Seems like the smaller and medium-sized cities and towns often used to get the more adventurous and risk-taking commercial stations (WOXY in Ohio, WEQX in Vermont, the old WHFS in Annapolis/Baltimore), while NYC has the most boring commercial stations perhaps because they're so expensive to buy and require so much investment.

Odd how draftees were abused on arriving back from Vietnam and now volunteers from Iraq or Afghanistan are thanked openly.

Brian, I think people figured out that blaming soldiers for the war was divisive and didn't address the real problem. It's nice to know that some things have improved.

@Brian as a country we had such a guilt complex for blaming the troops for the crimes of the politicians that we over-compensated with the troops coming back from the most recent politician's crimes. Seems we haven't learned much.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 11:33am

@Cecile now it is how to save money with a reserve force. We over here could learn from yourselves in this respect.

@Brian I take that back. We stopped the politicians from putting more criminal boots into Syria. Yeah for us.

PJ:

Brian, you are relying on what appears to be an urban myth; there is no evidence that returning Vietnam veterans were spat on or otherwise abused by war protestors. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spitting_Image.
  11:35am

Oh, Jesse. I saw him when he was a draft dodger, and still a kid, at the Yellow Door in Montreal.

It's interesting/disgusting to see the next wave of marketing effort toward the next big weapons/military spending.

Thanks Joe. It's hard to believe now the kind of warm press attention and coverage greeted Jesse when he returned from Canada in the late 70s.
Avatar 11:37am
Whooda:

@PJ you might want to check to see how long it took for a Vietnam memorial to be erected anywhere, much less Washington.
Avatar 11:37am
Cecile:

PJ, maybe the spitting didn't happen.
And a lot of vets joined the antiwar movement when they got back. I think more that it was they were ignored and kind of disrespected. People didn't want to face what happened.
Avatar 11:37am
northguineahills:

wait, How did Doug play this Laura track back in Oct?
Avatar 11:38am

Even the more established vets organizations looked a bit askance at the 'nam vets. THey eventually warmed up (and died off, to be honest).

@PJ I was listening to a programme just the other day and a returning draftee had the spitting experience, that was what I based my comment on.

Whooda: the Vietnam War Memorial was dedicated in 1982, seven years after the end of the war (I happened to be there as well.) I'm not sure what your point is - it was decades before memorials to WWII or Korea were constructed.

Joe, people were so afraid to make records that rocked on major labels in the 80s that it was a shame. The Scorchers and Lone Justice really suffered. And I might be a special snowflake, but I think Mitchell Froom was the worst thing to happen to roots-rock EVER.
  11:47am

Cecile: People in general don't want to face what happens during war. There certainly isn't a terrible amount of interest in the US about what happened during the Iraq War or after or in Afghanistan now.

@PJ Currently there is more interest being paid to the centenary of the First World War. Why do we love anniversaries with round numbers.
Avatar 11:50am
Cecile:

I loved the Georgia Satellites record so much as a reaction. They weren't the best band, but their production was PERFECT. And it rocked.

PJ: yeah, right now Gulf War and Iraq/Afghanistan vets are plot points on drama shows. But apart from the occasional thing on the Military Channel, there's next to no context about what's happening, how we are fighting, etc..
