Kurt should do a noise performance with nothing but the start of scratchy records
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:03pm Sem Chumbo:

At least a penny and a nickel on the tone arm, I bet.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:03pm common:

@dce: my partner always talks about doing that!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:05pm steve:

a pal of mine did a "DJ set" at an art gallery where he played and mixed nothing but runout grooves. what i heard of it was pretty nice.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:12pm Kurt Gottschalk:

g'day everyone! thanks for tuning in.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:14pm Carmichael:

Bozo the Sphinx? Hiya Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:19pm Kurt Gottschalk:

didn't ask jeff about this one but it's starting to look like david bowie to me.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:20pm northguineahills:

@steve: I did that at a gallery w/ 20 other djs (at the same time). Suppositively, it was one of Cage's 'Variations'.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:22pm steve:

whoa nice ngh. that sounds great.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:23pm common:

that's pretty great, ngh.

i see some bowie in there, kurt.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:24pm northguineahills:

I decided to name the house wren that's been singing and perched on my fire escape the last few weeks, Christopher Wren.

/I see common got the pink volvo....
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:32pm common:

@ngh: hee.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:42pm Caryn:

Hello all. Slightly Pennywise-y gif this week. But somehow less scary.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:44pm SeanG:

Is The National the most over-hyped crappy band in the universe right now?
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:46pm glenn:

nope. it's gotta be mumford and sons.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:48pm Caryn:

Oh, at least Mumford and Sons has the sense to make the occasional excellent video. The National doesn't even have that.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:50pm northguineahills:

I have an old piece of Parker/Bailey Incus vinyl laying around somewhere.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:51pm glenn:

i confess, i wouldn't know a "the national" song if it jumped up and bit me on the ass.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:52pm SeanG:

The National are so so boring!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:52pm DCE:

that's the thing, glenn. it wouldn't jump up and bite anybody. it might bore them to death, however.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:52pm SeanG:

right on DCE
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:53pm DCE:

apparently thought the guitarist is supposed to be a somewhat talented composer. I think I read a review of a new album of his of compositions played by Kronos Quartet.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:53pm common:

exactly sean, and dce. people at my work were listening to them yesterday and my coworker said almost the same thing.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:55pm SeanG:

yeah I keep hearing how great they are but when I listen it's just crapola
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:57pm Goyim in the AM:

My cat -- who is used to non-idiomatic improvisation -- just got really upset by something these two "said".
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 3:57pm Caryn:

I'm more and more convinced that the gif is of Pennywise, and thus I'm trying to avoid looking at it, since I'm expecting it to come to life any moment. Thankfully, "Galaxy Quest" is on tv, so I have a welcome distraction (along with the music, of course).
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:01pm glenn:

oh, galaxy quest. i literally never say literally, but when i saw galaxy quest i literally pissed myself i was laughing so hard.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:02pm Mike East:

@Caryn - I was watching Galaxy Quest last weekend. Also, regarding scary clowns, have you seen this? observer.com...

I believe it was revealed as a hoax, but the guy in the video at the bottom cracks me up.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:03pm fred:

@DCE: I don't know the band, but I did see Kronos perform one of these compositions. There was a pop side to it that wasn't bad in that setting, but it was nothing to write home about. I think Kronos have made much better choices when it comes to young composers
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:08pm glenn:

even better than a scary clown is a sad clown - www.youtube.com...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:10pm Honey Water:

Nice and sunny in southern Indiana, and should get to 70 on Sunday, whee.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:12pm Mike East:

seen you tweet that before, glenn. That's a good one. showed it to my wife
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:13pm Honey Water:

Scary clown indeed: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:13pm Caryn:

@Mike: reminds me of the guy doing the same thing in the UK about a year ago. There was a huge manhunt to find out who the "creepy clown guy" was.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:15pm Caryn:

@glenn: I feel like the bigger a nerd you are, the funnier you find the movie. It's funny on its own, but all the obscure and not-so-obscure genre references heighten the hilarity. Thus, as a giant geek, I laugh myself silly every time I watch.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:15pm steve:

even better than a scary clown, or a sad clown, is Tears of a Clown by the English Beat
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:15pm Mike East:

@Honey Water - I know what that is and I WILL NOT CLICK IT! :)
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:16pm glenn:

i can't deny it. i think it's a great version of the song.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:16pm Honey Water:

Aw, Mike, go on... it can't hurt you 900 miles away!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:17pm Honey Water:

Or can it? ....bwahahahaha ...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:17pm glenn:

oh lord, when they're pulling the space ship out of the dock and they keep scraping up the sides. that's gotta be the funniest thing ever put on film.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:19pm V Priceless:

we gonna get Kinks 'Black Mariah"? : )
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:20pm common:

woah, honey water! That's creepy as shit!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:20pm Mike East:

@glenn - yes, that is hilarious
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:20pm Kurt Gottschalk:

oh no! dunno that kinx song! too late now...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:21pm Caryn:

@glenn: the double act of Sam Rockwell and permanently stoned Tony Shalhoub produces the best moments to me. Although the entire "stompers" conversation is the highlight of the film.

Still, fine movie simply as a scifi movie. Good soaring music, excellent sfx, the Rick Baker creatures...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:22pm glenn:

galaxy quest is also further proof that alan rickman can do no wrong.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:23pm Honey Water:

@common: It's an animated antique clown from around WWI (courtesy of my grandmother while a nurse in France), and Philo Gristle's stop motion.

Hi, Kurt! Was listening early on, but was outside on the deck sans keyboard.

@honey water: pretty great...but scary. so is that other clown, mike east!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:25pm Honey Water:

Love this.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:26pm V Priceless:

colin moulding! we were just wondering about him the other day!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:26pm SeanG:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:27pm Caryn:

@glenn: The utter despair and disgust in Alan Rickman's demeanor as he goes, "By Grabthar's hammer... what a savings" is pure comedy gold.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:27pm V Priceless:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:27pm ranjit:

I didn't listen to you. I went outside, because I wanted a soda. It didn't rain! I didn't get wet! What's that you're working on? Can I see it? Oops.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:28pm Cheri Pi:

Extended version is my fave!!!!!!! Heya Kurt
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:29pm common:

hell yea! ghost town!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:30pm PKNY:

Got to see the Specials over the summer, another item crossed off the bucket list.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:30pm steve:

i concur. heck yeah Ghost Town
  Fri. 3/28/14 4:32pm paula pc:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:33pm Honey Water:

Across the board and all ovah the woild.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:34pm Caryn:

Ah, anytime The Specials is on, the day becomes way better.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:37pm fred:

First time I heard this extended version. Loved it. And I don't like the Specials that much
  Fri. 3/28/14 4:38pm paula pc:

you hit it on the head with Roseland
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:39pm Davis:

chart band too- it was an event whenever ghost town was on top of the pops in thatchers britain
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:41pm Honey Water:

A search just now shows no one has played "Waters of March" since March 2002? That can't be right. Maybe I'll try Duck Duck.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:42pm Honey Water:

On WFMU, I should add.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:43pm Carmichael:

Alan Rickman to Tim Allen: "I see you've managed to get your shirt ripped off you again ..."
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:44pm F.C.C.:

We can see you giving us the bird. Mr Gottschalk. Please stop.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:44pm Mike East:

@HW - definitely not true...I heard it a couple weeks ago...if I could just remember what show...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:45pm northguineahills:

and Prince's ejaculate over the white sheet...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:45pm Honey Water:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:48pm Webhamster Henry:

Do you know that Suzanne Vega's "Tom's Diner" was a major test case when developing the MP3 compression algorithm?
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:48pm Honey Water:

@Mike: Well, I recall Matt 5-ash saying he *should* have played it, but didn't. Is that what you're recalling?
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:48pm Droll:

If you subtract the original signal from a MP3 to get only the difference, and encode that as an MP3 which lost that self-same difference, what are you hearing?
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:49pm Honey Water:

@Carmichael: Reprising an older exchange from D/O: kat330 wants you to know that while "Gristle" is indeed a fine, almost onomatopoeic surname, Philo preferred the alliterative thrust of 330.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:50pm ranjit:

I keep hearing bits of the Harry Potter theme in these Tatar folk themes.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:50pm fred:

@Webhamster Henry: It's still a mainstay of demos at audio shows, for what it's worth (not much, I'll guess)
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:54pm Honey Water:

Time to move it move it move it! :)
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:54pm Mike East:

@Honey Water - found it...Hinky Dinky Time: wfmu.org...

Sergio Mendes version
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:54pm fred:

@henry: four years old, but I worked on that, and I can tell you that track is still in use: www.youtube.com...
There are technical reasons for it, I've been told. Like it plays to algorithms' strengths
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:54pm ranjit:

"The Unpronounceable Beat of Sarajevo" is one of the best album titles ever!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:55pm slugluv1313:

ah! shades of Happy Bernie's Polka Hour! :)
  Fri. 3/28/14 4:55pm NFL:

Okay, pony up $12 each, which we will then waste on luxury suites and dubious real estate deals which we will then write off on our taxes. You're welcome.

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 4:59pm Honey Water:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:01pm northguineahills:

The secret is getting the sauce just right and just the right amount of sauce.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:02pm Honey Water:

In my case -- not speaking for anyone else -- it's a processed, cheap way to have a lunch. I always add turmeric, green onions and parsley, to pretend I'm having a healthier meal.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:02pm Webhamster Henry:

If you like d that Ryan Maguire piece and research, you'll be interested in Kyle McDonald's Only Everything Lasts Forever kylemcdonald.net...
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:05pm northguineahills:

yakisoba is just fried soba noodles. I usually add veggies like baby bok choi, etc, and create a sauce from scratch. There are instant versions, or you can just get raw soba noodles and do it yourself. (just realized I only have spanish onions and jalapenos for my veggie choices, whoops).
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:06pm northguineahills:

Hmmm.., turmeric, haven't tried that before. I think I just might!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:07pm northguineahills:

(in my yakisoba)
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:07pm Honey Water:

So how did the instant version get to co-opt the name "Yakisoba"? Oh... I guess the same way they co-opted ramen.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:08pm fred:

Don't get me started on MP3, Henry. Fraunhofer were evil on that one, but eye-opening too. HTML5 lost years because of the precedent, though it looks like Apple might still win
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:09pm Honey Water:

Turmeric: The poor person's saffron substitute.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:09pm Caryn:

Hmm, soba noodles... another food I'd like to be able to try one day. I suspect I'd prefer to go nontraditional and eat them warm, not cold.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:10pm northguineahills:

You can eat soba warm or cold.

Yakisoba was usually cafe/street fast food when I was in Japan, eons ago.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:11pm fred:

I absolutely loved the soba noodles I had at a Japanese coworker's. I could never find the same taste again, and I've tried many brands (I'm partial to buckwheat, so yakisoba doesn't cut it for me)
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:13pm northguineahills:

find a few recipes for the sauce online, and experiment w/ the ingredients amount per ingredients. (actually, that's how I make my forays into most cuisines).
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:14pm Honey Water:

Nice cover here.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:15pm fred:

Musique Action looks like a great festival. I've never been there, but we get some of the acts over here before or after, and it's consistently good
  Fri. 3/28/14 5:16pm P-90:

@Caryn: Soba is basically a buckwheat version of the white udon noodles you see in a bowl of ramen, and that's how it's most often served, in a hot bowl of ramen
  Fri. 3/28/14 5:17pm Brendan:

Takin it easy on the keys. Nice and easy.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:18pm Honey Water:

Could be a hymn.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:19pm northguineahills:

ok, nom nom time! If I don't type again, have a great weekend everyone, and thanks for an awesome show Kurt!
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:21pm Honey Water:

You, too. Plan to blow it out with kat330 on Sunday.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:22pm northguineahills:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:23pm Caryn:

@P-90: I'm well aware. They just don't sell buckwheat noodles here (well, maybe they do in the capital, but not here in the sticks), so no soba.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:30pm Ike:

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:30pm Carmichael:

Caryn, soba would be perfect for your climate. nothing like a steaming bowl of noodles, veggies and broth on an icy day.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:32pm Caryn:

@Carm: true, which is one reason I'd love to try them. I guess I'll have to settle for basic Top Ramen for now.
  Fri. 3/28/14 5:35pm P-90:

@Caryn: If you generally like whole-grain breads and pastas, you'll probably like soba, it has the same kind of dense, nutty flavor.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:37pm steve:

mmm. buckwheat pasta is the best.

Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:57pm Carmichael:

Doesn't seem right that such mellow music back there was performed by a guy named Butch. Linguistic mutual exclusivity.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 5:57pm Caryn:

It's been a lovely show, Kurt! Already looking forward to next week. Bye, all! I'm off to do some knitting.
Avatar Fri. 3/28/14 10:19pm V Priceless:
