why is it that it is better to listen to the actual show than the archives? it may be that we feel we have some tiny connection to the process. this comment thingy notwithstanding. it would be the same without it . when i flap my tiny butterfly wings here on the couch i am contributing to chaos.. yes!

Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:39am Guido from Cologne:

Vinyl has limitations and thus the sound might underg certain heavy treatments during the mastering process.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:39am Matt from Springfield:

Vinyl is the ultimate physical media--stylus manually reading data, same rough technique for more than a century.

Anyone can make a CD--I wonder if I can get a computer with a 16-X vinyl-ROM burner...

  Thu. 5/1/14 4:41am P-90:

@ DJ Meghan: Good (May Day) Morning!

Kristeen has a point about the redundancy of artists crediting themselves as producers on their own records...

I only own one Pixies album in vinyl and it's the latest one. Fugly cover.

Darnit BGZ..where are you going, maybe they'll be there
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:41am Julie:

Yes but there are also those folks who assume a man did all the producing.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:42am Matt from Springfield:

@Guido: Most notably, you can't engineer too deep a bass on records, or else it will jump the stylus off.
Avatar Thu. 5/1/14 4:42am BadGuyZero:

I checked my calendar. I'll be chasing Mogwai around.
  Thu. 5/1/14 4:43am Orvan Taurus:

I have seen an article about 3d printing a record. It sounded sort of like a crude pre-electronic amplifier cylinder when played.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:43am Matt from Springfield:

And I guess it represents the evolution of a performer, when they can produce their own recordings (and possibly produce for others too).
  Thu. 5/1/14 4:43am Gizmo "G":

Mogwai?
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:44am Matt from Springfield:

@Orvan: I can only assume that 3d fab will improve with time, particularly specialty functions like printing a record (perhaps using a different material than vinyl if it produces a better sound).
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:45am Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

@Orvan: Somebody uploaded a 3D printer file for "Blue Monday". It's insanely huge.

@Matt: Does that mean if they ever discover "the brown note", they can't put it on vinyl? -(
Avatar Thu. 5/1/14 4:45am BadGuyZero:

www.mogwai.co.uk
  Thu. 5/1/14 4:46am P-90:

@ Julie: You mean if the artist is female, there's a tendency to a sexist assumption that some male probably produced the record for her?
Avatar Thu. 5/1/14 4:46am BadGuyZero:

BLERG! That link didn't post correctly.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:47am Julie:

Yes, P-90.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:48am Guido from Cologne:

The RIAA-curve means HEAVY Equalisation:
- bass and heights off while cutting the matrix
- the reverse way during every playback with your stylus

In this process some heavy distortions might show up (distorted deep bass, distortsted S-consonants or hi-hat)
Thus in the preperation such traps have to be smothed out.
It's a craft that has to be done attentively.

All in all it is heavy sound manipulation, though the averga listener is not aware.
All the stuff about vinyl simply sounds "better" or "more natural" really does not make sense from the logical point of view.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:50am Matt from Springfield:

Without the H.R. Puffenstuff lyric, this would sound a lot like a Kate song.

@Elwyn: Rest assured, whoever discovers the "brown note" is going to send a massive email to play it out of all our computers ;)
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 4:51am Matt from Springfield:

Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 5:01am Spatulator (formerly elwyn5150):

See you all later!
  Thu. 5/1/14 5:02am P-90:

@ Guido: Yes, of course digital and analog records are eq'd differently. But the issue with digital mostly concerns the loss of some kinds of sonic "information" in digital that are retained on vinyl.
And sampling rate: Neil Young famously wrote a letter to Guitar Player magazine in may 1993 called "Digital is a Rip-Off" in which he made a strong argument that the industry rushed to "lock-in" the standard rate too quickly, instead of waiting for denser sampling to become practical. He's since participated in the development of an improved digital recording system...
  Thu. 5/1/14 5:04am P-90:

And @ Matt: I just hope that whoever finally delivers that "brown note" washes their hands thoroughly afterward.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 5:07am Matt from Springfield:

@P-90: Indeed. I didn't consider how messy research can be...
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 5:13am Julie:

Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 5:23am Guido from Cologne:

Sampling rates on CDs are relatively low. And those on effect units from 80ies were extremely low. If you do digital multi-track production, this is an issue. Today productions are done with higher sampling rates.

I dare to say, you have more signal loss via the signal-noise ratio and the physical limitations of the vinyl (such as extremely low basses and extremely high heights) than with sampling rates limitations of the red book CD standard.

... just came in mind:
I heaven't mentioned the dynamics, signal-noise-ratio thing ... which leds to a need for compression ... even on classic music productins.

Those good old analog compression machines were extremely expensive and are hard to simulate. They often are preceived as "pleasant", "full" or "warm".

I suspect the all-over manipulation (EQing and Compression) pruoduces a certain loss of transparence and an increase of denity in sound, which is preceived "pleasant" . And of course listening to "classic 70ies rock albums" which had been produced for vinyl: when simply put to CD, the result can be shocking.

Neil Young said?
Well.... he said ...
I have been discussing with mastering engineers, who personally are into the craft.
Avatar    Thu. 5/1/14 5:24am Matt from Springfield:

@BGZ: That's just wrong...but how can it be wrong, when it feels *so* right??
Avatar Thu. 5/1/14 5:24am BadGuyZero:
