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:10pm Gary:

Holly, I'll post it for you (and anyone else, just lemme know)
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

Man, I could really go for some Midori right now.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:14pm Holly in NC:

We *could* start an argument regarding what exactly comprises a russian dressing, vs 1000 island vs any other reuben-esque dressing contenders - but I have to go walk dogs so I'll look forward to reading everyone's thoughts in archive. [West Coast folks you may not understand the gauntlet I've just thrown down]
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:15pm pacific standard simon:

Holly, you ought to adopt this album title as your motto. :)
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:15pm Gary:

Happy Doggin, Holly!
  Wed. 5/14/14 9:16pm mike east:

My understanding has always been the difference is pickles/relish in Russian, which is what makes it superior
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:18pm Uncle Michael:

My Reuben dressing is mayo with relish, catsup and horseradish.
  Wed. 5/14/14 9:20pm DJ Poodlecannon:

Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:22pm pacific standard simon:

I've got this Seattle stuff called Karam's Garlic Sauce -- you can order it online, and I heartily recommend that you do.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:24pm Gary:

Thanks, Poodlecannon! Hey everyone, it's the awesome DJ Poodlecannon! I'll have to have him back on the show again soon so we can have a Brooklyn/Queens deathmatch rematch

I remember Stereo Total! They did that Eurovision song, too. French singing in Germany, great show.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:43pm Ike:

Hmm, I'm listening from a friend's place and her computer speakers sound OK for music, but terrible & muddy whenever a DJ is talking, like the DJ is in a heavy cardboard box. Same problem for all shows. Fiddled w/settings but can't find source of problem. Maybe a connection is loose somewhere.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:46pm davex:

I'm not entirely sure, but it could be the heavy cardboard box.
Avatar Wed. 5/14/14 9:49pm Gary:

I like to work inside the box, Ike
