I grew up with Z-95!!! I remember when they got a lot of backlash for being a little too "New Wave" in the early 80s and people started to deface their bumper stickers.

Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 10:23am Whooda:

I stepped away, what are we watching?
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:23am Ike:

Seems like the smaller and medium-sized cities and towns often used to get the more adventurous and risk-taking commercial stations (WOXY in Ohio, WEQX in Vermont, the old WHFS in Annapolis/Baltimore), while NYC has the most boring commercial stations perhaps because they're so expensive to buy and require so much investment.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:23am kat330:

@DCE: Did you catch them in any earlier time? As they article noted, they initially only did about 30 shows total that maybe 1,000 people saw.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:25am DCE:

no, I'm not aware if they'd ever come to Cleveland in the early incarnation
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 10:25am Adrian in London:

This sounds like Messham's Wall of Death. My wife took a ride on it: spectaclemagazine.com... Scroll down to the second story. She's braver than me!

Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 10:34am Michele:

HI JOE!!!
  Thu. 4/10/14 10:35am KP:

The second Blue Cheer album is pretty good too but then guitarist Leigh Stephens quit (never to be heard from again). They meandered around for while but went back to power trio, pretty great one too judging by bootlegs

Always liked this Secret Affair song! I might even have a copy somewhere. Thanks for playing it.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:36am Marcel M:

Randy Holden eventually joined Blue Cheer, but he never shined with them like he did on his solo record Population 2. That record is amazing.

Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:52am maestroso:

First Adriano song I've heard that wasn't "Prisencolonensenainciusol"... I like it
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:52am kat330:

"And another time close the door" according to Google Translate.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 10:53am Joe McG:

Google says "Another Time Close the Door," which doesn't quite make sense.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 10:53am Alessia:

He's singing to his friend about the girl they are both in love with, Adriano is pretty sure that even if his friend is taking her away, she will run back to him, because he can take a body away but the mind stays where the person you love is. Adriano is also asking his friend to go away and close the door.

Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 10:57am Alessia:

Yes, and "un'altra volta" in this case translates with "again" which means that he supposedly asked for his friend to go away a couple of times already.. You are welcome! :)

@kat330: welcome to the gutter!

Billy Jack was a bad-ass and I think he even rode a bike...but no bitches.

The Legend of Billy Jack was actually a sequal

Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:04am βrian:

Nay, he rode a motorcycle.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:06am mariano:

Billy Jack was a Native American master of Hapkido and a Green Beret 'Nam vet. Can't have your bases more covered than that when it comes to badassery!

Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:07am Whooda:

@Brian I'm pretty sure he had cool lowrider schwinn with the chain steering wheel, tassles on the hand grips and sweet chopper forks chromed up. The playing card in the spokes just made it *sound* like a motorcycle :)
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:08am βrian:

Hey, Cecile. Are the smelt still running?
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:08am mariano:

@kat330: I like the doorknob bit too, very graphic!

I agree, Ike, a very strong album!

I'd love to hear something else from the new Laura album
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:19am Joe McG:

@Davee: That's a request, and I may even honor it before the end of the show!
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:21am Brian in UK:

Have to agree, Laura has never sounded better. Shame John Peel cannot hear her.
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:22am Dean:

Second Davee's request.

Lovin' this set, Joe. It sounds like driving around with my brother.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:26am Joe McG:

@Greg: Is your brother a truck driver by chance?
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:27am Brian in UK:

Odd how draftees were abused on arriving back from Vietnam and now volunteers from Iraq or Afghanistan are thanked openly.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:28am Sigurdur:

Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:29am Cecile:

nice. Waylon sings the truth.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:30am Cecile:

Brian, I think people figured out that blaming soldiers for the war was divisive and didn't address the real problem. It's nice to know that some things have improved.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:31am Brian in UK:

.....and kiss the children for me.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:31am Whooda:

@Brian as a country we had such a guilt complex for blaming the troops for the crimes of the politicians that we over-compensated with the troops coming back from the most recent politician's crimes. Seems we haven't learned much.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:33am Brian in UK:

@Cecile now it is how to save money with a reserve force. We over here could learn from yourselves in this respect.

Ahhhhh Jesse. Great first album.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:33am Joe McG:

Sending good vibes to Jesse, who isn't feeling too well.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:33am Ike:

Nicely put, Cecile@11:30.

Jesse A draft dodger?
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:34am earrie:

PR (and related) is a multi bililion dollar industry in 2014. It sure wasn't then.

Places everybody. Annnnnd: action!
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:34am Whooda:

@Brian I take that back. We stopped the politicians from putting more criminal boots into Syria. Yeah for us.
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:34am PJ:

Brian, you are relying on what appears to be an urban myth; there is no evidence that returning Vietnam veterans were spat on or otherwise abused by war protestors. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spitting_Image.
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:35am KP:

Oh, Jesse. I saw him when he was a draft dodger, and still a kid, at the Yellow Door in Montreal.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:35am earrie:

It's interesting/disgusting to see the next wave of marketing effort toward the next big weapons/military spending.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:35am Cecile:

Thanks Joe. It's hard to believe now the kind of warm press attention and coverage greeted Jesse when he returned from Canada in the late 70s.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:37am Whooda:

@PJ you might want to check to see how long it took for a Vietnam memorial to be erected anywhere, much less Washington.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:37am Cecile:

PJ, maybe the spitting didn't happen.
And a lot of vets joined the antiwar movement when they got back. I think more that it was they were ignored and kind of disrespected. People didn't want to face what happened.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:37am northguineahills:

wait, How did Doug play this Laura track back in Oct?
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:38am Cecile:

Even the more established vets organizations looked a bit askance at the 'nam vets. THey eventually warmed up (and died off, to be honest).
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:39am Joe McG:

@ngh: He's connected!
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:39am KP:

Jesse was pardoned by Jimmy Carter. I saw him again soon after that on a huge bill at Tanglewood. He was having the time of his life and so was the crowd,
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:39am Cecile:

Doug spelled backwards is Goud.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:39am Brian in UK:

@PJ I was listening to a programme just the other day and a returning draftee had the spitting experience, that was what I based my comment on.

How bad is Jesse?
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:39am blee:

Loving this set, Joe. Grand show you've got here.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:40am Joe McG:

Thanks there, blee!
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:40am Brian in UK:

Shall we call him Dog.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:40am ranjit:

Ditto! Also, it turns out you can whistle "Yakity Sax" along with this Connie Smith song and it works pretty well.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:41am Cecile:

hahahahah, Brian, we should probably run it by him first as he is Goud.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:41am northguineahills:

This set is great for unfogging my brain. Thanks Joe!
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:41am Davee:

Thank you
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:42am KP:

Wow I did not know he was in fact still alive. Amazing how these things get out there
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:42am Cecile:

Brian, he's really sick. Not a good prognosis.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:43am Kurt Gottschalk:

ahhhh... i was walking down the street and couldn't check, but i knew i recognized sweet laura's voice.
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:43am PJ:

Whooda: the Vietnam War Memorial was dedicated in 1982, seven years after the end of the war (I happened to be there as well.) I'm not sure what your point is - it was decades before memorials to WWII or Korea were constructed.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:44am Cecile:

this is a different side to Lone Justice. I really did not like their studio recordings
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:44am Whooda:

@Brian we are using Greystone (Blackwater) mercenaries in Ukraine now.

Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:45am Joe McG:

@Cecile: This is by far the best stuff they ever did and it FINALLY has come out! Hooray!
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:45am Brian in UK:

Cecile I did not know, not another bluddy tribute show on FMU coming up. Never saw him but I felt he is a decent fella.
Thu. 4/10/14 11:46am Kristin in Berlin:

Lovely set!!
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:47am Cecile:

Joe, people were so afraid to make records that rocked on major labels in the 80s that it was a shame. The Scorchers and Lone Justice really suffered. And I might be a special snowflake, but I think Mitchell Froom was the worst thing to happen to roots-rock EVER.
  Thu. 4/10/14 11:47am PJ:

Cecile: People in general don't want to face what happens during war. There certainly isn't a terrible amount of interest in the US about what happened during the Iraq War or after or in Afghanistan now.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:48am Joe McG:

@Cecile: You are so right.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:48am Joe McG:

Hi, Kristin in Berlin!
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:50am Whooda:

@PJ Wikileaks " Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from December 1956[A 1] to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975" that's 29 years between the start of the war and the memorial.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:50am Brian in UK:

@PJ Currently there is more interest being paid to the centenary of the First World War. Why do we love anniversaries with round numbers.
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:50am Cecile:

I loved the Georgia Satellites record so much as a reaction. They weren't the best band, but their production was PERFECT. And it rocked.

PJ: yeah, right now Gulf War and Iraq/Afghanistan vets are plot points on drama shows. But apart from the occasional thing on the Military Channel, there's next to no context about what's happening, how we are fighting, etc..
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:51am Cecile:

Speaking of someone who should be on her deathbed...
Avatar    Thu. 4/10/14 11:52am Brian in UK:

Jason Isbell has been giving it some context in his songs in recent years.

Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:54am Whooda:

Last word; we didn't want to acknowledge the war because we got our asses whooped and we blamed it all on the soldiers.

Is that the time, McGasko you have done me again. Great show.
Avatar Thu. 4/10/14 11:55am mariano:

I like what Kevin Kline said in Fish Called Wanda: We did not lose Vietnam! It was a tie!

@Cecile: I concur about the Georgia Satellites.

Thanks for another wonderful morning, Joe!

  Thu. 4/10/14 11:56am PJ:

Whooda: I don't know where you're getting the "we blamed it all on the soldiers" bit. My recollection is that people, in general, blamed it all on the politicians and the generals.
