Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:14pm pacific standard simon:

That's an interesting early JJ Cale obscurity.

Goin' up! And takin' me back
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:22pm efd:

Have I played this?! I prefer The Mighty Pope version actually. Plus that one's on Private Stock.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

Will always associate Nicholas w/ Cousin Kevin in the bizarre phenomenon that was Ken Russell's "Tommy."
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:23pm efd:

I was mostly surprised at myself for recognizing it right away.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:24pm efd:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:27pm Doug Schulkind:

No monument to Mad Mike, but maybe there's a Primanti's sandwich named after him.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:28pm Droll:

I was lurking as best I could, how did you know I wanted to hear Red Rider?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:29pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:30pm listener james from westwood:

@ljfw; you win this round, for sure.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:32pm listener james from westwood:

What a follow-up track!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:33pm Jeff Golick:

WOW. One of those songs I didn't know I knew all the words to.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:33pm efd:

I worked out the BEST dance moves to this song when I was 15.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

That's so cool, Jeff. maybe the next one too!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:34pm listener james from westwood:

Jeff, I was that way on Monday w. "Bring the Noise."
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:34pm efd:

ah! I was wondering which track you were referencing last week.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:35pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:35pm Jeff Golick:

In that gif, UM, are those two different speakers? Or a mirror image? I thought it was a mirror, but the grains don't seem to line up...?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:36pm Uncle Michael:

You decide, Jeff. You're the Decider today.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:36pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: Sweet.

@UM: nope. You've gone too deep (for me).
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:36pm Parq:

Uncle Michael! OMG, it's FINALLY Friday afternoon!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:40pm Uncle Michael:

You made it, Parq. Congrats.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:41pm efd:

Not a lot of radio airplay for Millie Jackson.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:41pm Uncle Michael:

I'll "Erica" your ass, all right.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:42pm listener james from westwood:

OMFG on this Millie cut. :)
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:42pm joe:

Emmmmm' Hmmmmmmm'
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:43pm Jeff Golick:

WELL. WELL. Note to self: do not cross Millie Jackson.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

Was it Millie Jackson who Joe McGasko played when he subbed that one time on the stream? IIRC he played a female artist who was delightfully bluer than blue.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:43pm listener james from westwood:

(Or did he sub on the 6-9 am shift? My mind is going.)
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:44pm Uncle Michael:

Joe has played this, I believe.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:44pm pacific standard simon:

Might've been Betty Davis.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:45pm listener james from westwood:

Betty Davis' sighs?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:48pm pacific standard simon:

Solo fun is nothing to be ashamed of.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:50pm Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: You're on fire today, listener james.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:52pm Mike East:

there's a fine line between fun and stupid
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:52pm Mike East:

gets blurry sometimes
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:52pm ndbob:

The strangest concert I ever saw was a Kinks concert at Painter's Mill Music Hall near Baltimore - the theater was evacuated early on due to a bomb threat - when everyone came back the Kinks were throwing beer around - ray Davies slipped, hit his head, and couldn't continue.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:52pm Santos L Halper:

Hopefully it'll be stupid AND fun
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:52pm efd:

dammit UM, you're pulling out ALL the efd bait today.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:54pm Uncle Michael:

I'm sorry?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:55pm efd:

it's just that I'm trying to get some work done and the music you're playing is too good.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:56pm listener james from westwood:

Santos: I'm going to header my OKCupid profile with that.
EFD: That is always an occupational hazard w/ FMU.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

You pays yer money and ya takes yer chances.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:57pm northguineahills:

Had the stream playing while napping, and the Hinky Dinky Time theme was supposed to wake me up. I remember it in my dream, but didn't quite get myself vertical.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 12:59pm Lewis:

@ngh - sounds like a nice snooze!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:01pm listener james from westwood:

Johnny Reggae might be a good pair for Millie, sounds like!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:05pm northguineahills:

T'was it was!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:05pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:06pm Uncle Michael:

Frank's recording of this doesn't come close.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:09pm Uncle Michael:

Fixing to go long-form in the next set. But you won't want to get too far from your speakers to hear.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:11pm Doug Schulkind:

Lay it on thick, Uncle Michael.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:16pm Gary:

Am I in time for Sun Ra?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:17pm Santos L Halper:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:19pm Jeff Golick:

This here's a new one on me! UM, going SUB-underground!

From the looks of this page, this cut's from 67/68? www.discogs.com...
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:21pm Gary:

Pretty monster great
  Fri. 3/14/14 1:22pm Dean:

Love the venue: Temple Univers[e]
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah, I think the first time the suite it was released was '74, perhaps.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:25pm Lewis:

isn't discogs cool...
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:25pm Uncle Michael:

discogs and 45cat.com are essential to me
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:27pm Jeff Golick:

Discogs is like my google. Thankfully, I haven't turned to it for shopping purposes, only research.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:28pm Lewis:

the shopping part is cool too, but yeah it can require great self-control!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

I also rely a lot on the OCD people that catalog every release # for various 78rpm labels from the mists of time.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:30pm Uncle Michael:

I always start at discogs but I'd say it comes up short for me about 30% of the time.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:35pm ndbob:

@UM those 78 label catalogs are great
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:36pm Lewis:

To be honest, I am usually jamming my searches in between the work I am supposed to be doing, so dead ends are often the end of the line (and by the time I actually have time to poke around, my little ADD brain has moved on to something else)
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:37pm Doug Schulkind:

I rely on Discogs all the time, even though I'm sure it's rife with errors. Whadayagonnado?!

I also use this site a ton for older tunes: www.wirz.de...

And this site for 45s: www.45cat.com
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:37pm Lewis:

nice seg gooey…
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:39pm Lewis:

exactly - very much an "ok what do I do now? position and you eased us out of the trance smoothly and with out shock...
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Here's one for ya Doug.

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:42pm still b/p:

Just back from hearing a political candidate speak. Need to be Hinkied good and Dinkied good wicked bad, man.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:44pm Uncle Michael:

You've come to the right place still b/p!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:45pm Jeff Golick:

If you're willing to scroll way down, the Destination-out.com blogroll (remember those) has some fine fine discographies, that represent a ridic amount of work on the part of music lovers/saints. They are the monks of our time, no doubt.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:46pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Good afternoon HDers, Show was a great running soundtrack ( via Android app) as I tackled some nasty Satan Island hills! And then, finished while Sun Ra was on....YeSSSS!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:46pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Jeff...will check 'em out.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:46pm Lewis:

@Jeff G - I like the monk analogy...
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

Alright, Kevin!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:48pm Jeff Golick:

@Lewis; pledges of chastity probably optional but involuntarily invoked in some cases.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Graham fucking Maby!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:49pm Lewis:

the speakers are just about in time with cut...
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:50pm Uncle Michael:

I hope you were ready to rock....Cleveland.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:51pm Lewis:

@JG ;-))
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:51pm KevinfromBayRidge:

@Jeff, guess we're talkin' musical Trekkies
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Where the hell is efd?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:53pm northguineahills:

My neck won't let me bang my head like it used to.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:54pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 1:59pm northguineahills:

I think about four years ago, I was at a show w/ a bunch of Load Recs bands, and the next week, I couldn't move my neck. Hence, I stopped head banging.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:04pm SeanG:

this is awesome
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:06pm Uncle Michael:

Isn't it?!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:07pm Uncle Michael:

Yes, that David Hemmings.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:08pm ndbob:

The Byrds back him on this LP
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:09pm Uncle Michael:

Whoa. They sound like the Magic Band.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:13pm still b/p:

"Early in his career, Hemmings was a boy soprano appearing in operatic roles. "
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:14pm Uncle Michael:

Anyone seen "Last Orders?"
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:15pm Uncle Michael:

This might be Rev. Al's funkiest shit.
  Fri. 3/14/14 2:19pm Ralphine:

If you're ever in the Memphis area on a day when Reverend Green is preaching, I recommend that you go.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:19pm Uncle Michael:

The one time I was there, he wasn't. I'd love to.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:25pm listener james from westwood:

I think it's easier to have cocktail parties in cities with lots of cabs/good transit systems in this era. Suburbs and the drive home through them are incompatible with knocking down martinis.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:26pm listener james from westwood:

Also, here's a new plate of chicken satay skewers, if you want.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:27pm ndbob:

The same year that "Camelot" was released (1967), he put out a pop single ("Back Street Mirror") and an album, "David Hemmings Happens", recorded in Los Angeles. His album was produced by Jim Dickinson, the early producer of The Byrds, and featured instrumental backing by several members of group. It was re-released on CD in 2005

Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:28pm listener james from westwood:

For one wedding where I was an usher, I had to ensure the father of the groom and his mistress (yes, mistress—speaking of "Mad Men"—they knew she was coming) were seated very far from the groom's mother. Awkward!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:29pm ndbob:

tho it's actually Jim Dickson not Dickinson
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:30pm listener james from westwood:

Said mother of the groom retaliated by throwing away a shipment of her ex-husband's hair plugs when they arrived at the house.

I'm not friends with any of these people anymore. Much simpler this way.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:30pm Lewis:

my goodness but I do love humans playing records for humans at a distance (or something like that)...
  Fri. 3/14/14 2:32pm Ralphine:

That Albert Collins track is interesting. His guitar tone isn't as "icy" as it would later become, song title notwithstanding.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

people install their own hair plugs?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:34pm listener james from westwood:

UM, I wondered the same thing, but the story horrified me on so many levels I just backed away and let the details repose beneath the waves.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:35pm Uncle Michael:

I understand.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:36pm still b/p:

Yeah, with a small chisel and hammer...like putting material between boat hull planks or cabin logs.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

I'm not really sure what's happening.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

I so want you to be lying, still b/p.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:46pm Santos L Halper:

Utterly joyous show today UM! i missed if you said which was the wheel selection?
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:47pm ndbob:

excellent show UM!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:53pm Mike East:

Enjoyed what I've heard today. It'd be nice if my computer didn't crash every half hour, though.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:53pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks all. I appreciate the company and the ears...and the illustrative commentary!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:54pm Brian in UK:

YING TONG. Peerless Uncle Michael. Probably produced by George Martin.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Go jump in a lake, Brian in UK!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

Yes,very likely! Thanks, Brian.

He's fallen in the water.

Almost getting cloae to the Airplane here.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:56pm listener james from westwood:

Glorious show, UM! That Sun Ra cut was a great pick, and I sure won't complain about repeat doses of H. P. Lovecraft. Or about mega-long tracks, Sun Ra or not.
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:57pm Uncle Michael:

I appreciate the votes of confidence!
Avatar Fri. 3/14/14 2:57pm Lewis:

@brian in UK - was thinking the same thing...
