Evening, Carmichael, pss, P-90.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:08pm Ike:

Hello. I got the trifecta earlier today, switching back & forth between 91.1, 90.1, and 91.9 FM. Some parts of Ramsey, Ringwood, etc. get all 3, but no single one of them is clear everywhere around there, hence the switching back & forth.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:08pm Droll:

pss, I love hockey! GOOOOOAAAAALLLLLLLL!!
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:09pm Dave Mandl:

Hey Ike, Droll.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:10pm Cubicle Carl:

The window of getting any FM signal clear is very small.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:11pm Dave Mandl:

I get a solid signal in Middle Brooklyn, but I tend to listen online anyway.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:12pm JakeGould:

Solid as a rock on 91.1FM out here in Bay Ridge.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:14pm Cubicle Carl:

Bay Ridge is pretty good, and much of Brooklyn is good, but since I only drive through the area, I find that if traffic is clear, I only have 10-15 mins. of good FM.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:15pm Dave Mandl:

I would think Bay Ridge would be excellent. You're right near the water, pretty clear path to our transmitter.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:16pm Ike:

Some weekends, I find the area around Flatbush and Kensington harsh listening for FMU because of that scumbag Haitian pirate at 90.9 causing interference. But I was there on a Monday evening recently and they weren't on.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:17pm Ike:

Correction: Wednesday, not Monday.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:22pm JakeGould:

Hey Dave, I’m not right near the water. But up on the 4th floor of a building that just gets good signals. My 4G LTE speed on my phone goes up to 18Mbps which is just nuts.
  Sun. 4/6/14 10:23pm P-90:

Either that CD is skipping or that goddamn Hatian pirate is at it again
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:24pm Droll:

I know you said not to complain, but I had to come back from the kitchen to say I want another track from a band that really blows.

Long-time Tony Williams Lifetime fan here!
  Sun. 4/6/14 10:33pm P-90:

Very K. Crimsonish guitar thing going on there
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:35pm Dave Mandl:

Funnily enough, Robert Fripp was a big fan of McLaughlin.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:40pm Droll:

Fripp interviewing McLaughlin: www.elephant-talk.com...
  Sun. 4/6/14 10:40pm P-90:

Yeah, they've had a mutual admiration thing going since the old days. This is not the first time I've heard john McL. play something that was strikingly Frippian....tempting to guess Fripp got more inspiration from McL. than the other way 'round, but who knows?
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:42pm Dave Mandl:

Listen to the opening guitar chords of Crimson's "Red." It *is* John McLaughlin.

Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:44pm Dave Mandl:

Sorry, I don't mean literally. I mean Fripp sounds exactly like him.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:47pm Droll:

Yes and no... By then Fripp was using his New Standard Tuning, so there are lots of chord voicings and intervals in KC never heard from the hand of McLaughlin. Having said that, yes, the similarity is striking.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:48pm Cubicle Carl:

Dylan once said that this is what his real voice sounds like and the rest was a put on.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 10:49pm Droll:

And by "striking similarity" I don't mean the legal term for plagiarism.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:49pm Dave Mandl:

@Carl: It's like two octaves lower.
@Droll: Too late!
  Sun. 4/6/14 10:56pm Carmichael:

Dave, thanks for the Sandy Denny. Great memories.
  Sun. 4/6/14 10:56pm P-90:

McLaughlin was very influential among the prog guitar players, Steve Howe describes the guitar intro to Close to the Edge as his favorite bit (of his) ever, and it may be the most directly Mclaughlin-inspired thing he's ever done
Sun. 4/6/14 10:57pm Ed in Scotchland:

Funnily enough, I used to stay only a few more minutes walk away from Rupert St...
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 10:59pm Dave Mandl:

@Carichael: Any time.
@P-90: I didn't know that about Steve Howe. That's very interesting.
@Ed: Very cool. Maybe you can find some more of those tapes?

OK, Giants lost, life sucks, I'm here. Also, I missed some good music... :(
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:05pm Carmichael:

I saw Fairport one time many years ago in a barn in Northern california. Simon Nicol announced the break, took off his guitar and sat down next to me. He asked if I would stay for the remainder of the show. I laughed.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:07pm Carmichael:

Is this Terry and Gay Woods? Yoish, you're killing it, Dave!

Simon, congrats to you AND your wife!
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:14pm P-90:

She WILL be expecting a nice piece of jewelry set with precious stone(s) for the big three-oh, start saving up
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:16pm Droll:

Carm, Uhhh, she may not be as excited as Simon after 29 years. Can you imagine having a FMU listener spouse?
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:16pm pacific standard simon:

@P-90 - If I did that, she would go all Invasion-Of-The-Body-Snatchers on me -- "WHO ARE YOU?!"
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:19pm P-90:

like "what alien pod imposter
has replaced my pss!" ?
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:22pm pacific standard simon:

Dave, one thing I like about your show is that I never know what kind of mood you'll be in when you pick the music. A lot of DJs, you know what to expect -- and that's fine -- but YOU definitely have MOODS. It's a feature.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:23pm P-90:

Roger that, pss
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:25pm Droll:

The Final Stretch can't even be over two hours long anymore... This sucks. You go back to 3 hours when Glenn Jones does? Right?

And I still love email, and that $31M offer I sent you was totally legit, I'm bummed you didn't click the link.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:25pm phat:

I love this song!
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:25pm phat:

Sleaford Mods, amazing.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:26pm Dave Mandl:

@pss: Thanks. I put the show together on the fly in the few hours before showtime (as opposed to the few days before) for just that reason.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:30pm Cubicle Carl:

TV OD?
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:31pm Dave Mandl:

@CC: Haha. Close!
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:31pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: I did click on it. I'm headed off to Nigeria to pick up the money tomorrow.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:33pm pacific standard simon:

Sometimes I wonder what Andre Breton (a notorious music hater) would have thought if he could have heard music like this.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:35pm Droll:

pss, He would have hated it, of course.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:36pm mariano:

Breton hated music? Had no idea. As usual, another thing learned via FMU...
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:37pm Dave Mandl:

@Droll: Yeah, well who asked him?
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:38pm amEdeo:

I also immediately recognized this soundtrack as well.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:39pm mariano:

Solaris! Read the novel last year, waaaaaay trippier than even the Tarkovsky version, if you can imagine.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:42pm P-90:

Superior, sure, but why a duck?
Real cool that they did that Solaris on vinyl. of course I haven't had a turntable st up in years...
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:43pm pacific standard simon:

I had an obsession, in school, with wanting to play The Trashmen's "Surfin' Bird" for Kurt Schwitters.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

It's imposible to stump @amEdeo.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:43pm Dave Mandl:

Also "impossible."
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:44pm pacific standard simon:

Keep it unpredictable, Mr. Mandl-with-no-e.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:44pm P-90:

I'll come out of the Rasberries fanatic closet right here and now, I don't care who knows
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:45pm earrie:

Thanks Dave. Early, belated and exactly on the beated time.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:45pm pacific standard simon:

Me too, though more for the 45s than the albums.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:45pm Dave Mandl:

I forgot to mention Tarkovsky's Polaroids. I picked up a copy of the book recently. Really great.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:45pm Whooda:

@P-90 Thanks for coming out first. I have always thought of the Raspberries as terribly misunderstood.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:46pm P-90:

@ mariano: yes! Solaris is one of the greatest science fiction novels ever
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:46pm pacific standard simon:

Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:49pm Whooda:

@P-90 haha
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:50pm Dave Mandl:

Dutch, actually.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:51pm Droll:

This is XTC is Dutch?!?!
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:51pm pacific standard simon:

Ah.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:52pm mariano:

The Geuzen were the Dutch Protestants who went on to form the Netherlands we know today, right? As opposed to the Catholic Flemish.
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:52pm P-90:

Ja?
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:55pm pacific standard simon:

Well, there was at least one Dutch jerk named Hans who had a credit for background vocals on the English Settlement album.
Avatar    Sun. 4/6/14 11:56pm pacific standard simon:

He ended up being a huge internet troll and record label stooge.
Avatar Sun. 4/6/14 11:57pm Droll:

DM, Thanks for squeezing in some more bands that blow. I'll send you another email, thanks for clarifying you prefer it to Twitspace and Facester.

Have a fun week, see yinz soon!
  Sun. 4/6/14 11:58pm P-90:

Thnx, D
