  Wed. 4/30/14 7:21pm Jerel:

Gary, I just want you to know I'm counting on you as I design my thesis book.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:23pm Gary:

Jerel! Good luck with your thesis. I WAS JUST IN YOUR OLD NECK OF THE WOODS, btw: Seattle. Flying in, you wonder where in the forest they put the city
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:24pm Gary:

Samira placed 18 out of 19 in 1980's Eurovision Song contest.
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:25pm Jerel:

Thank you, I will need it. We are in the final weeks basically. I heard about the massive 45 haul from the NW. GOOD WORK! I do miss it out there.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:25pm Gary:

Two years later, she was singing this record. Not her first, btw; it's her fifth. But it's the oldest recording of hers I have.
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:28pm davex:

She was apparently also the only representative of Morocco ever at Eurovision.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:28pm Gary:

And hardly typical Moroccan sound, at that.
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:32pm hyde:

mispronouncing "pronounce"--now *that's* ironic
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:35pm Gary:

You say "pronounce," I say "PROW-nee-uh-en ... chee?"
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:36pm doca:

Hi, Gary! Just as a note, but I really would like to hear 40-minute songs on your show
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:37pm Doug Schulkind:

Loving this. Deeply.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:37pm Gary:

Doca, I promise to make the long song more of a regular part of the show. God knows, I've got a bunch of em.
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:38pm hyde:

whoa, i think i need the soundtrack to "Awaara"
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:39pm Gary:

Everyone should WATCH Awaara, is my spiel for the eve. It's a great, great, great movie.
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:39pm doca:

You should extend the limit of the songs little by little. Today, 10 minutes; next week, 20, and so on, until you play one of those 5 hour Indian ragas
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:40pm Gary:

Jesse played a half hour raaga one night that completely blew me away. Turned out he knew the guy who recorded it (on I think guitar)
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:41pm doca:

Oh cool, Bryce used to play a lot of 40-min or 1-hour ragas on his show too
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:42pm Jill B.:

I just put Awaara in my Netflix queue as #1. Hope it stays there!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:43pm Gary:

Yay, Mom!
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:43pm doca:

I always wanted to see Enthiran. Bollywood sci-fi flicks must be awesome.
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:45pm hyde:

I just put Awaara in my queue too. I am so under schooled in Bollywood films...
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:45pm Gary:

I just Googled Enthiran, Doca ... must see!
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:47pm davex:

Comet, it makes your mouth turn green...
  Wed. 4/30/14 7:47pm doca:

I fall short too on Bollywood, this one (Enthiran) just came across me some time because it is sci-fi.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:49pm Gary:

It's alarming how much you can cram into one 10-minute Bollywood song
Wed. 4/30/14 7:49pm listener james from westwood:

What little I've seen of Enthiran was insane. Presence of Aishwarya Rai didn't hurt at all.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:49pm carol:

man this is great!!
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:51pm hyde:

I have at least seen Sholay (which is truly amazing!) and a handful of others, but I need to do some homework on Indian films someday
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:51pm Uncle Michael:

Bogey at 7:00!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:52pm Gary:

Next set's for you, Michael!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:53pm Gary:

Yes, Sholay -- ungodly great. Hyde, when I saw Amitabh Bachchan live at Lincoln Center, it was like seeing the Beatles in terms of audience response. Screaming for a solid 15 mins
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 7:54pm Gary:

Amitabh = the tall guy in Sholay
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:55pm pacific standard simon:

Oops, late. Not used to not working on Wednesday. Hi Gary!

No mayhem, Michael?
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:57pm hyde:

canistreamit seems to say that Awaara is not available to stream, at least on the usual suspects like Netflix, Amazon, hulu, etc
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest on the archive
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:57pm Uncle Michael:

Amitabh was in 180 movies and I've only seen one. I NEED MORE TIME

I don't know why this is for me but damn, I like this.
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 7:59pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:08pm Gary:

Michael, I'll have to send it to you. Which reminds me, I owe you the Cui Jian album, too. Will try to put these together after the show tonight!
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 8:09pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Gary. I'd love to hear all of any and all volumes of Taiwan Indie x NYC.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:10pm Gary:

I got both!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:10pm Gary:

Anyone else want in on this, lemme know -- and send me your email if I don't got it. I can't post it to the blog cuz it's so new ... but I'll share with a few of youse
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 8:11pm Uncle Michael:

This is great too. It's got a Neu! thing going on.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:12pm Holly in NC:

You are lucky you CAN'T see me, Gary. Gross & sweaty after working all day to clean out a dead man's office - he was a tenured professor AND worked for the state dept AND was a hoarder. And a squaredancer. I have miles and miles to go.

Plus was woken up by tornado warning @ 5 am, and then again at 5:20 when my next door neighbor called to invite me over to her basement (I don't have a basement, just a nasty cave cricket-filled crawl space) .I demurred, but no more sleep for me. But also no tornado, thank goodness :-)
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:12pm Gary:

Saw these guys -- or gals, actually -- at Brooklyn Bowl with Cibo Matto last ... month, I think? They rawked so hard.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:12pm Gary:

Whoa, Holly -- that just sounds too intense
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:13pm Holly in NC:

Would love some (musical) Junk, kind Sir Gary!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:14pm Gary:

You got it, Holly
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:14pm Jill B.:

Good grief Holly, you have some of the strangest and most amazing experiences there in NC! Hoarders have to be the worst!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:15pm carol:

this is awesome too!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:15pm Gary:

The woman in the office next to mine is a hoarder. Piles of paper that go up over her head. You almost can't see her in there. Also tschotschkes (grrr, how do you spell that?!?), thousands of them.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:18pm Holly in NC:

Hi Jill !
I am, er, a hoarder myself. For real. But oddly I am superb at cleaning/organizing /tossing other folks' stuff. There is no logic.
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:18pm Jill B.:

Wow! that was great!!!!!
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:19pm Jill B.:

Hey Holly, I'm married to a semi-hoarder.........he is only allowed to put his stuff in specific designated areas!
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 8:21pm hyde:

someone posted pics of Kim's Video with its closing signs up the other day, and it made me really sad. I loved that place.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:21pm Kevlicki:

J&R just closed the music section of its store downtown
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:21pm doca:

Guys, could you tell me what a hoarder is?
Wed. 4/30/14 8:21pm listener james from westwood:

I had a trainee who, after 18 months of failing to launch, my boss finally consented to fire. The trainee was a bad hoarder. She had to make 5 trips down to her similarly crap-clotted car w her personal effects. I spent another 3 days organizing the unfiled and disorganized work papers she left behind, followed by another day of disinfecting her now empty workspace. Horrifying.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:22pm Kevlicki:

THey've also closed that location for renovations. Which I hope will reopen and not slowly die like so many other NY owned institutions
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:22pm Gary:

Yes, Kevlicki, that's right -- everywhere! And I think St. Marks Books is dying
Wed. 4/30/14 8:23pm listener james from westwood:

Holly, very glad you had no twister. It's sounded horrific thru certain areas.
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:23pm Jill B.:

Doca, it is someone who accumulates and accumulates and accumulates stuff, stuff and more stuff, until there is not more room to move!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:23pm Gary:

Doca, a hoarder is someone who keeps like EVERY copy of the newspaper, forever. And just stores it. They hoard things. What my mom said ^
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:24pm doca:

And you're always talking about food, so I need to say I made a big bowl of guacamole to watch tonight's game (I'm very happy with it eheh)
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:24pm Gary:

This set goes out to Doug
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:24pm Kevlicki:

St Marks Books had to be rescued by it's community. Their landlord, NYU I believe wanted to jack the rent exhorbitantly
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:25pm doca:

Yeah, I got it. I'm always impressed by those guys on Discovery Home & Health who lose guard over their sons and daughters because they just HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF ON THEIR HOUSES
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:25pm Jill B.:

Yes, like all kinds and sizes of wood....he calls it someday wood. I'm loving Omenana!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:26pm Holly in NC:

@doca - & then some more stuff - and throwing *anything* out is incredibly painful. Really painful. That's why my skill in organizing other people's lives is so mind-boggly bizarre.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:26pm Gary:

Yes, I remember that, Kevlicki. They're struggling again and I think have started one of those Kickstarter things. Not a good sign.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:27pm Kevlicki:

Has anyone heard any rumors about the Strand?
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:28pm Gary:

It's funny that the two main convo streams going on here involve people accumulating too much stuff and the death of the places where we in the drummer circle get some of our stuff that we like to accumulate
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:28pm doca:

@Holly: and you really work doing this? I mean, you should have a really terminal hoarding condition to have to call another person to sort out your stuff.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:28pm Gary:

Strand seems okay
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:29pm Jill B.:

Yes, Gary, but your stuff is different and grand!
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 8:30pm Uncle Michael:

I hoard guacamole.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:31pm Holly in NC:

I am getting ready to make dinner & just read about the gentleman who had his wife's placenta for breakfast (smoothie & taco). I'm still working my head around that, and I don't know why, I'm fine with non-human offal. The pictures were not especially appetizing.

Egg salad & chopped (chicken) liver it is. And Surryano ham (American smoked prosciutto, delicious x10000).
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:32pm Gary:

I just had Texas toast.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 8:32pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - I reaaly do, & I'm too embarrassed to call anyone to my house, for obvious reasons.
  Wed. 4/30/14 8:33pm doca:

@Holly: as far as I know, Tom Cruise ate Katie Holmes placenta, isn't it?
@Uncle Michael: Guacamole won't accumulate anywhere here, fortunately (we'll just eat the whole of it)
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 8:34pm hyde:

I really like the phrase "i'm fine with non-human offal"
Wed. 4/30/14 8:36pm listener james from westwood:

Sorry, keep getting called away for dinner prep. I don't remember if it was the end of the old series or early in the new, but it was in the past couple of years. The Bourdain Portugal show, I mean.
Wed. 4/30/14 9:30pm listener james from westwood:

Gary, what a haul you pulled in from that shop!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:30pm Gary:

Thanks, Simon -- used to be able to get all of the last series on maybe Netflix

Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 9:33pm hyde:

yeah, the Portugal Bourdain is from the Travel Channel years. It should be out there in the ether...
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:34pm Gary:

Awrighty, I'll check it out. It's even possible that I saw it -- I went through that series, as much as I was able to get from the library and through Netflix when it was available ...

Gary, have you read accounts of Oum's funeral? Over a million turned out. Authorities kept her death secret for many days, fearing a riot.
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:50pm Gary:

Doug! Yes, here's one here, with an insane photo of the crowd:centouryeng.canalblog.com...
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:51pm Gary:

Dave! That's a great resource, thank you
  Wed. 4/30/14 9:52pm Doug Schulkind:

I misspoke. Some reports indicated the crowd swelled to more than TWO million.
Avatar    Wed. 4/30/14 9:54pm davex:

Thank you, Gary, for the music!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:54pm Gary:

It angers me that there are basically only two books in English having to do with her: Virginia Danielson's Voice of Egypt and a translation of Selim Nassib's I Loved You for Your Voice
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:54pm northguineahills:

Beautiful sounds, thanks Gary!
Avatar Wed. 4/30/14 9:56pm Gary:

  Wed. 4/30/14 9:58pm Doug Schulkind:

I think you could fit about 100 Beyoncés in Oum's right pinky.
