Irwin - I pledged earlier today and while I live in Massachusetts now I grew up in Middletown in NJ so could I hear Matt Farley's Middletown song? Pretty please? And why doesn't Matt have any Massachusetts songs - he lives here!

I think Clay and Irwin should be a permanent duo from now on. Look out Frangry and Michelle.
Side note - I am curious about Matt Farley's song for San Jose as I am from there, even though Dionne Warwick does as righteous tribute to that city.

Hah! I might add about Huddersfield:
-birthplace of James Mason (Patrick Stewart was born down the road in Kirklees)
-the site of The Sex Pistols' best gig
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 3:31pm mariano:

Caryn: that's cool about James Mason, he's always been a fave. What happened at the Pistols gig?
  Wed. 3/5/14 3:32pm P-90:

The Pistols didn't get into a shouting match with James Mason from the stage?
  Wed. 3/5/14 3:33pm Ralphine:

Probably my all-time favorite James Mason movie line: "Nurse the tooth."
  Wed. 3/5/14 3:34pm josephebacon:

I always thought James Mason was Bigger Than Life!
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 3:34pm Caryn:

@mariano: well, it was a gig for miners and their families (I think near X-mas, but I could be recalling this wrong). The Pistols have always spoken fondly of the gig, and talked about it as their best. As far as I know, nothing hugely unusual happened. There's plenty of footage of it in one of the Julian Temple docs about them.

When in Huddersfield, I lived about a block away from James Mason Close, named such because that's where he was born. Nice Victorian houses.
  Wed. 3/5/14 3:34pm P-90:

Which James Mason movie was it where he played the guy going bonkers from Cortisone shots?

Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 3:39pm mariano:

Thanks for the info Caryn! James Mason's also great in Lolita. And even as the ship's captain in Yellowbeard, with his immortal line "And this is Mr Prostitute, in charge of discipline."
Avatar    Wed. 3/5/14 3:40pm Alison Porchnik:

James Mason in The Servant rivals James Mason in Bigger That Life.
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 3:42pm Caryn:

@mariano: My fave bit from Yellowbeard is the discussion between John Cleese and Eric Idle:
Cleese: -I have acute hearing.
Idle: -I'm not interested in your jewellery, cloth-eyes.
Avatar    Wed. 3/5/14 3:42pm Kurt Gottschalk:

  Wed. 3/5/14 3:42pm josephebacon:

James Mason was great as Captain Nemo, too!
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 3:43pm Caryn:

Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 3:57pm WaveyDavey:

Buh, Buh, Buh, Buh, Buh Berkeley California. Mr. Farley didn't mention that Berkeley does not recognize "Columbus Day" but instead celebrates "Indigenous People's Day"

I just hope that Matt writes some songs where the town sucks. The "____ is a very good town" gets pretty boring.
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 4:09pm WaveyDavey:

FYI the Reverend Solomon Hicks is played by David Cross.
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 4:10pm Caryn:

@Skirkie: maybe he's lulling everyone into a false sense of security. Years of "good town" songs and then suddenly he'll come out with a bunch of songs that are just torrents of abuse directed at various towns.

@WaveyDavey: wow, he can certainly alter his voice!
Avatar    Wed. 3/5/14 4:19pm rrg:

Skirkie, Matt Farley's song about Camden NJ is titled "Camden Isn't So Bad! It's Getting Better."

He's not going to insult towns outright because he wants to sell the songs to residents.
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 4:20pm Skirkie:

But it's just so much more entertaining. What would happen if he wrote a sone for Oldcastle in Cheshire after saying he doesn't WANT and old castle? Can't have it both ways, buddy.
Avatar    Wed. 3/5/14 4:20pm rrg:

There are those who call it spam. They might be right.
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 4:21pm mariano:

@WaveyDavey: while we're at it, would you (or anyone) happen to know who does the telephone preacher on Joe Frank, the one who calls people up and gets them to join in ridiculous prayers? Been looking for that info for a while.

A true Castle is the White Castle
Avatar Wed. 3/5/14 4:23pm Droll:

rrg, That's a terrible business model, there are far more people outside this towns than in them. Skirkie should record and sell songs bashing those cities. Selling songs is very, very lucrative these days.
