Untalkedover talkover music. Great idea.
I'm saying nothing.

Mum's the word, earrie!

[insert joke about the lengths to which DJs will go to get people to go to bed with them here]
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:48pm Doug Schulkind:

For admittance to this all-bed show, there is NO COVER.
  Tue. 4/22/14 5:50pm Wet blanket:

I don't get it.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:52pm Doug Schulkind:

The proximity of Wet Blanket and Music Bed makes me kinda nervous.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:53pm Electric blanket:

Are you plugged in?
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:54pm Blanket Veto:

Hope you enjoy gavel-to-gavel coverage of tonight's program.

Just keep your hand out of any stray bowls of warm water.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 5:56pm Bed Head:

Sooo ... will you be using all a capella tracks for the bed music's bed music?
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:56pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Are you saying I shouldn't play this dude on my show? s229.photobucket.com...

evening Doug and everyone!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:58pm Doug Schulkind:

The a capella are kaput on today's show, Bed Head.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 5:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Glad you're here, ndbob!

Howdy, all! Would that be a boom box spring?
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:01pm Uncle Michael:

HELLO!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:02pm Carmichael:

Boing, boing! Let me set my radio AND my bed to 35.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:03pm Uncle Michael:

Stop talking over the talkover music!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Hi and howdy, LJFW, UM and Carmichael!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:05pm Jeff Golick:

No, he seems cool, Doug. Those sticks appear to be regulation length.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael, Opening Themes don't count in this conceit. Unless you'd like me to play my opening theme for an hour.

Hmmmm, maybe I will.

Please don't toss food into the cage!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:11pm Bed Sullivan:

This is shaping up to be a rilly big shooo
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:11pm earrie:

I wonder, Doug, if you're doing a bunch of false approaches to the mic thinking, 'time to speak' ?
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:12pm Doug Schulkind:

This way I can sneak up on you with a mic break!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:14pm Jeff Gotobed:

That Uncle Michael photo is impressive. My set-up looks like the Lincoln log version, by comparison. Actually, a similar photo in my home would pretty much just look like me at my desk.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:15pm Uncle Michael:

As kids, many of us contributed to the death of Mike the polar bear at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago by throwing him marshmallows...which the zoo sold for that purpose.

Get ready to be Nampoohed!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:17pm Uncle Michael:

I like that anti-snoring headboard.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:18pm Carmichael:

Hey, they're talking over their own untalkedover talkover music!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:18pm Doug Schulkind:

@Gary
I am TOTALLY stealing that image for my next Music Bed Special. Thanxxx!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:18pm Can't Come Up With A Funny Name Quick Enough:

Damn, super loving this Nampooh
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:18pm Uncle Michael:

You've talked over *this*, Doug. You're sporting quite a pair!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:19pm Doug Schulkind:

I rarely use music with vocals for a bed, but when the singing is not in English, I sometimes works.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:19pm Jeff Golick:

Gary, that's amazing. Almost certainly to be slept in by one dude, always.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:20pm Doug Schulkind:

And by a pair, I assume you mean Technics 1200s, yes UM?
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:20pm Uncle Michael:

Yes. That's surely what I meant.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:21pm Ike:

Eep!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:22pm Jeff Golick:

I'm finding comforter in this show.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:23pm Gary:

@Jeff: No sheet.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:24pm Doug Schulkind:

On my December Music Bed Special, I will play "Duvet Know It's Christmas."
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:24pm Uncle Michael:

I've been thinking about settling on a fixed slate of music beds. I find the shows that do that like Amanda's and Matt's have a familiar and subconscious arc that I come to know and love.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:25pm listener james from westwood:

Oh man. That pun takes the cake.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:25pm Uncle Michael:

Damnit, Doug...why can't I quilt you?
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:27pm Doug Schulkind:

I am easy, Uncle Michael. I hop from music bed to music bed.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:28pm Doug Schulkind:

GIVE THE DRUMMER PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Don't look now, but Gary Sullivan's Bodega Pop Live tomorrow night is going to be A KILLER:

bodegapop.blogspot.com...
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:28pm Bed Joke:

@Mike: I think Jesse plays the same bed music songs every show, but I haven't checked to see if they're always in the same order. I have this feeling that they probably are, tho
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:30pm hyde:

ack, i'm going to miss the first part of Bodega Pop tomorrow. Thank god for archives.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:30pm Jeff Golick:

With apologies for the shop-talk, I'll put in that I've increasingly narrowed my bed choices. Just makes like easier, and I agree that there's perhaps a pavlovian thing that happens too.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:31pm davex:

Particularly enjoying this set, Doug!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:33pm Doug Schulkind:

I, too, feel a certain measure of comfort and belonging when I hear familiar bed music on other shows. Not sure why I choose to ever-widen my circle of bed options, but I do. I just do, dammit.

I'm glad you here to hear, davex!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:33pm davex:

Glad you're present to present!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Back to Bed for another year!
Hi Doug and Drummers! Dddigggin the bbbbbassss on thisssss one!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:35pm hyde:

what's weirdest is when someone who always uses the same bed music changes it up for some reason. it's really jarring. it's offputting, like it was listening to Rex when his reverb was busted.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:36pm Doug Schulkind:

Well well well, if it isn't Matt from Springfield! It is,, it is Matt from Springfield!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Glad you're atuned to the tunes, davex. (OK, we should end this right now.)

LURVING this set
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:39pm Sheet Talkin:

Yay, just found & downloaded me a copy of the Hifana album with Nampooh on it!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

It is! (I think. I surely hope...)

@Doug: Comforting musical beds, like Joe McG's Kevin Ayers ("Crystal Clear", perhaps my fave!), Scott Williams' lineup, Amanda & Fiveash as mentioned above. Irwin once had comfy, worn-in bed music but then he switched it up.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

Whereas your beds are familiar, but with a VERY long rotation in between! Much like the stream, you acquire and acquire and just can't stop!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:41pm earrie:

And of course, The Nutley Brass Band's version of 'I wanna be sedated' from dj Monica's show.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:42pm listener james from westwood:

Always whistle along to Scott's "Let's Face the Music and Dance" and Amanda's "Alone Again (Naturally)."
This show's been a Posturepedic for the ears, Doug!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:42pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey-O, H(olland) O(ats)!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:42pm Uncle Michael:

If efd ever changed his bed music I'd be lost. Or Bob Brainen's frogs...
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Bob Brainen's opening theme is still the greatest ever. And Uncle Michael's closing theme is equally thrilling.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:43pm davex:

Okay Doug, just wanted to say that I dug.

Doug's just thrilled when I'm done.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:46pm Matt from Springfield:

@LJFW: Let's face the music and dance (to Bolero) with a swing in your step: cast your fate to the wind! And don't sleep in the subway...
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:46pm Doug Schulkind:

The horn thing on this Preston Love track is so deeply a SOUTH AFRICAN riff. Straight out of the Brotherhood of Breath. I swear it.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:47pm listener james from westwood:

Yes! The "Subway" one's a wonderful whistle.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:47pm Jeff Golick:

The harmony reminds me of Roland Kirk blowing double.

This whole show is outstanding.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:49pm Doug Schulkind:

I don't get it, davex. That's just not funny.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:49pm Holly in NC:

Hi Doug & all other friends!
I am typing on computer but listening via phone, slightly dosconcerting.
Yay flute.
Any Michael Gerrick recommendations?
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:49pm ndbob:

Heya Holly!!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:50pm Carmichael:

You're doing it backwards, Holly. Or maybe sideways.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:50pm Uncle Michael:

I need to ask people I know about Preston Love. I wonder if my Uncle Jim knows him or of him.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:50pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
That comment is a real stritch.

HI HOLLY!
I love Michael Garrick. Black Marigolds is fab.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:51pm Doug Schulkind:

I looped this Preston Love track. I could let it run for another 19 minutes!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:52pm Holly in NC:

@Carmichael - My home internet connection often does not allow for non-hiccupy stream streaming, esp. when my housemate is home. Phone is nice & smooth :-)
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:53pm Doug Schulkind:

I haven't actually used this Jibberish as a bed yet. I freaking can't wait!!! Maybe this Friday, if I remember to pull it out.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:53pm Uncle Michael:

I have the ability to make tracks repeat in the software I use. I just let my mic beds loop and fade them out when I begin the subsequent set.

I'd go all Michael Shelley and DJ the crap outta my show if I could do so and still manage the playlist. So...it's not gonna happen any time soon.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:54pm Bed-Azzled:

Yay Muslimgauze!

This show is bed-lam.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:55pm Land of Nodding My Head in Quick Fashion:

^^^^
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

This Muslimgauze track is technically a horrible bed. It has all these burbs and pauses that still freak me out constantly thinking it's run out or something. And yet, I use it and use it and use it. Cause I love it.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:56pm northguineahills:

Fine fun job, Doug, thanks!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:56pm Doug Schulkind:

Burbs should be "burps" of course. {burp}
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:57pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey, NGH, you quiet feller in the back row you!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:57pm Holly in NC:

Did Doug mention that Shuggie Otis is all over the Preston Love lp?
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:57pm listener james from westwood:

Glitchy is in. Or so The Kids say.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Holly is right-o-rama! Shuggie featured on geetar on the Preston Love.
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:58pm earrie:

Gosh, look at the time. It's getting time to tuck this one in.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:58pm hyde:

thanks!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:58pm ndbob:

excellent show Doug!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 6:58pm Doug Schulkind:

If I start hearing this crazy glitchyness in the background during a mic break, I know I've been talking too damn long!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:59pm davex:

Okay, Doug, you bed-ouin!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 6:59pm BlabBed:

So, so awesome show!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 7:00pm Holly in NC:

Yes, loved the bit I caught, will have to go back to archive. Thank you, Doug!
Black Marigolds, check.
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 7:00pm Uncle Michael:

Great fun, Doug!
Avatar    Tue. 4/22/14 7:00pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: Freak-out beds can be great too (think of the Nino Rota "Clowns" piece you sometimes dig out! ;)

Always a treat to hear every year! The show where the beds finally have their day! Or maybe night. In any case, thanks muchly Doug!
Avatar Tue. 4/22/14 7:00pm Jeff Golick:

Lullabye-bye everyone, and thanks, Doug!
