Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 8:51am Doug Schulkind:

My high school had a really obnoxious chant at football and basketball games that worked into the words not only pi but also the number of national merit scholarship semi-finalists we had compared to the other school. Insufferable!

Uncle Michael: You're right, I found this: "If you write the date in the month/ date format, today, March 14 or 3/14 is Pi Day for you. If you don’t, well, you will just have to wait a few more months, until Pi Approximation Day on July 22 (22/7)."

Almost made it on time for the first time in quite a time. It's time! Hi Doug!

I'll credit S. Clay Wilson for exposing me to "chode."
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

Chode sounds like some vegan staple. Then again, maybe it... Oh never mind.

Hello bobdc!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:25am Jeff Golick:

I know little about Rollins, but his label has put out some righteous stuff, notably Matt Shipp in a bunch of contexts.

Meanwhile, I could imagine that hanging with Shipp and Rollins for an evening could possibly put one off of people for a while.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:26am glenn:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:34am Matt F:

I always thought it was spelled (spelt?) "choad". Other synonyms include "bonch", "nifkin", "grundle", and perhaps the best-known, "taint".
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:34am Jeff Golick:

@duke. That's a sweet group. Just noticed they have a new rekkid coming out next week! www.relativepitchrecords.com...

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:35am Jeff Golick:

@ausmanx: That looks like an insane story. Thanks for the link.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:37am Jeff Golick:

@Matt F: 'tain't gonna google it, but pretty sure "taint" refers to a proximate but different groinal area/thing.

Also, hi, what's up?
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 9:37am listener james from westwood:

What a voice on Gus!

@ausmax Thanks!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 9:39am Jeff Golick:

...I will stop playlist-bombing shortly. The reason I know anything about this is on account of my co. having recently published the audiobook recording of a mystery regrettably called THE TAINT OF MIDAS. Kids of a certain age will be finding this high-sterical.

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

"Intellectual" is a rough word to hang on a jazz guy. The intellectual crowd won't believe and the jazz crowd will scorn it. Truth is, most of the top improvising artists were deeply intellectual and knowledgable about all kinds of music, including "classical," whatever the fudge that means.
  Fri. 3/14/14 10:16am Cecile:

I am going to read your http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2014/02/uncle-bernie-novelty-mart-and-frank-zappa-in-the-comics.html . I have been listening to '70-'76 Zappa last couple of weeks. Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 10:47am bobdc:

I probably won't be able to listen to your show live two weeks from today because I'll be in... South Africa! Cape Town specifically, and I'm happy to hear any musical tourism recommendations. (My wife is more focused on the nature stuff.)
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 10:50am Andrew Waterloo:

You get some interesting mixes when you listen to WFMU and watch news reports and youtube videos at the same time,
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Send me an email and I will get back to you. I don't know Cape Town well, but I will email my man Chris Albertyn in Durban. He will know the places to go.

@northguineahills
You are just describing yourself, Sir.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

As I am putting the radio show together on the fly, I will group together different tracks into sets and give the sets a name for no good reason. The name of this two-song set is "Experi Mental."

Just learned that all-time great jazz drummer Al Harewood has died. R.I.P. Mr. Harewood.

@Cecile, same here. It takes me 2 weeks to adapt. Maybe spending the next week and change in the Pacific timezone will help.

My head-cocked-like-a-confused-dog musical moment in Cape Town a few years ago: detetrmined to find some good local music, went to a busy downtown scene and into a place (that might've been recommended by native tour guide). Stepped inside and heard a vocalist delivering "Time To Say Goodbye" acapella.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

HOLY WOWZA!
Listener James's mention of 100% sparked a thought that I should check to see if anyone new had pledged to Give the Drummer Some since this past Tuesday's show. When last I looked, the show was sitting at a respectable 84% of a very ambitious goal.

Well...

INDEED MORE HAVE PLEDGED. TWO MORE PLEDGES, ONE FROM SARAH IN BURNABY (CANADA) AND ANOTHER FROM JOE IN BEVERLY HILLS HAVE PUT give the drummer some OVER 100%.

AMAZING! ASTONISHING! EXHILARATING!

I really am at a loss to express my gratitude.

Thank you so so much.

A little part of me wanted to see the station reach 100% just to prove that it was so much more than the Best Show, also that there were a lot of different reasons Tom got such big numbers.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:19am Lewis:

@Andrew Waterloo - well said!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:20am joe:

@Andrew I had that little piece of wanting to being able to prove what I already knew which was that the station was not a one trick pony, and to prove that even more I think this is one of the lower years that JM in the AM had too.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:21am Van in DC:

@joe 11:14 - exactly!! Thank GOD for WFMU and GTDR and my headphones in order to drown out the endless BS sessions in my cubicleland!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:21am joe:

@doug oh my god Doug Fabio/Clay is one of the greatest natural radio things to ever happen. What a story of accidental comic book chemistry.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:22am listener james from westwood:

Van, I understand completely. WFMU has kept me out of jail in that respect.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

Tom and the Best Show's contribution to the universe of WFMU lovers has been magnificent. But you're right. For the station to thrive in the shadow of losing Tom's program is monumental, both symbolically and financially.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:25am joe:

Yeah no disrespect to Tom he is one of the hardest working men I have ever encountered and I say that with not being a fan of his show, but I will never take away what a wonderful person he is and how much he bled and sweat for his show.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

The Fabio/Clay Pigeon pairing is purely the accident of having CP's show follow Fabio's when it first hit the FMU airwaves. It's fun to try to imagine the other possible happy accidents if Clay Pigeon had entered the schedule on a different day/time.

Tom Scharpling earned his popularity one listener at time. He absolutely wrote the book on how to reach through the medium to connect with listeners and invite them to participate in a collaborative experience. He has been an absolute inspiration to me as I try to grow and evolve Give the Drummer Radio. I don't have .05% of the charisma and guts that he has, but even just a little effort in this direction can transform the experience—on both sides of the radio show experience. Tom deserves every ounce of success he's got coming to him.
  Fri. 3/14/14 11:30am Cecile:

Joe, ITA about Fabio and Clay. Natural hilarity ensues.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

Be careful, I may say "experience" three or four more times in the this commenting... experience.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:31am listener james from westwood:

I can't wait for the next album from The Doug Schulkind Experience.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:32am Doug Schulkind:

This band playing now is actually Ornette Coleman's quintet. Must have been for contractual reasons that the LP was issued under Paul Bley's name.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:32am Van in DC:

Was it a big hit when Steinski left? Were there similar misgivings about upcoming marathons? That was all way before my time, so just asking.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:32am listener james from westwood:

And excellent points about Tom's show, all. He was on a bit late for me to catch all 3 hours each week, but those archives are the sort of gold that makes real gold look like lead.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:36am joe:

This is a great set Doug thank you

GIVE THE DRUMMER RADIO PROGRAMMING ALERT...
Stay tuned for Uncle Michael and Hinky DInky Time, up next here on the stream. Playlist page here: wfmu.org...

@Van
Steinski's show never had the following Tom S. has created. It was only on for a year here and there and I'm not sure it was ever on during a marathon until I re-ran the show on the stream last year.
  Fri. 3/14/14 11:37am Cecile:

I think people had a wake up call when Scharpling left and really took it on themselves to really earnestly fundraise on air. I've never heard Bryce speak so much!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

For many years, the Jewish music and information show, JM in the AM, which airs on terrestrial WFMU, 6-9am every weekday, brought in 1/3 of WFMU's overall take during the marathon. But that number his slipped from that lofty mark over the years.
  Fri. 3/14/14 11:38am Cecile:

Of course the first week, I kept writing, "Bryce, talk now" on the board.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:39am Van in DC:

Works calls...gotta run, thanks Doug!
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:39am Carmichael:

Steinski's product was just staggering. The toil and diligence he must have put into each episode probably shocked all the other deejays. Each episode is a friggin' work of art.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:40am Jeff Golick:

Hi again.

Another sad drummer coda to relate, belatedly: I found out this week that the drummer Dick Berk passed away last month. He played on Ted Curson's Tears for Dolphy.
  Fri. 3/14/14 11:41am Cecile:

Has the listenership declined for JM, Doug?
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:42am listener james from westwood:

I hadn't realized that there's a whole program week on a dedicated JM stream now, too. Good to see Nachum and associates have found some room in the infinite space of the stream to grow, as GTDR has.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:43am Santos L Halper:

Congrats on your goal Doug and thanks for a great show! Also appreciated was your info on the archival marathon footage; you should record a commentary track or some subtitles for that!
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:43am listener james from westwood:

@Carmichael: True that. All that was manually compiled and edited. Doug, did you once cite a 20-hour prep figure for a single-hour Steinski show, or am I dreaming?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Cecile
I don't think the JM in the AM listenership has declined, but it has gotten older and has not expanded with the Internet the way the freeform side of WFMU has.

@Santos L. Halper
It was great fun watching those old WFMU marathon videos. I'd never seen them before. I watched the with my 13-year-old daughter whose jaw was on the floor the whole time. She recognized me before I did. THAT'S YOU WITH THE MARACAS, she screamed!

Yes, Steinski spent at least 20 hours producing each 1-hour show. I heard Clay Pigeon say the same thing about his program during the marathon! The shows with man-on-the-street interview segments take a huge amount of production work. Totally awesome.

Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:48am Uncle Michael:

I yelled the same thing when I saw the maracas.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Heh heh! I finally beat you to it Uncle Michael!
  Fri. 3/14/14 11:49am Cecile:

That kind of work to product ratio is why I never went into music production as a field.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:49am Doug Schulkind:

I think most people have that kind of reaction to maracas, frankly.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:49am Andrew Waterloo:

The fun thing about Clay was that he described producing his show by basically sitting on his living room floor in front of double tape deck.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:49am Uncle Michael:

I know...but I didn't want to get out of the habit.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:51am ndbob:

excellent show Doug! - and an excellent chat as well
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:51am Lewis:

Clay's on the street stuff is *really good* and as I learn to to a bit of *digital* editing and learned he does it with tape, my jaw drops closer and closer to the floor. To say nothing of his ability to get people to talk (slight return to the transition with fabio).
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:51am Uncle Michael:

Just because the next show will suck...it doesn't mean the chat has to!
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:53am Ike:

Only catching the last few min., but looks like v. interesting comments here & cool sounds. And Doug, you are very charismatic IMHO.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:53am listener james from westwood:

Oh, pshaw on the suckage. Even those speakers are shaking in anticipation over there.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:53am Lewis:

@not to worry @UM - I will follow you to Topeka with only a slight interruption as I start and stop the stream to fix the stuttering that seems to ensue when we move from Pittsburgh to Kansas (aint technology grand!)
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:54am Uncle Michael:

so grand!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

I spent about 30 hours editing out the clicks and pops on the tracks on my marathon premium. When I listened back to the masters, it sounded like I'd never touched them. Sigh. In my mind's ear, I know they sound better.

Hi Ike! Asthmatic, maybe...
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:55am duke:

Groovy wibble warble on this one.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:56am Doug Schulkind:

I used to do radio production back in the pre-digital days. Tape Splicer was pretty much my job title.

I did a lot of tape splicing back in the day. Crazy.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 11:57am Doug Schulkind:

Great show today, Doug.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:59am Ike:

If JM was a little low this yr., it was prob. because Limbaugh did not pledge this year.
Avatar    Fri. 3/14/14 11:59am Carmichael:

And sticky tape!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:01pm Artie:

Razor blades and that little divoted fine metal cutting block. Straight or angled? I was angled.
