Re-caught part of the Soul Train history doc the other day. It talks about the old Afro-Sheen ads, which seem pretty entertainingly terrible, but didn't seem to run in markets I was in back in the day. Some are street scenes, etc., but the one with Frederick Douglass showing up in a teen's bedroom and admonishing him to take more pride in his hair might be the blue ribbon entry.

Thanks for looking, Joe! I have found Mr. Pike to be rather elusive.

@ Jeff -- Ah, it's coming back to me now. I remember seeing the dirty snowmen in household Peanut galleries of my childhood. Call the Jesuits back to the station-house.
Avatar    Fri. 3/21/14 11:17am Van in DC:

You. Were. Right. Doug.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 11:18am earrie:

Ah, I go in the fresh chives/scallions taste directions. I'll have to give the kombu a shot. I met it as 'Laminaria' studying tidal wrack communities.

Pat, in other words, he's still dead?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael's 3-hour paean to spring, his audio love-letter to Mother Nature, begins in 40 minutes. He will be doing his show from the roof of this ranch-style bungalow, sitting in a lotus position in humble deference to the sky.

His playlist page is here: wfmu.org...
Avatar    Fri. 3/21/14 11:20am Carmichael:

Oh Doug, Bas said you instantly recognized and ID'ed his mystery song. He was in awe.
Avatar    Fri. 3/21/14 11:20am Uncle Michael:

All of that is perfectly true.
Avatar    Fri. 3/21/14 11:21am Parq:

Doug, the effect will be only slightly marred by the fact that he will be eating a bag of Chee-tos.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 11:21am still b/p:

The bunga bunga bungalow parties are not to be missed. Foreign VIPs and everything.
Avatar    Fri. 3/21/14 11:21am Uncle Michael:

So I'm going to get more authentic soup if I use kombu and bonito flakes?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

Voodoo Funk's Frank Gossner (who one summer did a 1-hour show on WFMU) is the man behind that Christie Azuman reissue. Great stuff.

@Carmichael
Yes! Bas emailed me and was able to help!

@Parq
But they are the new all-natural Chee-tos.

So, about KaTe, one last time. 34 years ago:

"Not that I mind losing money on a tour--there are so many benefits from it--as long as we don't go bankrupt. We do want to tour again, we will tour again, because there are so many things we still want to do on stage, but we'll have to think about it very carefully because it will stop me doing a lot of other things."

I'd say Topshelf Oldies - not freeform since it's 50s and 60s oldies - but tremendous variety within that framework

Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 11:52am joe:

Tony Pike-Seems he owned a studio on Dryburgh Road in Putney England in which he did most of the producing. All evidence of most of this out put seems to be in the small run/private pressing stock. Again all mention I can find seems to end sometime in the early 70's so I would venture a guess that he stepped away from the music biz at that point or may have how should we say "moved on". I see he worked with bands such as THE SONS OF ZEBEDEE,The Shades of Blue, The Maniax and then what ever out put was released on Tepee records. Based on current Google Maps images I'm going to say that unless there has been some major overhaul to the neighborhood it was a home based studio.
