Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 12:05pm Holly in NC:

Ola. Starting to cook my delicious crowdsourced lunch. Should I put capers in the wilted kale/hazelnuts, or will that clash? I love capers, but I fear a clash with the gouda/mushroom omelette.

The complete Motown singles collection is amazing - not just because of all the great music, but also for the inclusion of some really terrible records that never would have been reissued otherwise
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 12:29pm Gary:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 12:48pm Holly in NC:

Cooking & listening is hazardous.
That said, mushrooms sauteed in butter, beef tallow, thyme & a wee bit of cumin seed are the *bomb*. Gouda has been grated.
Currently slow-steaming minced broccoli florets & hunks of kale, and toasting hazelnuts. Dang this lunch is labor intensive!

@pss - I sent Mozilla a thank you tweet, and they very kindly replied :-)
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 12:49pm listener james from westwood:

Labor intensive but undoubtedly more satisfying to body and spirit than the dine & dash that so many workday lunches end up being!

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:01pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:04pm Holly in NC:

OK, the broccoli/kale/hazlenuts/browned butter/caper thing was a good idea for side dish, w/b perfect. Quick break before actual omelette making. Phew!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Sounds delicious, Holly...in spite of the kale. I don't get kale!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:06pm βrian:

I suggest a side of intelligent herring.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:07pm βrian:

Kale is masochistic and invites your abuse. Thus it grows sweet.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:08pm Uncle Michael:

I prefer my herring impaired.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:08pm Holly in NC:

@UM - kale could EASILY be omitted with no adverse consequences. And lemon c/b subbed for caper haters.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:08pm Holly in NC:

I bet George Jones would omit the kale.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:10pm ndbob:

@Holly I think more energy is going into your lunch then the effort I've put into cooking the last three years combined:)
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:11pm βrian:

Try a chiffonade of kale with toasted almonds and lemon vinaigrette. Citronette?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:11pm ndbob:

same weather here UM
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:11pm Alex In Illinois:

I prefere Kale to raw Spinach. Of course, if you cook either of them they are fine. And almost anything taste great if it s fried.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:16pm βrian:

Apropos of nothing, do any of you know of any bandoneon players in the Wisconsin area?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:16pm Holly in NC:

@ βrian - I know I'd love that!
@Alex - recipes are floating around the net for - wait for it - fried avocados!! The recipes I've seen use either cornflakes or panko for coating , as a non-grain eater I've been thinking about trying with some sort of ground nut coating...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:16pm ndbob:

I don't think I've ever eaten kale - I don't mind raw spinach
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:17pm Uncle Michael:

I love raw spinach. I haven't figured out how I like kale yet.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

Both go well in a berry/banana smoothie.
Great twist on this standard, UM!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:18pm Holly in NC:

I love this whole cd (behind closed doors)
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:18pm βrian:

This one sets my heart to fluttering:
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:20pm Uncle Michael:

Do you have the companion to that one, Holly?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:21pm βrian:

I think a nice sour mint/cilantro sauce would be good on those avocados.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:22pm still b/p:

I like this Gentle. I wonder how Hartford ranked all the covers.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:22pm Holly in NC:

@UM - first step - do NOT try the ubiquitous bagged kale available in all supermarkets, TJs, Costco, etc. It's nasty, bitter, and foul (and usually laden w pesticides). Wait till you can try some really fresh locally grown varieties - the difference is astonishing. Also, lacintino (aka dinosaur) kale is milder, has an easier texture to appreciate if you're not a greens fiend, and in fact can be used as a wrap.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

still b/p, he ranked them by royalties.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:23pm Holly in NC:

@UM - Sweet Dreams? I do!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

Good! And thanks for the kale tips.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:24pm Alex In Illinois:

Ivo Baldoni, in Menomonie Falls does not play Bandonian, but he repairs them along with any other type of squeeze box. So me might know.

Also Dr. Helmi Herrington of the World Accordion Museum up in Superior Wisconsin might know too. I know her focus is accordions, but she might know about Bandoneanists as well.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:26pm Holly in NC:

(girding loins) time to actually FINISH making lunch - 3+ hours after I started thinking about it. Yeesh!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:26pm still b/p:

Wiki-whoa! Dean Martin's version charted higher than Glen Campbell's! Patti Page did one. Aretha did one.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:26pm Uncle Michael:

Millie raising the hair on my neck...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:28pm βrian:

Thanks. I think we already tried the second source. We're really looking for the Spanish/Southern French style for a nuptial soirée. But this is Polka country.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:29pm Gary:

@UM: Drizzle some olive oil and spices over kale on a baking sheet. Put baking sheet in oven. Make semi-crispy. Eat with other stuff.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:32pm pacific standard simon:

How to make your worm glow -- strip ends of lamp cord; insert into each end of worm; plug lamp cord into wall socket. Voila!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:32pm Gary:

BTW, best song about glow worms of all time
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:32pm pacific standard simon:

Or substitute kale stalk.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:33pm Stevel:

The glow worm you want is in the limo.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:40pm pacific standard simon:

I don't know where you're going with this...

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:40pm βrian:

Traffic meets 70s detective show soundtrack?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:42pm Lizardner Dave:

Of course many people think the title of this is "Ken Freedman's Bed Music". Though he's started using a different Neu! song lately.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:43pm βrian:

Which reminds me, do you add juniper berries in your kraut?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:43pm Holly in NC:

Yay! Back to eat with Neu!
Gonna have to work hard to make @βrian's-inspired salmon salad as perfect as this.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:45pm Doug Schulkind:

I keep waiting to hear Ken Freedman. Doesn't he use this as a music bed?!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:45pm listener james from westwood:

Correct and correct, Dave. Ken used this one often enough during Marathon mic breaks that it half-makes me twitch toward my credit card.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:45pm Uncle Michael:

I had no idea. Honestly. Who the hell listens to Ken, anyway?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:46pm Not Ken:

Hey! We're not livin' in the Dark Ages. We have electricity.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Oops, Lizardner Dave. Misses you making the point earlier!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:47pm Holly in NC:

Oh and yes to homemade kale chips.
Plain are great. Smoked paprika even better. Dried coconut and curry spices best! Only problem is the chips loss crunch if you look at them funny, so only make what you'll eat in 1 sitting. Which is more than you think...
  Fri. 4/4/14 1:48pm jeff g:

I listen to Ken. I like when he gets all shouty.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:48pm Lizardner Dave:

If Uncle Michael follows up with "Concerto for Jew's Harp" it'll be just weird...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:48pm listener james from westwood:

I guess I should have said, "We have KHLAAAAAAAAM!"
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:48pm pacific standard simon:

Caraway seeds in das Kraut! OK, auf zu worken, ja! See ya, gang.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:49pm βrian:

Fried sage leaves, yo.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:49pm Uncle Michael:

I kid.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

See ya Simon!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:50pm βrian:

I Claudius, then.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:50pm Holly in NC:

@βrian: If your kraut query was aimed at me, usually, yes. If I'm subbing cumin seed for caraway seed (some silly folks I know don't like caraway), no.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:51pm pacific standard simon:

If I see EFD there, I'm makin' him WORK.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:52pm βrian:

Cumin, caraway, coriander — they're all carrots underneath.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:53pm βrian:

Ooh, I already like this better than the Clash.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:53pm Mike East:

@βrian juniper berries work well in onion gravy with sausages.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:55pm Uncle Michael:

I'm committed to including more contemporary releases on the show. I thought this was up to the level...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:56pm Holly in NC:

Hey, I like this cover, UM!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:56pm Brian in UK:

Yes UM, but I missed Hollywood Swinging. Oh boy.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 1:57pm βrian:

OK. How does one pronounce Neu! ? I've beard vehement arguments for both "new" and "noy", and then of course internet "how-to" sites are filled with trolls & pranksters who throw in a gazillion other variations.

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:11pm βrian:

They always tell me "nein." Not sure why.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:11pm Holly in NC:

@UM - too bad, there's a ton of odd ones!
And I was going to double dog dare you to to follow Newman with Chris Cross & 'Sailing', but alas, too late.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:12pm Uncle Michael:

I like that bit of yacht rock, Holly. Lovely record.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:14pm ndbob:

nice one here UM!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:15pm Doug Schulkind:

Gorsh do I love Randy Newman.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

I'm not sure you do!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:16pm Holly in NC:

Or as @Jeff would say rather than "yacht rock", Neu! rock ;-)
I like it too.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:16pm βrian:

I used to be deeply allergic to Randy Newman. Now I hear a certain charm.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

I've never understood the aversion some people have to him.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:18pm listener james from westwood:

Loving the set of the older stuff, too!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:18pm Uncle Michael:

I get weepy every time I see Billy, Ernie and Fergie together...because some day I won't.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:19pm Brian in UK:

@UM you misspelled Noy's record label!!

Yacht, a Dutch word?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:20pm Uncle Michael:

I did?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:23pm Jeff Golick:

I got it from here: www.youtube.com...
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:23pm Holly in NC:

Noy seems to be most common answer to Neu! query.
But - Einstürzende Neubauten - is the "Neu" new or noy? Web majority says "new". I am SO confused.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:23pm ndbob:

ever hear the Dave Lewis LP of Tijuana Brass covers?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:24pm Mike East:

I think that's noy, too, Holly. I also know the name Neumann in German is pronounced Noy-mon...which I know because of the movie Soul Kitchen
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:27pm Uncle Michael:

We were Noy-manns in the old country.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:27pm Alex In Illinois:

I have alway heard Neubauten pronounced "Noy-bow-ton". BY "bow", I don't mean the kind you tie. I mean the front of a boat or what you do before you exit the stage.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:30pm Brian in UK:

Catch the archive later, nice one Uncle.
Was it Edison Lighthouse?
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

Yep. See ya Brian!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:32pm Holly in NC:

@Jeff - Thank you for the Monty Python
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:32pm Uncle Michael:

Don Agrati = Don Grady = Robby Douglas on My Three Sons
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:34pm Brian in UK:

@Jeff late to comprehension. Brilliant.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:37pm Jeff Golick:

This set is bonkers in the best way possible.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:37pm Holly in NC:

@UM, the opening to 'Suddenly' (great song!) briefly (very briefly) reminded me of The Rugburns' 'Me & Eddie Vedder', and I'm thinking you might be one of the only people on this board who's heard the Rugburns song.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you Jeff...(Jeff knows bonkers)
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:40pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know that one at all, Holly. I'll have to hear that.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:41pm βrian:

Why, you've crossed the language barrier. Ça me plaît.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:43pm βrian:

Reminds me of the Bone Conduction show, years ago on WEMU.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:43pm βrian:

The bed music, I mean.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:43pm Holly in NC:

Crap - just noticed I missed the Boswell sisters while moving clothes to dryer. I kinda worship Connee Boswell.

@UM - here ya go. And as you shall see, efd would appreciate also based on the Houses of the Holy fest Wednesday night!

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Holly. I'm saving that for dessert.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:48pm Jeff Golick:

Ok, baby needs a new pair of soccer cleats/football shoes. Gotta run, but thanks as ever, Uncle Michael! Hallogallo and goodbye-allo, to one and allo.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:49pm Uncle Michael:

Buy (shoes) Jeff!
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:50pm Uncle Michael:

This is the title track to a never-released album, thanks to marvin and Berry feuding over politics.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:53pm Holly in NC:

@UM - M. Gaye is great. I'd only ever heard it on that Black & Proud comp. Also liked St. Paul, nice!

I hope you like the Rugburns. You have to be in the right mood. ;-)
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:54pm northguineahills:

Jeff, that should be 'soccer cleats/football boots' (for some reason).
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

I'll consult my mood ring. Glad you liked those.
Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 2:55pm Stevel:

Great show. Lurking as I move in and out of doors. Chilly dreary day here in the Fort, but it beats the hell out of snow.

Avatar Fri. 4/4/14 11:41pm pacific standard simon:
