Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Contrary view: although I enjoy/admire much of SD's work, I deem them ground zero of the utter deflation of rock music. Post-SD anybody who didn't have the gumption or wherewithal to rock the hell out just chilled and hoped folks would play along. See, e.g., U2, Radiohead.

@MME - I developed an ambivalence towards SD but lately I think their music is more sophisticated than I previously gave credit. I agree that post SD their has been a definite 'safe' rock mode of the like you mention. Inhabited by countless 'successful' bands,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
listener jeff:

I so feel like this Merle song right now....
  1:30pm
Mother May Eye:

@BiUK: Indeed, "Rock" sounds like a brand conjured by a marketing consultant. But I don't think RnR died, nor do I think SD are guilty of attempted genrecide. Rather, SD helped to legitimize so "cool" an approach to rock music--bolstered by the overt enlistment of superb, virtuoso studio musicians--that former wannabe headbangers decided instead not to fret too much about pushing boundaries (of volume, speed, vocal excess). Yes, @Stanley, precisely. And of course "sophisticated" is a double-edged word...
