Tee hee. Silly Commie.

Cartoon music. I like such things. We all do.

Oh wow, I remember this cartoon. I can picture it playing out to the music.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:10pm Dean:

I want to know what sign is displayed on the monitor behind our comrade. "Something something ... Disneyland"?
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:10pm Robert:

In 1989 I was watching this cartoon with friends. Imagine our surprise when we saw the date on the cornerstone of the house of bricks was that of the founding of the Order of the Illuminati.

Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:13pm common:

hello flaming lips!
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:14pm Webhamster Henry:

The Three Little Bops' Voice is of course Stan Freberg.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:14pm Robert:

So I phoned Friz Freling, and thru an intermediary he denied any knowledge of significance of that May 1, 1776. True story.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:16pm Robert:

Henry, you sure it wasn't Paul Frees?
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 3:17pm rrg:

Henry knows his stuff, though I suppose anything is possible.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:17pm cokane:

That Flaming Lips song made my day!
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:17pm Alison Porchnik:

Who the hell is Memphisto anyway? I've got to know.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:18pm Laura L:

Under full communism does anybody care what an individual wants?
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:19pm ?:

There are no wants, everything is provided.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 3:19pm Mike East:

are iphones provided?
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 3:19pm rrg:

I don't think Irwin plays John Prine often enough.

What's that you say? Nobody asked me?
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:21pm Parq:

I'm very fond of this talkover music. I remember when Charlie used to use it.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:25pm Irwin:

LL: What I don't want from her is full FRONTAL communism.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:26pm Irwin:

Parq: Charlie used this? You sure?
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:27pm ?:

Irwin, I think WFMU is missing an opportunity. Think of the benefit to humanity without the recombinant algorithm. Maybe you all could finally find a cure for Ken.... I know its a long shot anything is possible with free form radio.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:27pm Longtime Commenter:

It's rare for anyone to ask anyone for an opinion on the comments board. Commenters are mainly selfstarters.

Is this the reboot of "Rats in my Room?"
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 3:29pm rrg:

I'm old enough to remember when not everyone knew this.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:29pm Webhamster Henry:

It sounded to me like "Got Rats" ... I should move close to the speaker.

You must be plumb crazy if you keep moving that tone arm!
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 3:30pm rrg:

Hey. Irwin stopped the lecture just when it was getting to the good stuff.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:31pm Irwin:

rrg: LL can explain the source. She provided it.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 3:32pm Parq:

Irwin -I fear I may be mistaking it for a different piece. I remember that Charlie used another sort of vibrating piece (with periodic squeals of "Oh yeah!"), and I thought this was the same piece. I'm only devoting half a mind to the program today, so excuse my mistake.
  Wed. 5/7/14 3:33pm Laura L:

Here ya go--the visuals are good too. My brother worked on this exact same equipment for H. Ross Perot in the late 1970s in Texas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKslgJnQgG8

Irwin is long-winded? Look who's talking. Heh.
Wed. 5/7/14 4:06pm That Bipolar Guy:

I'm very tired today my friends. I fought an all night battle with bed bugs and I lost I had to sleep on the floor to get them to stop biting me

IRWIN? Please be kind and not play any Amanda on this weeks show, please?

Good for your wife, Mike. But not good for Joe Frank.

she'll learn to appreciate it. Its tough for a 1.5 year old...I can't really even get her to pay attention to cartoons.

When Joe Frank was on late-night in L.A., I drifted off a number of times while listening to him. His voice is soothing (even when what he's saying isn't) and the music loops can be hypnotically relaxing too.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 4:43pm Mike East:

I tried listening on Sunday, but couldn't even keep my eyes open til 11...ended up falling asleep to Le Show.
  Wed. 5/7/14 4:46pm P-90:

  Wed. 5/7/14 4:47pm Longtime Commenter:

Ah, another Joe Frank late-afternoon pick-me-up!
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 4:48pm chris:

Hypothetically, communism could lead to a fair society; and yes, the care of the individual is neglected for the care of the community (ideally, what's good for the community must be good for the individual)... However, I don't think we can point to any communist society in history ever having succeeded in providing a fair society. People will be people and any power given to any one individual will corrupt them. Therefore, I am correcting the young lady's sign to say, I want full democracy (a socialist state, where each citizen has a say in how the government functions). It would lead to an extremely inefficient, but fair, society. Closest examples are a few of the European countries...
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 4:56pm Stanley:

Poor old Frank, he doesn't have it easy.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 4:56pm fleep:

I'd prefer an anarcho-syndicalist commune. Where we take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.
  Wed. 5/7/14 4:58pm Longtime Commenter:

Joe largely mesmerizes the commenters into inability to type.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 4:59pm Droll:

I want a fair society, too! I love to meander down the rows of booths with rigged ring-toss games and $7 cotton candy! Who doesn't love the fair life? Free carnival rides on the Twirl-A-Puke for everyone!
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:01pm P-90:

...so perhaps: an "Anarcho-syndicalist/Twirl-A-Puke Hybrid" system?
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:01pm Mike East:

government sponsored turkey legs.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:02pm P-90:

Eric Idle might actually endorse the idea
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:05pm efd:

I guess first we're going to have to explain what a mimeograph was.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:06pm Irwin:

Also explain what they smelled like.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:06pm P-90:

@efd: Ha! where's Marshall McLuhan when you really need him?
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:07pm rrg:

Enough, old people!
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:07pm Alison Porchnik:

I miss that smell.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:07pm P-90:

--and the mind-altering effects when you sniffed 'em real deep
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:08pm Droll:

...and the dampness of them when they were fresh!

As long as we're building a more perfect union, let's talk about elections. If corporations are people, they should get to vote.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:08pm rrg:

I used ditto more than I used mimeo.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:11pm P-90:

@rrg: Ditto?! What are you, some kind of communist or something?
Or: Canadian? that's it, right?
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:12pm Irwin:

On this track Evelyn Glennie plays marimba, 2 mark trees, 5 tom toms, 3 cowbells, 5 temple blocks, Chinese cymbal, suspended cymbal, bell tree, claves, and stones
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:12pm rrg:

Uh, oh. Is that some kind of telltale?
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:13pm rrg:

What's a mark tree?

Never mind, I'll look it up.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:14pm Laura L:

Does Evelyn Glennie look like a Jim Flora character with extra arms and hands?
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:14pm Irwin:

BTW, Evelyn Glennie is deaf.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:15pm P-90:

No shit?!
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:15pm Kathy:

PERSON at least in/under law IS a corporation.
We living breathing souls are either MEN or WOMEN, NOT persons.
Unless of course you want to contract with other "persons" and receive bills from them, than you must assume the role of "person".
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:16pm Irwin:

She feels vibrations. She has never heard audience applause. Also reads lips.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:17pm Carmichael:

That's some heavy-ass shit, Irwin. I'll have to sit in the carpet and think.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:18pm Laura L:

That's astonishing! Exactly what I was going to ask--is it a vibratory sense. Have been in a room with deaf folks--they raise their hands and wave them for applause--it's amazing to see.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:19pm Mike East:

rental cost for Evelyn Glennie's percussion is $475 plus tax for the day....bring your own stones, though. Add $200 roundtrip if you need it delivered.

Wiki says she performs barefoot --that was my first thought, everything on that list of instruments can be "heard" through other parts of the body
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:19pm Irwin:

She was a student with the Cults Percussion Ensemble, whose amazing album was reissued on Trunk Records a few year ago.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:20pm Mike East:

that is the type of email I send all day
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:23pm Droll:

Glennie contends that deafness is largely misunderstood by the public. She claims to have taught herself to hear with parts of her body other than her ears. -- Wikipedia

I know holding the instrument is very different from standing inches away from it and listening. I think we underestimate how large a part of sound is touch.
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:25pm P-90:

@ Mike East: I think you've mentioned that before, you work for an SIR-type musical supply house?

@ Droll: Yeah! if you've spent time around "deaf" people, you learn fast that they "hear" a lot
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:25pm Alison Porchnik:

I really like this tune
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:30pm Mike East:

yeah, small version of SIR. We have more percussion though...lotta orchestras and broadway pits come here. SIR gets all the "cool" clients.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:31pm Mike East:

oops, I shouldn't put that out there. All our clients are VERY COOL. And we appreciate their business VERY MUCH.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:31pm Irwin:

EFD: NOTE DRUM BREAK COMING UP AFTER FALSE ENDING.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:32pm Carmichael:

Boy, great ol' song with great ol' memories. Some of them are still alive.
Wed. 5/7/14 5:36pm That Bipolar Guy:

Well you learn something new every day:) a deaf percussionist who plays barefoot
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:37pm Droll:

. o O ( Nice fill, but EFD's choice of The Four Horsemen by Aphrodite's Child has the better fill (part in general)... Will he ever play it for H&M? )
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:40pm Carmichael:

That Young Widows was kinda Spinal Tappy in its rock seriousness.

Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:44pm Irwin:

Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:44pm Carmichael:

"Rock and Roll Creation", specifically. Play them against one another and judge for ya selfs.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:46pm Mike East:

  Wed. 5/7/14 5:47pm Laura L:

It even hit the high note!
Wed. 5/7/14 5:47pm Listening Out There:

Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:51pm Mike East:

when I worked a Borders, EVERYBODY bought Yankee Foxtrot Hotel.
Avatar    Wed. 5/7/14 5:52pm Irwin:

It's all pretty good. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Wilco (The Album) recommended.

The title of YHF comes from one of those cryptic "numbers stations."

Cmon, younger peoples, chime in. Oh wait, that would be EVERYONE.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:56pm Droll:

Thanks Irwin, nice closing set, I'll see you later in archiveland for the first half. I'm really looking forward to hearing the battle of Random Access vs Sequential Storage. Those direct-access suckers are gonna get mummified by the 9-track guys.
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 5:57pm Mike East:

@Carmichael - by Everybody, I mean a lot old farts bought that album too
  Wed. 5/7/14 5:59pm P-90:

Thnx DJ Irwin
--and Joe F. , wherever you are, somewhere out there
Avatar Wed. 5/7/14 10:09pm Charlie:

After using the WFMU teleportation chamber (i.e. the archives) to listen to this program, I can confirm that I have never used that talkover music. (Sorry, Parq.)
Avatar Thu. 5/8/14 3:51am Droll:

Howdy Irwin! I took the new teleporter here, to the past. It's great. The opening set was great. Everything's great. Hope you're great.

The Three Little Bops was cool. That's jazz-speak for great, as you well know. The line "I wish my brother George was here" is the title of a Del Tha Funky Homosapien album. Any connection?

I have a 15" platter from an old disk pack. Random access to all the music on that side of the album, indeed!

DEAD! I did my trippy crowd-swimming dance.

Damn fine show, as usual. Have a fun week.
