just got in from a 4 hour drive from portland!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:13pm davex:

It was pasta with a nice veggie-tomato sauce. Simple enough for kids to eat, but delicious.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:14pm Gary:

You're 4 hours from Portland, Carol? Somehow I pictured you much closer than that!
  Wed. 3/19/14 7:14pm Jill B.:

Nothing very special for dinner tonight....leftover spaghetti made with fresh tomatoes, basil, lots of garlic and onions, great quality ground beef (of course!) a generous splash of olive oil and hearty red wine! We're adding some fresh mushrooms that have been sauteed in olive oil and some olives.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:14pm northguineahills:

I made yakisoba earlier w/ scallions, jalapenos, and egg. (and my secret sauce).

Still full from lunch from my kickass local butcher shop : Garlic Ramen w. Pork Jowl, Soft Cooked Egg, Maitake Mushrooms, Garlic Chips and Black Garlic Oil. I'll be paying for eating the noodles later, but so worth it!

Dinner will likely be eggs or sardines or clam chowder.
  Wed. 3/19/14 7:16pm Jill B.:

NGH your yakisoba sounds wonderful!
  Wed. 3/19/14 7:17pm Jill B.:

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:22pm Holly in NC:

Hi Carol! No boo, people who boo other folks' food choices suck.
If I were currently closer to our local Church's chicken emporium I would be sorely tempted.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:23pm Gary:

Just scrolling up to read y'all's dinners now ... jeez, Holly, that sounds insane-great!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:24pm Uncle Michael:

I can boil a couple bundles of soba and they last a few days in the fridge...I just cut up some fresh cuke, scallions...carrots...whatever...toss it with the sauce for a quick cold snack. It all started when I found sesame paste that wasn't tahini.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:24pm Uncle Michael:

Are these the Minions?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:25pm northguineahills:

For years, the only chicken emporium w/in walking distance was Crown Fried Chicken (ghetto KFC, and greasier). Luckily, a restaurant/bar just open up around the block that does non-greasy fried chicken and awesome biscuits. Best I've had since I've left the homeland.
  Wed. 3/19/14 7:25pm Jill B.:

For the Punk is too funny!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:25pm Gary:

LOL ... I have no idea who these krazy rap kidz are, UM
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:26pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - It was. Also purchased beef tallow. Since I'm already overcarbed I'm thinking about making real french fries - as in 1970s McD's style, before they switched to nasty veg oils.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:27pm Gary:

I totally stumbled onto that song, Mom, doing a search for "Burma" + "punk"

Burma/Myanmar has actually relaxed its policies quite a bit recently, and this singer (Mar Mar Aye) has been able to return from exile.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:33pm Gary:

How did they come up with the name Burma Shave, anyway?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:33pm carol:

@northguineahills - im totally familiar with Crown Fried Chicken. i lived in both Brooklyn and Queens and there was one somewhere near where i got off the subway. and yes - super greasy -(er than KFC)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:34pm Gary:

Yes, Dave -- I saw a video of her performing while she was there ... I think last year?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:34pm Uncle Michael:

Burma-Shave was introduced in 1925 by the Burma-Vita company owned by Clinton Odell. The company's original product was a liniment made of ingredients described as having come "from the Malay Peninsula and Burma."[1] Demand was sparse, and the company sought to expand sales by introducing a product with wider appeal.

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:38pm glenn:

if you have a wok, you can deep fry.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:40pm Uncle Michael:

I'm DJ cool...but I dunno if I'm Trader Joe's DJ cool.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:40pm northguineahills:

I need a new wok. The crappy Ikea one I have rusted quickly. I mainly use it now for dumplings.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:41pm Uncle Michael:

I don't have one because I don't have a burner hot enough for a wok. I have a Joyce Chen pseudo-wok.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:42pm northguineahills:

(believe me, I make a mess boiling water for my mate. chaos follows me everywhere, but good results follow w/in its wake.)

the best woks are the cheap carbon steel ones that you can buy for 10$ in chinatown.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:45pm glenn:

at least, they're 10$ in toronto's chinatown. they're probably 3$ in n.y.c. chinatown.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 7:45pm Gary:

Oh, it looks like dinner is being prepped here now ... I think we're having chili of some kind ...

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 8:05pm davex:

The trema (or umlaut) makes it Chan-goo-ee instead of Chan-gee.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 8:07pm davex:

And now the wiki-explanation: Changüí is a style of Cuban music which originated in the early 19th century in the eastern region of Guantánamo Province, specifically Baracoa. It arose in the sugar cane refineries and in the rural communities populated by slaves. Changui combines the structure and elements of Spain's canción and the Spanish guitar with African rhythms and percussion instruments of Bantu origin. Changui is considered a predecessor of son montuno (the ancestor of modern salsa), which has enjoyed tremendous popularity in Cuba throughout the 20th century.

@Holly - use thighs; season with salt pepper paprika (and I use turmeric, too, cuz why the hell not). brown the chicken, remove from pot, add butter a whole bunch of sliced onions, and some garlic if you want, season, saute until translucent, add the chicken back in, add stock, simmer for about an hour. remove the chicken, thicken the gravy with corn starch if necessary and whisk in sour creme to taste. serve over egg noodles. delicious.

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:06pm Mike East:

oh man, never had fresh! I gotta find that. I was just thinking this morning how happy I am that things like thyme and bay leaves are much easier to find fresh than they used to be. BTW- add thyme and bay leaves to the paprikash...I forgot that.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:08pm Holly in NC:

Must get in car & go home, cats (and leaky roof buckets) are waiting, have a great rest of show. And thank you, Gary!!! xo

@Mike - thyme, bay leaves, check. A neighbor got a bay leaf wreath for Christmas & let all of us come over and pick leaves, flavor difference is astonishing.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:08pm Mike East:

So much better than dried, for sure. later, Holly
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:11pm Gary:

Have a great night, Holly!

Ever bombastic...

Good night Holly. Happy cooking!

Only a minute left to go of this ... can't take much more
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:18pm davex:

So I guess no punk recordings from North Korea?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:18pm Gary:

I didn't even try to Google it, Dave :)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:22pm davex:

Just wondering: Couldn't you go over the three-hour slot, assuming that you wanted to?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:23pm Gary:

@Dave ... maximumrocknroll.com...
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:24pm Gary:

@Dave, I suppose I could, but at a certain point the archive recording would be cut off, I think?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:24pm Uncle Michael:

@davex; We can go over if no one follows us but it's not preserved for the archive....at 8 minutes after.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:26pm davex:

@Gary: That is funny - reminds me of this: dangerousminds.net...

@UM: Thanks, that explains it. I suppose that would be a shame for later listeners.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:28pm Gary:

I do have a couple of very dear friends who are only able to listen to the archives, yeah
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

I usually exploit that eight minutes pretty hard. I've had to rush the last mic break a few times.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:30pm Gary:

@Dave ... LOL, great article -- thanks for that!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:32pm Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael is exactly right. The archive recording machine cuts off at 8 minutes after the hour. You could OF COURSE go an extra hour or two OFF THE GRID. I don't think any of your assembled droolers would complain.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:32pm davex:

@Gary: Yeah, people were debating that hoax for a while, but it was actually quite far-fetched for any number of reasons.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:33pm Gary:

@Doug, my other boss would, though, when I wandered in to work hours late with dark circles under my eyes
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:33pm Uncle Michael:

I have wondered if that "East German Olympic" music is connected with the "Soviet Space Program" music.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

Wait...that's "East German" too!

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:36pm Uncle Michael:

(some people believe both albums are rather brilliant hoaxes)
  Wed. 3/19/14 9:39pm Jill B.:

I LOVE this one!
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:39pm Gary:

One of my all-time favorite poets was a hoax (link to come)
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:40pm Gary:

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:41pm davex:

That East German link is not a hoax, but more of a compilation of GDR science fiction film music and the like, it would seem.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:42pm davex:

@UM: I mean the one you posted at 9:34.

Hi Simon
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:51pm Gary:

I read somewhere that this girl -- 16 years old when she rapped this -- died soon after. Haven't done more detective work to make sure, or find out what happened ...

Oh what the hell, here's Divided Kingdom Republic

Didn't Dead Prez sample Divided Kingdom?
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:56pm Gary:

I dunno, NGH ... find the song! I'd love to hear it ...
  Wed. 3/19/14 9:56pm Jill B.:

Doug Schi;lomd......yep, that's one of my greatest fears...being snatched in the dead of night for expressing my opinion on line.

Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:58pm Doug Schulkind:

@Jill B
That's right. You just tell the CIA that Doug Schi;lomd sent you. Perfect.
Avatar Wed. 3/19/14 9:58pm northguineahills:

I have a Dead Prez mixtape CD from 2004 that I swear has that sample. I could be wrong.
