A reflexive, traveling radio production. Each show is spontaneous as a backroom deal, a different guest a different location every week. Two hours of trading records with friends, programming without a prepared playlist. Actually, it goes like this: Jesse Kaminsky travels around Providence and the world with a portable radio show, visits a different person every week and makes spontaneous musical exchanges. We agree to call it radio.

Tuesdays 7 - 10pm (EDT) (Web-only) | On WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio

Speaking of Burma, Gary...Top Gear is halfway through their two=part Burma special and it's amazing....and fixing to get moreso.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:03pm listener james from westwood:

@Doug: It's the mood lighting.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:04pm Doug Schulkind:

Did you say moonlighting? Why yes, yes I am, Listener James!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:04pm Gary:

Top Gear? Forgive my ignorance, but what is that? Clearly I need it, whatever it is ...
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:05pm Nfrae from Oregon:

Hey, people!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:07pm Doug Schulkind:

Wecome aboard, Nfrae from Oregon!

Much easier than welcome a board. That would just be silly.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:07pm still b/p:

Didn't the Top Gear guys get in trouble for some boorish remarks or behavior?
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:08pm still b/p:

Planks for being here!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:09pm Doug Schulkind:

Wooden you know it, still b/p!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:10pm Uncle Michael:

Top Gear is the most popular tv show in the UK and the best and most popular car show ever.

Yes, they get into trouble from time to time. Richard Hammond said something bad about Mexican food...which I guess in the UK, looks like "fried sick."

They're diving three beat up old lorries across Burma to build a bridge...over the River Kwai. What happens is amazing...as usual.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:11pm Holly in NC:

@Doug - How are Luna's paws? And did you see the article about UK family who had house fumigated due to burst spider bags from - you guessed it - a bunch of bananas? Reason 9999,0000 to dislike bananas.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:12pm northguineahills:

When does Jeremy Clarkson not say something boorish?

That said, their ridiculous challenges are entertaining, but I sometimes get bogged down in the more gear-headed-ness (especially 10 years ago).
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:12pm glenn:

you can come up with ten billion reasons top dislike bananas, and they'll all be wrong.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly
I did not see that article. Now how do I unread your comment! Luna is getting epsom salts baths and is wearing a new cone of shame. (She obliterated the first one. I was kinda of proud of her.) Also some pain meds and antibiotics.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:13pm still b/p:

Burst Spider Bags ---gooooooood band name!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:13pm glenn:

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:16pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:16pm Gary:

BRING US SOME, U.M.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:18pm Gary:

I just read about the Los Exitos de Sex Pistols album. I am speechless.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:18pm Doug Schulkind:

The problem with doing someone else's playlist is you can never go run and have a pee because you don't know how long the songs are. #firstworldproblem
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:20pm Holly in NC:

@glenn - Unless they're frozen & covered in dark chocolate, I REALLY dislike bananas. Taste, texture, and spider receptacle properties - ugh.

@still b/p - A quite good band named Spider Bags already exists - not burst though!

@Doug - oh, Luna. Epsom salts are good for a multitude of things, hope they work. Sounds like you haven't had a chance to try musher salve yet?

BTW, today is only 2nd warm day in Durham and already spiders are emerging all over my house. Including one IN my WFMU messenger bag. DAMN IT.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:20pm still b/p:

Speakers in the bathroom, rah rah rah!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:21pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - Los Exitos de Sex Pistols is great. If you can't find a copy, give me a holler :-)
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:22pm Doug Schulkind:

@Holly
I have some Musher's Secret, but I don't want to start using it until her open wounds have healed more. (Sorry about the details everyone. Don't worry. Nothing is oozing.)
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:22pm still b/p:

Burst Spider Bags would be the Spider Bags tribute band, then.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:23pm Doug Schulkind:

PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT...PLEDGE ALERT!
Thanks for Listener Claudio in Quebec City, Quebec, for pledging! His pledge came in after Jesse's last show ended. w00t! Claudio!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:24pm Santos L Halper:

That's quite the song title on that Parni Valjak. Dunno what it means but sounds good!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:25pm Doug Schulkind:

@Santos L Halper
Google translates it as: "That sale Who Do not Watch when he stepped Rolling Stones"
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:25pm Gary:

Someone plays Gary's favorite song now?
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:26pm Jesse K:

hey guys, I got a break for a minute from school stuff to say hi!!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:26pm listener james from westwood:

Agreed, Santos. That was a firecracker!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:26pm Santos L Halper:

I'm sure that is 100% accurate :)
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:26pm Gary:

HOLLY ... I will take you up on your offer -- I'm not able to locate it elsewhere ... HI JESSE
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:28pm Gary:

OH, WAIT --- maybe I found a copy, Holly
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:29pm northguineahills:

The common Cavendish (and dwarf Cavendish clones) bananas that are common today, have a meh flavor. The Gros Michel, which was slowly wiped out in the Western Hemisphere, tastes much better. You could find the Gros Michel in supermarkets in some places until the early 80s, but I only really remember them in Japan (They survived well in SE Asia).
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:30pm Doug Schulkind:

I'm peddling as fast as I can, Jesse!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:31pm Gary:

Another fave!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:31pm Holly in NC:

2nd time I've linked to this fab Morena y Clara video:

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I love that sample of young Burundi girls at the beginning of this track. I have the original LP it's from.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:38pm Gary:

I remember that video, Holly! Maybe you linked to it the first time I heard the song, which was I think on Doug's tribute to Holy Warbles show
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:40pm Doug Schulkind:

I first saw that MyC video posted at HW.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:41pm Holly in NC:

@Gary - I've linked more recently, but yes, owl was a fan also.

I'm sending Los Punk Rockers right now via Hightail (aka yousendit) :-)

@Gary -
My end estimates 24 minute transfer, so good chance your dl will arrive first. But always good to have options!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:45pm Gary:

My DL now says 27 mins, so yours will probably come first. Also, some DLs have passwords :(

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:52pm Doug Schulkind:

No fair, glenn, he's actually singing.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:53pm glenn:

i'm not kidding, it's really good.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:55pm Doug Schulkind:

Sure, he's actually singing the song. Lorde just kind of...says...it. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:56pm Holly in NC:

Just recently got into Suzanne Ciani. I was so absolutely vehemently anti-synth in my youth (except, for some reason, select Yes, Rush & Devo) that I now have more than a lifetime of good music to explore!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:57pm glenn:

on the other hand, lorde now has a cosmetics line, and he's a clown.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:57pm Doug Schulkind:

My first ever shift on WFMU was on early Monday morning, 3-6:30am. The show on before the show on before mine was this synth-heavy show called "Synthetic Pleasure" hosted by a guy named Richard Ginsburg. The night I came down to do one of my earliest shows, I got to the station extra early and Richard was still on the air. (He went off at midnight.) His guest that night was Suzanne Ciani.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:58pm Doug Schulkind:

That was back in February 1988.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:59pm northguineahills:

Suzanne Ciani is the best Terry Rileyesque sound I've heard since Shogun Kunitoki (Finish group on Fonal Recs)
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 7:59pm steve:

hey all. Holly have you seen the video of Suzanne explaining how she made the sounds for the Xenon pinball game? its worth watching some time...
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:00pm Doug Schulkind:

Evening Steve!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:02pm steve:

hey there Doug! disco acapellas and 80s synth hardware have drawn me in...

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:05pm Holly in NC:

@Doug -that's amazing!

Also amazing - temp here hit 79F today, and it's currently still 67F. BUT tomorrow going from 76F during the day to *29F * tomorrow night (and Thursday w/b 43/25). That should kill the spiders who dared to make an appearance, muaa ha ha!
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:06pm LovecraftDude888:

eww bananas as spider receptacles...reminds me of the infamous Bubble Yum urb. legend.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:06pm Holly in NC:

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:09pm Doug Schulkind:

This is really Jesse Kaminsky's show, but he's still stuck in one of those bathrooms in Sochi, so I told him I would run his playlist page.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:09pm Uncle Michael:

Poor Jesse...half a toilet.
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:10pm LovecraftDude888:

thanks Doug. I'm gonna be mainly zen but Reed's show was so great earlier, too....now reading of Bklyn Zine Fest coming up in late April...gonna really try to attend that
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:10pm Holly in NC:

@lovecraftdude - that was one of the best urban legends. Didn't stop me from chewing grape bubble yum, mainly to goof on my greatly beloved Gram, who a) did not care at all for the scent of artifical grapes, and b) bequeathed me her irrational fear of spiders and a superb sense of humor.
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:10pm northguineahills:

It was 65F/18C today in Brooklyn, the first day in a tee shirt all winter. Still have the windows open, and I got to put the plants outside.

Of course it's supposed to rain tonight through Wednesday, and by Thursday it's supposed to snow and get down to 18F/-8C.

  Tue. 3/11/14 8:15pm LovecraftDude888:

ha. didn't that legend kick in the same month or so that Bubble Yum debuted? if I recall correctly? and I might not.--i gotta be quiet now to appease our Station Manager.....I promised him

Poor Mikey, between the gum & the pop rocks he didn't stand a chance.
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:17pm LovecraftDude888:

i was forbidden Pop Rocks, mom wouldn't buy 'em for me
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:19pm tom:

i think freshen up, the squirting gum laid the ground for the urban legend of spider eggs in gum, but thats only speculation on my part.
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:21pm LovecraftDude888:

i recall it as Bubble Yum in my neck of LI NY woods at the time....could have been Freshen Up as well. that Gator Aid Gum was truly putrid! and now I'm off to listen and chill....trying to be zen baby
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:22pm LovecraftDude888:

Ade, sorry
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:23pm Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of Pop Rocks, remember that short-lived TV show Cop Rock? It was sort of a Hill Street Blues, but the characters would occasionally break out into song. Well one of the stars of the ensemble cast had previously been an out of work actor who made money by riding a bicycle fitted with ice chests filled with beer around to all the ball fields in Central Park. He would sell beers to the softball teams. I played for years on a team in the publishers league, and this guy (David Gianopoulos), sort of became our team's personal beer man. Ah, good times!
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:24pm Holly in NC:

@tom & lovecraftdude -
Definitely Bubble Yum in southwest Connecticut, But I LOVED Freshen Up and especially Gator gum. Haven't chewed gum (or cared to) for years, but Gator gum would temp me. Got me through a lot of track meets.

Hi Jesse!
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:25pm LovecraftDude888:

yep Cop Rock..bombed like the hydrogen. worse than Hello, Larry
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:25pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:28pm Gary:

Got the email & just DLed los punk rockers ... grazie, Holly!
  Tue. 3/11/14 8:28pm tom:

was really just joking about that, but the thought was that the experience of having gum explode goo in your mouth sort of set the table for the spider egg urban legend
Avatar Tue. 3/11/14 8:29pm listener james from westwood:

My parents may have been the only 2 Cop Rock fans in northern NJ.

Well in honor of Jesse's last choices and Rob W's amazing marathon performance, maybe some Asha?

This Charanjit Singh album is so fucking great.
