Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 3:12pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

HOLY GOD, Cecile, I plunked on the headphones in the middle of that Clanton tune & thought it was Bobby Vinton at first -- Don't think I've heard The Master on FMU before.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 3:13pm Cecile:

remember Duane's show where they were talking about throwing up, and er, achieving an extremely pleasurable state at the same time through dance music? I think it might sounds a little like this.

@steve - I'm curious as hell!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 3:38pm Mike East:

I assumed the inventor himself.

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 3:59pm northguineahills:

Kurt, didn't you write a review of this concert?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 3:59pm Cecile:

I'll bet Braxton never thought he'd be on a track called "black vomit."
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:02pm Kurt Gottschalk:

no, but he requested the double bill!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:06pm Cecile:

this is a great, great track. Love that album.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:06pm Andrew Waterloo:

Just found out Jesus Christ Superstar with Jon Lydon is coming to town this Spring.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:18pm Carmichael:

Hey, got here on the 8 exactly! Hiya Kurt and obedient followers.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:19pm Kurt Gottschalk:

didn't even know lydon was doing jcs. amazing.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:20pm Cecile:

phat, are you kidding?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:21pm Caryn:

Hello all! Busy with housework, which taught me 3 things:
- a knitting needle is good for checking when baked goods are ready (yep, knitting and baking... it's an exciting Friday over here)
-I suck at making frosting
-even bad frosting is delicious
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:21pm Cecile:

I gotta see that if it's true.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:22pm Kurt Gottschalk:

report back, cecile. i was wondering.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:23pm still b/p:

A cake of almost knitting needle height, one hopes.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:23pm Caryn:

This Marconi thing isn't going to be a trick question, is it? Like Marconi didn't have a volume knob on his radio at all? I say this, because having just sat through a documentary about Marconi yesterday (which included specs and details of patents), I can't remember a single mention of a volume control.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:24pm Cecile:

shit, it's true. John is King Herod and dude from Incubus is Judas.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:25pm Mark Helsten:

this looks good w sun ra doing hi ho..
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

ha, mark!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:25pm Kurt Gottschalk:

cecile, holy hell!
  Fri. 4/4/14 4:26pm phat:

Its true
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:26pm Carmichael:

Figured it out! The knob was called "The High Ho thingie".
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:26pm Kurt Gottschalk:

re: marconi, i have the answer that mn gif gave me, but i don't get it.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:26pm Kurt Gottschalk:

carms, ha!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:27pm Cecile:

this almost seems like an April Fool's joke.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:27pm Caryn:

Marconi didn't go all technical and just call it a potentiometer, or go all Edison and call it a rheostat, did he?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:27pm Mark Helsten:

Hi Kurt! I have the second star to the right at home! I think i will listen to it tonight. it's been years.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:27pm still b/p:

The funiculow-funiculoud.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:27pm Parq:

This Ra "Heigh Ho" is even better than their take on "Pink Elephants" on the "Stay Awake" set.
  Fri. 4/4/14 4:27pm phat:

I thought that too. But its in the local paper today.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:28pm Caryn:

@sbp: just cupcakes
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:28pm Cecile:

Yeah, I saw the write up in the Times, dated this AM.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:28pm steve:

Caryn - already asked (i assume the answer's no). Kurt when do we find out?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:31pm still b/p:

Then skewer and serve those babies 3 or 4 on a long needle for cupcabobs!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:33pm Carmichael:

Vernon Reid? Not the Vernon Reid guitar player from Living Color, right? There's another one, right?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:34pm Caryn:

@sp/b: oh, I need my needles for the actual knitting!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:34pm Kurt Gottschalk:

from living color, yes. part of a hal willner record.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:34pm Andrew Waterloo:

Vernon Reid was doing jazz before Living Color
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:35pm northguineahills:

Only took 28 hours to unclog my toilet, but at last success. Thank hades I was cat sitting the next door neighbor's cat, so I had a toilet to use.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:35pm Carmichael:

Wow, my mind is blown. Not even a cupcake skewer could fix me.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:36pm Caryn:

This JCS production sounds interesting, but I'm a bit concerned that Herod is now bound to overshadow everyone else, which is surely not the point of the show? It's like all the times Judas is better than anyone else (like in the movie, or when Tim Minchin did it).
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:36pm Cecile:

Carm, he did some really excellent jazz records before Living Color.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:37pm Carmichael:

It gives Lydon ample opportunity to run around screaming, "Jesus Christ!!"
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:37pm steve:

oof, that's rough ngh. as someone who lives in a really old building its one of my worst fears.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:38pm Carmichael:

Wow, thanks for the info. That must have been back in my *young and dumb* phase.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:38pm Caryn:

Isn't the Herod number all sort of 20s charleston-y? I somehow have a hard time imagining John Lydon doing that song.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:39pm Andrew Waterloo:

I wonder how many Sex Pistols fans cited Jesus Christ Superstar as part of the bullshit that sex Pistols were the solution to.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:40pm Carmichael:

@Caryn: I think that's the Pontius Pilate song, with all the flappers and jazz musicians. "So you are the Christ, Mr. Great Jesus Christ ..."?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:41pm Kurt Gottschalk:

i'm not goin' till johnny plays jesus
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:42pm Caryn:

@Carm: oh yeah, you may be right. Then what the heck does Herod sing?

@kurt: I'd hold out for Johnny as Judas. He's the cool one with the best songs.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:42pm Cecile:

Carm, if it's any consolation, his jazz records were on tiny labels that came out just before the NMDS folded.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:43pm common:

yay residents!
  Fri. 4/4/14 4:43pm emmagineering:

aw man, that anthony braxton wolf eyes thing was BRUTAL. thanks DJKG!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:43pm Kurt Gottschalk:

caryn, good point, but i think his acting would be better as christ.
  Fri. 4/4/14 4:43pm Andrew Waterloo:

they should get Marilyn Manson to play Jesus
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:44pm Cecile:

I just wish they'd reform Scratch Acid and Pegboy and have them do the whole thing.
For a few years members of various Minneapolis bands used to stage JCS on Good Friday.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:44pm Kurt Gottschalk:

haha emma, did that knock you out for an hour before you could post?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:44pm Cecile:

Eddie Vedder is kind of Jesus-like. In his own mind...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:44pm mariano:

@Carmichael: no that's Herod's song.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:45pm Caryn:

Hmm, Marconi... it's not the AVC switch, is it? Nah, that's one of the later ones.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:46pm Carmichael:

THanks, Mariano. It's been a long time, but it was mandatory viewing for us Irish Catholics. Played the album till it turned into vinyl spaghetti.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:46pm mariano:

Pilate had three songs: Pilate's Dream (great guitar work), the fist time they bring Jesus to him (Who is this broken man...), then the trial, when he tries to help Jesus.
  Fri. 4/4/14 4:47pm emmagineering:

at work emma is at working
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:47pm steve:

Caryn - what's the Marconi doc called? id like to see that.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:47pm Carmichael:

You could get Geldof to play JC. No, he thinks he's better suited as God. Maybe Bono intead ...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:47pm dale:

i have these last to rekkids from the day. does that make me old? now i wanna hear wendy and lisa
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:47pm Caryn:

In Sweden, Jesus was played by the lead singer of glam rockers The Ark. He was actually really good. (I somehow suspect someone would've complained in the US if a bisexual was cast as Jesus...)

@mariano: hey, so I was right the first time! Yay!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:48pm mariano:

@Carmichael: same here. As a kid in the early 70s, JCSS was playing in the house day in and day out. Probably why it's imprinted on my mind!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:48pm Cecile:

hahaha, they should all play Pilate.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:48pm still b/p:

Sister Mary Rupert (Grade 7) did not approve of our Lord being referred to as "JC" in the Hey-sanna Hosanna song.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:49pm Caryn:

@steve: it was an episode of a 4-part British documentary series about technological developments. Have no idea what the English-language name is, though (they replace the titles with Finnish ones).
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:50pm dale:

do you folks think there will be some right wing christian zealots picketing jcss?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:50pm Carmichael:

'Oos this Brummie Boy, eh?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:52pm common:

@dale: perhaps my mom and brother.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:52pm Cecile:

I think they should just have Ted Neely do it. He's been doing it here since '70.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:52pm common:

my mom picketed outside of our local theater when The Last Temtation of Christ came out. Hoof.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:52pm Caryn:

@dale: there's bound to be a couple of loons any time Jesus is even mentioned, right? But I doubt there'll be big pickets, unless there's some controversial staging, or Lydon does something crazy. Or unless they cast someone controversial as Jesus.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:53pm common:

Hey everyone...Beeeeeeeeeeersies!!!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:53pm mariano:

Here's a bit of JCSS trivia: on the original album, Herod is sung by Mike D'Abo, who was the singer for Manfred Mann's Earth Band, saing Mighty Quinn, etc. Also, in the album and movie, Pilate was played by Barry Dennen, who had a small part in The Shining, as Ullman's assistant, and Trading Places, the butler on the beach at the end of the movie.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:53pm Caryn:

My parents walked through Christian picket lines to go watch "Life of Brian".
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:56pm Carmichael:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:56pm Cecile:

have Feargal be Jesus.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:57pm Kurt Gottschalk:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:58pm steve:

thanks Caryn. googled and found the BBC doc on Youtube. looks like my kind of late night put-me-to-sleep viewing (i usually read electronics articles before bed, related vids are good too).
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:58pm Carmichael:

Feargal would really be flippin' the tables over in the bazaar!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 4:58pm dale:

farfel jesus? a ventriloquist interpretation of the life of christ!!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:03pm Cecile:

Get Terry Hall in there as someone, he still has the pipes.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:03pm still b/p:

Do Annabella Lwin of Bow Wow Wow and Claudia Brücken of Propaganda and Act sound quite similar sometimes?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:07pm northguineahills:

That was a nice Tetreault!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:08pm Caryn:

@steve: here's hoping it's the right one! Oh heck, even if it isn't, it'll probably be interesting!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:09pm steve:

i love boring technincal stuff
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:11pm Caryn:

@steve: same here. Just volunteered to help out at an ITS conference. Looking forward to endless sessions and lectures about transport technology.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:15pm steve:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:18pm Cecile:

Except for certain parts of Michael's career, the J5 were better together than apart.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:19pm Caryn:

I've had to favourite the whole show. Couldn't be helped.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:20pm Mike East:

aw man! my favorite santana song! what a gorgeous version!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:20pm Cecile:

Santana did this as well. It's doug's bed music.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:20pm northguineahills:

Caryn, you can help it!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:21pm Cecile:

as my math teacher once said "can't means don't want to"
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:21pm mariano:

Amazing how a different arrangement and approach can totally alter a song, but it's still recognizable.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:23pm Cecile:

really amazing.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:26pm northguineahills:

I can't equate Ken Ham as a genius on par w/ Stephen Hawking. There! tell that to your math teacher, Cecile!
  Fri. 4/4/14 5:26pm mary:

One of your very best shows! wow!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:27pm Carmichael:

I heard some other Worrell earlier this week on FMU. Just as restrained.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:30pm Cecile:

he's not a math teacher anymore. Or mayor of my hometown. He resigned amid scandal.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:30pm mariano:

This Ceramic Dog song reminds me of that Cheech & Chong one from "Up in Smoke," you know, the one where Cheech is in the pink tutu and Chong is at the drums, dressed in a tee shirt with a quaalude image on it.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:30pm Caryn:

@cecile: in this case, damn straight! On the other hand, I can't fly, but I'd certainly want to be able to do so...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:31pm Cecile:

every generation gets the Red Hot Chili Peppers it deserves.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:32pm Mike East:

I wish I had some ludes (shh...I have ludes, I just don't have enough)
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:33pm Cecile:

I loved the version of this song from Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:33pm mariano:

OMG!!! Is this the version from "Fabulous Stains," with a young Ray Winstone singing?!?

No, wait, that was the Looters they were called, wasn't it?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:34pm Cecile:

no, it's the original.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:34pm Carmichael:

So anyway, the volume knob ... "Oscillatin' Sumbitch"?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:35pm Carmichael:

Johnny Casino & the Gamblers.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:35pm mariano:

Thanks @Cecile: I love the movie version too, even the commercial version by the Stains at the end!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:37pm Cecile:

has that ever come out on DVD? I remember seeing it only once at 1:00 a.m. on USA Up All Night in the late 80s.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:37pm Cecile:

Yes!!!! it has!!!!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:40pm Carmichael:

Boogie on Bosnia!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:41pm mariano:

@Cecile: that's so funny, that's just how I saw it! Up All Night and Night Flight were a lifeline to the outside world in those pre-web days. First time I saw Rude Boy, Another State of Mind, footage of NY Dolls, great great show.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:41pm still b/p:

I saw bits of The Fabulous Stains re and rerun on Up All Night. I remember Fee Waybill in it describing something as, "Nectar, man, nectar..."
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:42pm Cecile:

well, Rhino put it out on DVD about 5 yrs ago, it looks like. Yeah, I'm up on stuff. :/
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:43pm Cecile:

I remember it being a mess, but really, really entertaining.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:43pm Mike East:

i rented Ladies and Gentlemen... last year. I had never seen it before.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:43pm Mike East:

loved it
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:44pm Cecile:

I remember Rolling Stone publishing all kinds of Random Notes about it, and then...nothing.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:45pm Cecile:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:45pm Caryn:

@mariano: that Ray Winstone thing makes me think of how many British stars started out in music. Seriously, Joe Belock could do one of his "celebrities at their best" just about Brits. Ricky Gervais, Craig Ferguson, Peter Capaldi, Vic Reeves,...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:45pm mariano:

I know you can get it from Netflix. Apparently Laura Dern ran away from home to be in the movie. It was definitely a shoestring budget, but it's such a cool snapshot of early 80s small-town America.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:46pm still b/p:

Did Judy just sing "by Gumm?"
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:46pm Cecile:

Goldie did quite a bit of acting. Wilko Johnson.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:46pm mariano:

@Caryn: Ricky Gervais started out in music? Had no idea! Gotta do some Googling!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:47pm Cecile:

I just ordered a cheap copy of The Stains cause I gotta have it.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:47pm Cecile:

perfect seg
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:48pm Carmichael:

If crazy Bruce Dern was my dad, I'd run away from home too.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:48pm still b/p:

Maybe you can make some choice Stains gifs for Ken when you get it.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:48pm Caryn:

@Cecile: true, but he's best known for the music. I'm thinking more about stars known for non-music stuff. Like Brian Cox.

@mariano: prepare to laugh at his haircut.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:50pm Marshall Stacks:

Thanks for the dBs, Kurt! Nice segue from Frances Gumm.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:50pm Cecile:

There are tons of people over here who have no idea what Dr. Feelgood it. It's quite interesting.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:52pm Parq:

Glad I made it back for this zippy final set. Take it, Pet.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:54pm mariano:

@Caryn: I thought you meant the older Brian Cox, the actor! And wow, can't believe that's Gervais, you were right about the hair!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:57pm northguineahills:

Dinner time, Thanks Kurt! Have a great weekend everyone!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:57pm Cecile:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:58pm Carmichael:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:58pm mariano:

Thanks Kurt, bye all!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 5:59pm Dan from Augusta:

Great show!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 6:00pm Mark Helsten:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 6:00pm Caryn:

@mariano: yep, and the clothes aren't taking away from the 80-ness of it all either! He also was the manager for Suede when they were starting out. Man...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 6:00pm Dan from Augusta:

Great show!
