hmm - to me nothing goes well with broccoli - there are green veggies i like - snow peas, green beans, asparagus - but nothing can make broccoli palatable to me, let alone tasty - I'd rather eat at McDonald's:)
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:49am βrian:

And all hail Sweet Mother Kale, of course. A nice chiffonade, lightly steamed. then dressed with almonds, lemon, and olive oil.

ah - a double cheeseburger, small order of fries - though I would definitely prefer broccoli free Asian food
Avatar    Fri. 4/18/14 10:52am listener james from westwood:

ndbob: I don't know if broccoli roasts as well as cauliflower or Brussels sprouts do, but that might be an option. Roast it, squeeze of lemon, bit of extra virgin olive oil, some herbs....
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

You know, I am in pretty much a constant rage about Ken Burns' 19-hour documentary "Jazz," which refused to recognize or acknowledge the influence or even existence of jazz beyond American borders. How absurd and outrageous!!!

Somebody, talk me of the ledge!

Been a lotta earthquakes in the past couple of weeks, no?

@James that might make it more palatable but not sure @Doug i've heard you say that - I thoroughly agree - in fact I've quoted you re that

Yes there has been Doug. And this one hit just minutes ago. ptwc.weather.gov...
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

I was so mad, my first WFMU Marathon premium after that "Jazz" documentary came out was a compilation of amazing improvisation from around the world. I called it...

Jazz Burns Ken
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:55am northguineahills:

Ken Burns also didn't cover any jazz after 1958, either.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Meanwhile, there's this (which hits a little close to home): www.nbcnews.com...

@northguineahills
That's not quite right. Ken Burns had Branford Marsalis badmouth Cecil Taylor for about 30 seconds. That was post-1958.
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:00am Cecile:

That's what you get when you have Wynton Marsalis as your jazz guide.

  Fri. 4/18/14 11:02am Cecile:

Branford actually did a nice doc where free jazz was covered respectfully. He is not the traditionalist his brother is.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

@Cecile
And Stanley Crouch and Albert Murray. Jeez! Could Burns have assembled a group of smaller-minded people? (Rhetorical question, no need to respond.)

Branford was pretty awful toward "free jazz" in the Burns doc. Maybe he felt the need to apologize.
Avatar    Fri. 4/18/14 11:04am holland oats:

how many times does wynton say "it's like gumbo" in that thing, maybe 30?
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:05am Cecile:

I heard he really liked Ornette and Steve Lacy. I never saw Jazz so I don't know.
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:05am northguineahills:

Hasn't Branford played w/ William Parker?
Avatar Fri. 4/18/14 11:06am Holly in NC:

@ndbob - I bet my mother could've converted you with "Aunt Edna's Broccoli Casserole" - 2 boxes frozen chopped broccoli (defrosted) mixed w. an entire large box of Velveeta, cubed - topped with 1 cylinder of Ritz crackers (crushed) and a whole stick of melted butter. 50s white trash food at its finest. Haven't had in years but I bet I could still eat the whole (9x13) pan.

btw I LOVE broccoli. After ages of lightly steaming, roasting, sauteeing etc I've been rediscovering loooonnnng braising (i.e., making mush) which is sinfully good. I get plenty of vitamins elsewhere :-)
  Fri. 4/18/14 11:06am Cecile:

Good Finnish pronunciation, Doug

OK, now I'm really leaving. May try & comment from phone, but will be throwing balls for a hyperactive lab so probably not.

"Hyperactive lab?" You mean meth?
Avatar    Fri. 4/18/14 11:09am ndbob:

@Holly hmm.. I don't know - I cant handle velveeta, but some slightly less processed cheese food would be fine - I'd certainly go with the Ritz crackers and butter though:) Yesterday was one of the rare two green veggies days for me - asparagus and snow peas

Not so sure that David S. Ware getting signed to Columbia was a good thing. Pretty sure Ware didn't have positive things to say about it. I could be wrong, but that is my recollection.
