Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I don't think Freddie would enjoy that.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:05pm Alex In Illinois:

I don't remember Jimmy looking so young. But that is because I was younger than Jimmy when I last watched the show.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:05pm Doug Schulkind:

Hey Uncle Michael, how far can you see from up there?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:05pm still b/p:

Right, it's not for puffin' stuff.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:05pm Uncle Michael:

All the way to the lazy river.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:06pm Jeff Golick:

I modeled my 'do on Mr. Stuff's.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:06pm listener james from westwood:

As long as you don't model your 'do on Witchiepoo.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:07pm still b/p:

Seems to be a lot yelling for a river described as Lazy.

I don't get it. How is this Kansas song about "spring"??
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:10pm still b/p:

I think I was a little jealous of Jack Wild's showbiz teen-mag life. I dd not know, however, that he was an alcoholic by 21, had a rough adulthood and is now dead.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:10pm Uncle Michael:

This is my homage to Dave Hill right now.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:10pm βrian:

Oh my, Joe McG pulled one of these out of the hat yesterday.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:11pm pacific standard simon:

You weren't kidding yesterday about playing Kansas to Amon Duul fans, UM. Or was it the other way around?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:11pm Goyim in the AM:

I for one welcome the WFMU Kansas revival. Hi, y'all.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:11pm Uncle Michael:

What did Joe play?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:12pm Goyim in the AM:

Point of No Return.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:12pm Andrew Waterloo:

The point of No Return?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:12pm Uncle Michael:

Awesome.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:13pm Andrew Waterloo:

Now I know it's a kansas song
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:13pm Goyim in the AM:

It's nice to hear this in full digital hi-fi, and not just coming in to my heater vents from my older brother's room along with the dreadful smell of his cheap homegrown.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:15pm Doug Schulkind:

If I don't hear some Bachman Turner Overdrive pronto, I am going to have a tantrum.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:16pm βrian:

Joe played "Point of No Return."
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:16pm Uncle Michael:

You know...all these people can see you, Doug. Do you want that?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:16pm Andrew Waterloo:

Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:19pm Lewis:

"I wanna see some dissipation in my … face…"
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:20pm Jeff Golick:

...and I've been to services headed by Andy Bachman. Yes, he does bound up to the pulpit to the strains of "Taking Care of Business."
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:23pm Gary:

Oh, wait -- this is the "Alone Again," guy ... I thought I recognized the voice.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:24pm pacific standard simon:

Alone again... naturally, thanks to garlic supplements!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Rabbi Bachman is more a Superchunk and Hank Williams fan.

Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

heh. knew it.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:37pm Jeff Golick:

@UM: I strongly disagree with that AP decision. They might say that I'm over upset.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:38pm efd:

... but actually headed out to an extended lunch, so sadly I will miss a good portion of the show in real-time.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

have a good lunch, Evan!

I hope today's Random Spin doesn't get me in trouble with the man.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:39pm Alex In Illinois:

Uncle Michael mentioned Don Kirshner. Anyone remember Don Kirshner's Rock Concert? Then on some SNL episodes, Paul Shaffer would portray Don Kirshner.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:39pm Jeff Golick:

STANDARDS! RULES! THE OLD WAYZ! SPITTLE! IN MY DAY! KIDS! THIS BALL IS MINE! LAWN YAWN ZZZZ!

etc.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

Fo' sho', Alex.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:40pm Jeff Golick:

Oh my, "Clambake." Tom Hanks' version of this on an early Letterman show is oft cited in our home.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:40pm listener james from westwood:

I'm with Jeff. I wish I'd been in that session, but I don't use AP style for any work. It's said there were gasps in the audience. It ignited a shitstorm on Twitter (search #ACES2014 for its fallout). But fundamentally, it's just a rule. It can be bent, broken, or ignored as long as you're consistent.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:41pm βrian:

A Kansas clambake? I dunno....
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:41pm northguineahills:

what, no fish fry. and where's my shortning?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:45pm northguineahills:

I need some sugaree....
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:50pm βrian:

Time to start those tomato seedlings.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:51pm northguineahills:

those aren't clams Brian, they're lamb fries....
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:53pm Mike East:

Tumbleweed Connection now on my list of records to look for. Thanks.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:54pm listener james from westwood:

Lovely Elton track, that.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:55pm Uncle Michael:

I think it's a great, under-appreciated album. I'm a pre-Yellow Brick Road guy.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:57pm Mike East:

the only pre YBR I have is Honky Chateau, which I dig
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:57pm Mike East:

though that was tends to be quite appreciated
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:58pm Uncle Michael:

I like all those earlier albums.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 12:59pm Uncle Michael:

I have NO idea what just caused that dropout. Yikes. I hope it doesn't reoccur.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:00pm βrian:

I thought I had a lapse at the synapse.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:01pm listener james from westwood:

Doesn't deter from the fact that this first hour was great with a capital REAT.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:02pm βrian:

Swallows fly and swallow flies, some of whom are swallowing.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:02pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, James.

This is a long'un. H,H&F are distinguished by having Albert Lee on guitar. He sounds the least like we expect him to sound in this band...and particularly on a track like this ballad.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

I like this in spite of the sax solo.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:16pm Goyim in the AM:

More non-ironic hiphop covers by very competent bands, please.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:16pm Uncle Michael:

Isn't this great?
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:17pm Mike East:

yes, this IS great
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:17pm Goyim in the AM:

It's fantastic.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

I like the rocksteady thing going on in the Betty Wright track.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:21pm northguineahills:

found the dj screw version of the original I Gotsa Get Paid.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:22pm ndbob:

Ly-dells! Great one UM
  Fri. 3/21/14 1:22pm Santos L Halper:

I like the mix of this with the blips and bloops Bryce is playing. Hope nothing goes haywire if the streams cross...
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:23pm Mike East:

NEVER CROSS THE STREAMS!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

You know what they say in the men's room.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:24pm Mike East:

...unless you WANT the universe to collapse in on itself.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:24pm Uncle Michael:

yes, that.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:24pm Mike East:

sorry, I've been watching Ghostbusters recently
  Fri. 3/21/14 1:26pm Santos L Halper:

I take full responsibility for any time/dimensional continuum issues.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:26pm listener james from westwood:

New Pornographers! Fine cut.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:27pm Uncle Michael:

Just butting shit up to other shit to see what shit works!
  Fri. 3/21/14 1:29pm Santos L Halper:

Speaking of movies, many of you would probably dig Mr. Nobody; some great dimensional fracturing there. Jared Leto is great in it.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:32pm listener james from westwood:

It is the shit, and in that good-shit way.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:34pm northguineahills:

I don't think I've heard Bryce in 6 weeks. Gonna see what he's up to. Groovy jams, UM!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:35pm Mike East:

I'll checkitout Santos. thanks.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:37pm Gary:

Hearing those cars in the Legrand, I want to know when we're gonna get a three-hour "odd, non-music sounds added-in" marathon :)
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:39pm Uncle Michael:

Well...I have something *similar* planned for a show soon, Gary...maybe my anniversary show.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:39pm Gary:

Yay!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:46pm SeanG:

NICE
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

I believe this is the earliest take.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:47pm pacific standard simon:

The Stooges, just in time for me to say farewell until next week. That's cutting it close, Michael.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:47pm SeanG:

supposedly T.V in this song stands for twat vibe
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:47pm Stevel:

UM: Thank you for pre-answering my nerd question.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

See ya, Simon!

TWAT VIBE!!!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:49pm pacific standard simon:

That's what the Ashton's sister claims.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:52pm listener james from westwood:

Back in the 50s, the song would have been called "Personal Massager Eye."
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:58pm βrian:

Wow. I was startled that I recognized that soundtrack.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 1:59pm Jeff Golick:

...Doug S filling in for Jeffs this Monday -- Destination: Pittsburgh!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:03pm Whooda:

Soul on a stick DJ Uncle Michael. Thanks for introducing me to James Fry.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:05pm Uncle Michael:

My pleasure!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

How's the audio sounding today?
  Fri. 3/21/14 2:10pm VAC:

Bitchin baby!
  Fri. 3/21/14 2:10pm βrian:

Scott Walker should change his name.
  Fri. 3/21/14 2:11pm βrian:

Retroactively, too.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:11pm Uncle Michael:

He isn't playing Wisconsin any time soon.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:12pm Gary:

Sound is good here
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks folks.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:14pm Whooda:

There are two songs that make me cry, one of them is Sting's cover of 'Come Down In Time'.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:14pm Jeff Golick:

Sounding strong, UM!

Man, I got a song I can't wait for you to hear...in a week from Monday.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

Yay! Me too!

I haven't heard that, Whooda.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:15pm Gary:

That said, I did mis-hear "cannonball" as "telephone"
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:16pm Uncle Michael:

This band has to be a blast, live.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:17pm Gary:

STILL sounds like "telephone," despite staring at the song title.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:17pm Whooda:

'Two Rooms' a tribute album to EJ and Taupin. It slso has the other song that makes me cry, Sined O'Conner's treatment of 'Sacrifice'.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:19pm Uncle Michael:

I'll check it out.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:24pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:28pm listener james from westwood:

Go, baby, go!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

nothing left to remove, I'm afraid

Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

Good luck, James. Hold the line!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:49pm Alex In Illinois:

Sid Krofft must have some great weed. Whenever I did bongs, I never got to see talking flutes and dragons holding Mayoral positions, and talking doors named "Lester" friendly trees etc.
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:49pm Denise in DC:

Are you here every Friday, Unk? Will have to listen in future!
Avatar Fri. 3/21/14 2:50pm Uncle Michael:
