Glenn and Doca! Lemme think on that, Glenn ... but probably their gut instincts would be best.

Excellent start, these are the gems!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:09pm Gary:

Thanks, JK!
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:09pm conrad:

Had to switch over from the broadcast. Am very glad for this show. Hate to say it, but Andrea's show is so...so...NPR. Like if "This American Life' was by/about one person.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:10pm Gary:

Welcome, Conrad! Pull up an ottoman!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:12pm davex:

I wonder how some of these singers are unknown. Was the music found on an unlabeled cassette?
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:13pm Gary:

Good question, Dave. It could be that they weren't able to find someone to read whatever language it was in. Or that they recorded it from a source they didn't bring back with them. It would be great to go through each album with each of the compilers/editors (named in the playlist, btw)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:14pm ndbob:

ah this is form one of the best SF CD's
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:15pm cklequ:

I'm late to the party. Is this a Sublime Frequencies special?
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:16pm davex:

It would really be a shame if they just didn't have someone to read the languages, which shouldn't be too hard (and some scripts are not that hard to figure out with a little practice). In any case, I'm intrigued...
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:16pm Gary:

Yes, cklequ, it is indeed -- come on in!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:18pm doca:

Me and some friends of mine are planning to do a series of screenings of Sublime Frequencies' movies. Hope people like it
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:18pm jk:

Is there another version of this some floating around somewhere?
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:19pm Gary:

Where are you screening them, Doca?
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:19pm jk:

The jermain tamraz song I mean
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:19pm cklequ:

Nice... so much from this catalogue i haven't heard yet. Just bought the Choubi Choubi! volume 2 LPs but haven't had a chance to sit down with it yet.

Not sure, JK, but it does sound familiar

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:27pm Rich in Washington:

The Sublime Freq. docs are amazing! So hypnotic! I've only seen about half a dozen of them and every one has been really incredible.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:28pm cklequ:

Any chance Blondie In Khmer Camouflage from Radio Phnom Penh might be popping up tonight? That's the one that sucked me in.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:29pm Gary:

Rich! Michael! Yeah, I gotta see them. I haven't yet, but so, so wanting a week or two off to just soak them all in.
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:29pm Doug Schulkind:

Too many favorites to name. I adore all the recordings off the radio in the far-flung locales. What a great way to experience another place. (Of course, I never travel without a radio.)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:30pm Gary:

Doug! Awesome HOWL show last night
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:31pm Rich in Washington:

Me too, Doug! I especially dig the radio releases. My introduction to the whole series was Radio Palestine.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:32pm Rich in Washington:

Gergis' other project Porest is pretty fun, too.
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:32pm jk:

Second for blondie in Khmer camo, I love that song!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:33pm Gary:

You may be in luck tonight, JK
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:33pm Gary:

At the time I discovered SF I was heavily into Arabic music, so it was a revelation to hear this stuff from Sumatra
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:35pm Doug Schulkind:

And I love that crazy insects release. I've used it as a music bed!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:36pm Gary:

  Wed. 3/26/14 7:36pm Mark:

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:38pm Rich in Washington:

The Brokenhearted Dragonflies album is the lone standout nature field recording album, as far as I know. I've used it too.
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:39pm JuanG:

Not 'Pride of the Nation', but 'Don't ask my name' by Ri Kyong Suk http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_Ask_My_Name
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:39pm listener james from westwood:

Was hoping we'd hear a bit from NK! (reminder: must have my hair cut like Kim Jong-un's.)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:39pm Gary:

NGH! Yes, it's incredible ... and slightly odd
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:39pm Rich in Washington:

The Ghosts of Isan DVD is really, really amazing. I really dig the Isan/Thai rock thing.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:41pm Gary:

I feel like Anthology Film Archives ought to show a night or two of SF / Gergis films
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:41pm ndbob:

wow that Isan track was great!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:42pm Holly in NC:

Hi Gary! Hi everyone!
I can't do listening justice to these sublime frequencies at the moment, will have to curl up later with archives, headphones, and an adult beverage.
Off to monitor young 'uns viewing of Minecraft videos, sigh. Luckily said young 'uns only get 30 minutes of media time.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:42pm Rich in Washington:

Oh! I don't have Radio Algeria. What's wrong with me? This sounds incredible!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:43pm Rich in Washington:

@nbob: Isan music is really amazing. Esp, the delay'd guitar-like stuff (played on an instrument called a pin). Really trippy.
  Wed. 3/26/14 7:43pm conrad:

I thought that there was no music allowed in Algeria? Which why all the rai guys moved to Paris.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:44pm Gary:

Rich, it's a MUST HAVE

excellent first hour Gary - need to go - will catch the rest on the archive
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:57pm Gary:

Have a great night, Bob! Oh, sorry, Doca -- I misread!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 7:59pm doca:

You misread the message between the lines eheh: we're showing an illegal download of the Sublime Frequencies' movies. We should all get together here and buy them to support the label
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:00pm Gary:

Oh I didn't misread that part :)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:00pm doca:

Looking back, Sublime Frequencies seems like the only possible outlet for Sun City Girls' activities. I mean, they've made so much thing that they couldn't be a band anymore, just a label.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:00pm Gary:

Michael: It's the Minions again!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:02pm Gary:

Doca, I honestly think of Sublime Frequencies as a band. My favorite band of the Aughts.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:03pm doca:

@Gary: that part was very explicit eheh I've read a nice interview on The Quietus with Mark Gergis about the "I remember Syria" comp and a lot of things SF-related, I'm posting it here

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:04pm Gary:

Yes! That's a great interview, thanks Doca!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:04pm doca:

Yeah, I guess it's the same. I mean only that SF is like the other side to Sun City Girls, like its counterpart

This is an amazing show tonight. I had big plans to cook soup and almost forgot to tune in at all. Instead i'm stuck with a set of headphones, cutting circles in fancy paper. Soup is a distant memory .

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:25pm davex:

I stand by my statement before that this is a fantastic show. I suppose it is a label that keeps on giving, but excellent selections and global orbiting speed, Gary.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:29pm Holly in NC:

Speaking of soup ... @Jill - thank you for cioppino recipe (via Gary)!
Here's a trick I use to make any seafood soup 10x better - every once in a while steam some mussels in some sory of winey, garlicky bath - and - temporary restraint is called for here - strain out the mussels, shell, chill and eat them w salad for lunch or a snack. Meanwhile reduce the brothy goodness as far as you're willing to take it, and freeze. Use these power packs wisely. You probably already hoard your shrimp shells...
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:31pm listener james from westwood:

Sounding fab at the halfway mark!

The label was started by Alan and Richard Bishop and Hisham Mayet in 2003. It seemed you were confused about the early history....Since 2004 it has been run by Alan and Hisham with a clutch of contributors...

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:48pm Gary:

Yeah, I was wondering that, too, Doca!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:49pm doca:

It is! And there's a not-so-nice review here (concerning the thing with translations and liner notes which someone asked before):

Gibson has a great piece about Singaporean state and society in Wired magazine too...
  Wed. 3/26/14 8:56pm JuanG:

NO, this is not the same Gibson who wrote Neuromancer
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:58pm doca:

It isn't? I thought it fitted, as he wrote about Singapore before
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 8:59pm hyde:

y'know, I feel like I already own a lot of the Sublime Frequencies output, but for some reason I suddenly feel like I need more
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:01pm Gary:

I feel the same way, Hyde. I think I have about 40-45 titles? Of I think 80-something

  Wed. 3/26/14 9:03pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:03pm hyde:

unsurprisingly you've got me beat Gary, but between me + the s.o. we must be at over thirty. clearly not enough.
  Wed. 3/26/14 9:03pm JuanG:

doca: the William Gibson in question here, I believe, is this guy: http://id.linkedin.com/in/williamgibson2 He wrote a piece called Record Hunting in Jakarta published on the issue 64 of Signal To Noise magazine
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:04pm Gary:

Luna! Wake up! You're going to miss the Dara Puspita track and will never forgive yourself!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:08pm doca:

@JuanG: That seems more likely! Specially because William Gibson hated Singapore on that piece I've mentioned
  Wed. 3/26/14 9:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:21pm Uncle Michael:

I don't know anything about the music I hear on this show but I don't care. My ears like it.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:22pm Gary:

Yep, I felt weird when I first bought this CD ...
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:22pm Gary:

It's illegal to play it in Brazil, I seem to recall reading in the liner notes
  Wed. 3/26/14 9:26pm doca:

actually it isn't, as the border with usual funk is very thin. but it was discouraged in radio because it defended drug traffic organizations. most of this music still sells on the street, on pirate compilations, so the radio is no big issue
  Wed. 3/26/14 9:28pm doca:

comando vermelho came back to notice with the recent crisis on brazilian prisons in the state of maranhão. if anyone has stomach and is willing to know more about it, it is worth reading to understand brazil
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:28pm Gary:

Ah, got it. We should be arrested for keeping you up, though :)
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:30pm pacific standard simon:

Not knowing anything about the music you hear on the radio is a feature, not a bug.
  Wed. 3/26/14 9:30pm doca:

that's time on parole, gary. i guess i'm gonna stay up until the show is over
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:31pm Gary:

Simon!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:31pm pacific standard simon:

@Gary - That Frank O'Hara poem is one of my favorites!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:32pm Gary:

He's hands down my favorite poet, I think of any era.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:34pm pacific standard simon:

I'm inclined to agree. There are other poets that knock me out, but O'Hara was by far the friendliest to the reader.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:34pm northguineahills:

when I went to dj in Monterrey Mexico, 7 years back, the Mexican dj before me was playing nothing but baile funk. Luckily, me and my dj partner had enough baile funk to transition the dancing crowd to whatever we were playing later.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:38pm pacific standard simon:

Also Thom Gunn.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:39pm northguineahills:

I'm inclined to concur w/ pss's opinion.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:41pm hyde:

oh man, i *love* phuong dung. i have a huge asian pop playlist that i throw on random all the time, and she always stands out when she comes on.
  Wed. 3/26/14 9:42pm doca:

i've read wislawa szymborska recently and liked a lot. her oetry the same feel of exceptional day to day events and things than o'hara. just as a suggestion...
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:44pm pacific standard simon:

Any idea who's playing guitar on this Phương Dung track? It rubs my love of The Magic Band the right way.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:46pm Gary:

No idea, Simon. Might be in the liner notes of the album, but it's an LP only at this point and I don't have it :(
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:47pm pacific standard simon:

Will look into it, @doca.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:50pm pacific standard simon:

Probably just a footnote, anyway, Gary. I know you're lucky with these things if you have anything more than a group picture.
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:52pm Gary:

Here's one interview with Hisham Mayet, another to follow: www.portlandmercury.com...

Forget sublime frequently. Try sublime constantly!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:53pm northguineahills:

I'm busy washing dishes, so I'd thought I'd say souper fractals of beautiful vibrations, Gary!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:54pm Gary:

I had one other set after this, but I just don't think I should do it -- it's a 9 minute track, which will mean it won't be captured in the archives ...
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:55pm pacific standard simon:

I'm being called to dinner, so I'll just say thanks, Gary, for presenting all this wonderful stuff on GTDR and WFMU!
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:55pm Gary:

That was Amitabh Bachhan speaking, biggest superstar in the world
Avatar Wed. 3/26/14 9:56pm Gary:

  Wed. 3/26/14 9:56pm jk:
