Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 9:17am Alex In Illinois:

I don't see an Ukulele anywhere. All of the 4-stringed instruments appear to be banjos except for the "mandobass". It looks like there are three parlor guitars in back.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

Maybe the worst fake old lady voice in the history of fake old lady voices on record!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Pocomania leaned to the African side of things, its Pentecostal-style services owing an obvious debt to African possession ceremonies. Worshippers would internal linkdance counter-clockwise to powerful internal linkdrums while breathing very deeply; this "trumping" would sometimes brings on possession—the "little madness" that lent the church its name.
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 9:19am Brian in UK:

This was a big hit for the Dubliners in the Sixties as 'Seven Drunken Nights'. Ronnie Drew had a wonderful powerful voice.

Earl Johnson was a Gid Tanner groupie!
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 9:23am Alex In Illinois:

Another funny thing about the "Three nights" song is that different people give it different titles. The Gid Tanner recording called is "Three Nights Drunk". I think I even saw it listed as "Four Nights Drunk" somewhere.

Curious about the date of that photo, I searched for similar and found a link with some info. It's a group portrait of the Karl Alex Smyser Banjo Band taken ~1931. (Source bluegrasstoday.com...)

Wowza earrie! I did some cursory searching this morning, but didn't find that source. Thanks! Did you play any of the listen links?!?
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 9:46am listener james from westwood:

Hats off to earrie for the mad search skillz!
I must be in a rhythm mood today. First "Kettle Drum Suite," now "Chango" is entrancing me. And before GTDS, I had DJ Small Change's drum 'n' bass–heavy show from earlier this week on.

Looks like your late for scupper, holland oats!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:05am Holly in NC:

I don't care for any drink that messes up a perfectly fine black coffee, espresso or otherwise. EXCEPT iced coffee requires cream, imho.

Oh, and Vietnamese coffee is like crack, a very occasional treat.

Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 10:09am duke:

I'm with Holly. Good coffee should be black and strong
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:10am βrian:

Aye. And in my book, one may not stir the cream. One has to admire the natural lava-lamp distribution of the cream through the iced coffee. Beautiful.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:13am βrian:

But a good espresso should grip the tongue in an unforgiving embrace. Don't dilute the love.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:13am dc pat:

Best espresso I ever had was on the train from Paris to Florence. The stirrer basically could stand up in the stuff. I can still taste it and that was in 1986.

Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:21am Van in DC:

I'm thinking Thai Iced Tea for lunch. Accompanied by very hot green curry chicken...
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:21am βrian:

One of the best espressos I ever had was at a small riverside cafe ... in Beloit, Wisconsin! WTF? It took forever, and it was worth waiting for. (That cafe has since gone out of business, sadly.)
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

On that same train ride, I shared a couchette with four other people. (It had two sets of triple-tier bunk beds.) In the cabin where my friend Dan and three members of another family, two elderly parents and their grown son. The elderly father was tubercular and for the entire ride was coughing up phlegm into a plastic baggie.

I drank a lot of espresso that trip.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:22am Scott McDowell:

Haha, Doug, you're too much! Coffee is fine, but this is just amazing music. Thank you.

  Fri. 5/2/14 10:30am Cecile:

Speaking of phlegm, I had a miserable cold this week. And any place that has a Lavazza sign tends to be a good bet for espresso
  Fri. 5/2/14 10:34am Cecile:

I am in the "just a tiny bit of milk" school of coffee drinking.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

And "Mouse" in "Pal Joey."
  Fri. 5/2/14 10:56am Andujar:

have you heard Debo Band, a contemporary unit out of Boston?
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:58am Gary:

I first learned about Slim Gaillard in an American Splendor comic. This one: sirrealcomix.mrainey.com...
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:59am Gary:

The Sun Ra piece in there is fun, too.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Andujar
Yes, my FMU colleague Rob Weisberg has played them quite a bit.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

Just thought I should give you fair warning. The next selection comes from an LP called "Year of the Iron Sheep."
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

Nice "Pal Joey" reference, still b/p.
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 11:06am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the anniversary well-wishes.

Hinky Dinky birthday party here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:09am βrian:

Is that a Kansas Po' Boy?
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 11:12am duke:

Will there be cake at the Hinky Dinky birthday party?
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 11:12am Alex In Illinois:

Sometimes a "remix" of something African means adding "Dance Floor Training Wheels". IN other words, a heavily pronounced beat, added,
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:13am Gary:

But I *love* the Ethiopium album!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

I love this album cover: www.israbox.com...
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:14am Carmichael:

OK, finally got here. Good morning Doug, drummers, pickers & grinners.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
The wisdom of adding a dance beat to an African recording seems very coals to Newscastlish to me. (I am being kind. I don't want to say what I REALLY think of doing that.)

Hope to get your ears grinning, Carmichael!
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 11:16am listener james from westwood:

"Ethiopium" doesn't show up in Tom Lehrer's "Elements" song, but it should.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

I hope all your paint is dry. The next selection will otherwise peel it. In a good way.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:22am Carmichael:

As long as it doesn't sand my hardwood floors.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

This Yosuke Yamashita Trio record — which has been just blowing me away lately — has the best or maybe second best cover of Albert Ayler's "Ghosts" I've ever heard. It is miraculous.

@Carmichael
It doesn't do windows.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:24am Scott McDowell:

Akira Sakata blasting!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

While this record is billed as a "Trio" performance, actually an additional horn player (Gerald Oshita along with Akira Sakata) is present. Not only that, but elsewhere on the record, a large troupe of traditional butoh musicians/dancers appear. Mindfuckingblowing.
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:28am northguineahills:

What did I miss?

Holy rumspringas!!!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

You can download this Yosuke Yamashita record here: differentperspectivesinmyroom.blogspot.com...
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:29am Carmichael:

Do they get their inspiration from the Hampton Grease Band's Halifax?
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

We're just playing some pinochle, northguineahills. Should we deal you in?
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:34am northguineahills:

do so!

Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

Taking this show mobile; in case my connection has a conniption, thanks for the delightful show, Doug!!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:47am Helen of Schenectady:

Is this JB cover downloadable somewhere?
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Alex in Illinois
NO! My dear friend (and a friend to all who love music) Adam Lore tipped me off to a current eBay listening of this record. The listing provided full-song downloads, so I grabbed them!!!!!!!
  Fri. 5/2/14 11:48am Andujar:

love the JB cover!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Helen of Schenectady
I found it on an eBay listing. Not sure if it is still posted. Go search. If you can find it, email me and I will send you both Fadaul tracks!

Hey, the stream jumped, Doug!
Avatar Fri. 5/2/14 11:59am Doug Schulkind:

You absolutely MUST go to Youtube after the show and watch the video of this performance. Billy is for some inexplicable reason wearing an absurdly large cowboy hat.
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 11:59am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the show, Doug. See you all for cake.
Avatar    Fri. 5/2/14 12:00pm duke:
